Roon seems to require a lot of work

Some roon chap on YouTube told me how to set it up.
I just plugged my hdd into the pc and set up roon with my network bridge and in less than a minute everything was running.
I’ve no idea about scanning or whatever. I just plug and play.
People on here are on about NUCs and other things and I haven’t a clue what they are talking about.
I just keep it simple. I ramp up to dsd256 and play it all from hdd.
My pc is powerful so everything runs fine. All my toys are hard wired.
Roon is a pain with tags. But you get used to fixing things.
Golden rule.
Keep everything simple.
I have no idea about back ups on roon or even what that is.
I don’t need to do anything than plug and play.
Don’t over think roon as it serves no purpose.
I’ve been with roon since October and love it.
Accept it’s peculiarities as challenging them serves no purpose whatsoever.
Work with them and you’ll be fine.
Happy rooning.
Simplicity is best

Maybe that’s the one thing you might want to consider changing?

I’ve had very good success ripping a hundreds of CDs using EAC, generally few problems with tags. I am using V1.6 which uses the gnudb database, successor to freedb.

Seems that V1.6 was the last version of EAC released and way back in 2020, despite this works fine with W11.

(I edited to correct some errors)

Great idea , coudn’t agree more.

BUT learn about backups , HDD and even SSDs fail and all your precious audio files go missing , keep at least on copy external to your PC.

My practice is OTT ,I have a HDD in my PC , I sync that with an SSD in my Roon server , then for every HDD in my PC I have 2 external USB drive copies of the whole lot . If you want to be really paranoid, keep one of those copies in a Safe Deposit box out of the house

You should also backup Roon , although its not as critical as source as you can if needs be rebuild it , but why risk it for a couple of USB HDD

Why?
Everything is on hdd. I just plug and play.
Everything is also backed up elsewhere. That’s common sense. But that’s not backing up roon. It’s backing up an hdd. Roon is just the software.
I didn’t even know roon created a backup. I actually don’t know what it creates a back up of. I don’t need to know.
When I first installed roon it was up and running in less than a minute.
So many on here seem to complicate something so simple.
Maybe that’s why they have so many issues.
I’ve had none.
Maybe because I keep things so simple is because it works so well for me
I don’t even know what rebuilding roon means. I don’t need to know.
We live in a world where so many people complicate their lives without any reason other than creating things to do.
So many worry about things where there’s nothing to worry about. Almost as if they are afraid of things going smoothly.
We live in strange times.=

I agree about aiming for just the right level of simplicity. I suspect most of us here would as well.

But – at the risk of repeating myself – backing up your Roon database using the Roon app is absolutely essential. If you don’t do it, you may never be able to re-create your Roon environment again should something happen.

Strongly suggest reading up on the specific Roon backup routines. Good luck.

Thanks.
I’ll stick to my plug and play approach. If it worked the first time I started it will work again.
It was roon themselves that showed me how to set up roon and their instructions were perfect.
I’ve backed those up.

Hi, some people edit their libraries extensively and in those cases it’s important to back up, if you are like I was and just let the music import then queued up albums and pressed play, you have nothing to back up, just reimport everything should you need to do so.

I think that the point of backing up the Roon database is that it changes - so after a while it is no longer as it was when you installed it. All the adjustments and corrections you made to your music collection, and all your playlists, queues, statistics, etc., are of course also updated.

All of that will be lost if the database is lost. A backup takes a few seconds or perhaps a few minutes and can be made fully automatically, or you can manually make one from time to time. Both approaches are supported by the Roon software itself, so it couldn’t be easier to arrange.

I will try it out. I have a long time tagging as roon cant do it properly. And it does ignore covers too and enforces its own
I dont really do playlists or queues. Stats dont bother me.
But tags do. As do covers.
If roon respected tags and covers then this wouldn’t be needed.
Ill do when I am not playing music.

Roon does support tags if you tell it to in settings. Choose Roon or choose the file metadata

I have to manually tag.
So if i copy over a first pressing vinyl rip i have to manually tag.
I like all the vinyl information in the tag.
It also ignores my covers and imposes its own.
I expect the cover to match the tag and even when they in the folder, roon usually ignores them and imposes ones that dont match
IE. A stereo cover for a mono recording.

That’s the spirit!

And backup needs in any case to be done while not playing music. Often it makes sense to just plug in a USB-drive and schedule a backup each night, then it will work completely automatically (and simply skip the backup on nights where you do hear music at the scheduled time).

Have you read the Help Centre article at:

I have already covered(oops) this.
Roon ignores covers and i have to manually change them.

I cant be doing that every night.
Too much and too ritualistic.
I will do every now and then.
As i said. I keep things simple.

No problem - we all find our own rhythm.

@MortimerBrewster62 - You need to change your import settings and then rescan your library.

I have done what I can. Roon does what it wants no matter what with certain things. It certainly ignores the settings.
I just manually change it now.
Thanks anyway

I’ve never known anyone who hasn’t found this to work.

In Settings > Library > Import Settings (https://help.roonlabs.com/portal/en/kb/articles/import-settings#Locating_Import_Settings) you tell Roon to prefer your local album artwork.

Then you MUST force rescan your library, under Settings > Storage (Force Rescan on Few Folders).

It will take some time to update everything after the force rescan.

If, after that, you are seeing Roon’s album artwork, then something is very wrong with your setup and you need to put in a Support ticket.
