Roon remote connection fail

I installed Roon on Windows desktop with no issues. I have tried to connect Microsoft Surface Go, an Android tablet and an Android phone. With all three my desktop is found on the network but the connection failed. Also, I tried using the Surface Go as a Core, Roon downloads and installed but when I then try to login with my email the keyboard appears and then quickly disappears and if I try to enter my password the keyboard doesn’t appear at all. Can someone @support help with these issues? Thank you!

Hi @Frank_Gattuso,

Connection Issue

So we can better assist you, please provide a brief description of your current setup using this link as a guide.

Make sure to describe your network configuration/topology, including any networking hardware currently in use, so we can have a clear understanding of how your devices are communicating.

Keyboard on Surface Go

Please see the following:

Click on the Start menu and select Settings or do a search for it and open it from there. Then head over to Devices and select Typing from the left side menu.

In the resulting window make sure that Automatically show the touch keyboard when not in tablet mode when there’s no keyboard attached to your device is Enabled.

Can you confirm whether or not this setting is enabled? If not is there any change after enabling?

Hi Dylan,

I have a new HP desktop, if you need more info on this let me know. I am streaming Tidal with a Lumin D2. The Lumin app installed on the tablet and phone without a problem. I have internet with Spectrum, using an Arris router, not a Spectrum router. The internet has supported many devices simultaneously in this house without a problem. I don’t have an ethernet connection to the Lumin, I had to buy a Netgear Powerline 1200 with one unit plugged into the router and the other one into the Lumin D2 about 30 feet away.

Here is a copy of my network info:

Does this help?

I wil try your suggestion on the Surface Go.

Thanks,
Frank

  • Turn off Firewall on all your Windows computers.
  • In the router, see if there is any “Isolate” function, e.g. AP Isolate and/or Client Isolate - it/they must be disabled.
  • In the router, see if there is a setting for Multicast - it must be enabled.
  • In the router, see if there is any IGMP setting - toggle them and see which works for you.
  • After any router setting change, restart your Roon Core and Roon Remote.

Hi Peter,

I found where to turn off my firewall, but below that is an option to let an app through my firewall, should I try that for the Roon app? If the firewall has to be turned off, is this just until I get the Roon remotes connected or will the Firewall have to stay off? For the router, I’ve never done anything with a router, can these changes be made from my desktop? Is that a way into the router settings?

For simplicity turn off the firewall until you’ve solved this issue. Once you’ve identified the exact cause of failures, then you can proceed to enable the firewall but add exceptions to Roon processes.

To change Arris router settings:

Open up a web browser from desktop, and enter the IP address http://192.168.0.1 in your browser’s address bar and press Enter.

The Login window will prompt for the router configuration username and password.
The default username is "admin"
The default password is "password"

(You may have a different password if someone else set it up for you in the past.)

Thanks all, I think I got it. I couldn’t get the remotes to connect with the advice, but I was able to get the Surface Go keyboard to work and switched my Core from my desktop to my Surface Go. This will work until I load my desktop with music I can’t get through Tidal, and even then I can use the USB on the Lumin and the Lumin app if necessary. Thanks again!

Does Roon Remote app on Android connect to your Roon Core on Surface Go successfully?

Is the Lumin D2 seen as a Roon Ready device with the Roon Core on Surface Go?

Yes to the second question. The Surface Go connected to the Lumin D2 after I selected it, at first Tidal was playing only on the Surface Go.

I will try the Roon Remote app on my Android devices later today and let you know.
