Roon Server Not Connecting After Downgrade to macOS Catalina (ref#KNU22D)

What’s happening?

· I'm having trouble connecting to Roon

What type of connection issue?

Describe the issue

I recently updated my Roon server (MacMini, Intel 2019, headless) to Mac OS Sequoia and since then nothing is working!
Now I have downgraded the Mac to the originally installed system os 10.15 Catalina and clicked „restore from backup“.
The backup runs successfully, the percentages of the restore run up to 100%.
but after that I can't go any further.
My Mac Mini appears and seems to be available as "ready": Mac OS 10.15.7 / 127.0.0.1, version 2.0 (Build 1470).
But when I click "connect", it does NOT connect and I have only the same choices as before „log in“ or "restore backup".

What’s the problem and what can I do to get Roon running again with my whole music library?

Can you please describe the solution exactly step by step?

Hi @Urs_Klauser,
Thanks for reaching out to us to ask about this issue. It sounds like you’ve encountered a login loop. Can you ensure that your default internet browser doesn’t have any pop-up blockers or content blockers active?

If that doesn’t resolve the problem can you please use the directions found here and send over a set of logs to our File Uploader?

safari doesn’t have any pop-up blockers or content blockers active.
I send you the logs from my library (Roon server).

hi daniel
did you get my logs? Unfortunately I entered my name without an underline (Urs Klauser instead of Urs_Klauser) and now I can’t change the name anymore …

hi daniel
what’s going on? no answer since 2 days …
I sent you the log-files again with the name Urs_Klauser.

Hey @Urs_Klauser,

Thanks for the follow-up info and patience so far! We were able to examine the logs you sent over and have the following thoughts:

Can you also test using a different web browser altogether?

With that, can you also review the firewall settings on the Mac? Here’s more information on this:

You can also temporarily disable your mac firewall and see if you’re able to connect.

Can you please navigate to macOS System Settings > Privacy & Security > Local Network , and make sure Roon is allowed. If it is already enabled, toggle it off and on again. Then reboot your Mac, and see if the same issue persists.

Thank you!

Hi benjamin

Thanks for your answer.
I have now tried again all your suggestions.
I could only use Firefox as browser because Google Chrome is not compatible with Mac OS Catalina.
Unfortunately, no success and still the same problem:
The Mac appears as “ready” but cannot be connected.

What do you think of the following idea?
First log in to Roon and deauthorize my Mac as a Roon server (log out the device from Roon).

Afterwards, log in again and reauthorize the SAME Mac as a Roon server and restore my music library from the backup.

Does this work without losing my settings and data?

Hey @Urs_Klauser,

Since it’s still your original Roon Server machine, you won’t need to restore any backups in this case - it will connect you to your same Roon database and account. Give it a try and let me know how it goes! :+1:

hi benjamin
thanks!
will try it on monday and tell you then.

Hi benjamin
Unfortunately, my idea was only partially successful …
After I deactivated the MacMini as a server and then re-registered and activated it, the connection was actually successful.
My entire, large music library was re-imported and appeared again with all the playlists.
BUT: almost all the playlists are incomplete or even completely empty!
Many titles from Qobuz also appear as “not available”, although they were all playable before and are also available directly on Qobuz.

I then tried to restore my music library using the last backup.
This resulted in the exact same problem as before:
The MacMini appears as “ready”, but when I click on “connect” nothing happens again.

What should I do now?

By the way: Safari or the firewall have never been the problem. Roon works perfectly with both Safari and Firefox.

@Urs_Klauser

Prioritizing Benjamins instructions you can give this a try as well:

Step 1. Perform a backup and shutdown all endpoints and your server.

Step 2. Delete Roon

Step 3. Reboot

Step 4. Open the “Go menu” located in your Apple menu (Finder) select the drop-down “Go to folder” and then enter each line below in turn in the field to reach a given directory. Once there delete each parent directory that references the name “Roon”.

Example: When performing this action on my Macbook using “~/Library/Saved Application State” it reveals the hidden directory “com.roon.Roon.savedState”. In my example, you would select this directory for deletion.

~/Library/Application Support
~/Library/Saved Application State
/Library/Caches
~/Library/Caches

Step 5. Reinstall Roon

  • When reinstalling you should see a prompt requesting that you Allow “Roon” to find devices on local networks.

Step 6. Power on your server and endpoints. Reinstall your backup

@Urs_Klauser

Prior to the above attempt simply logging out of Qobuz/Tidal and rebooting the server might help as well.

Thanks, Singleton!
Ok, will try this first.
But my playlists are originally from iTunes, not from Qobuz. Are they not saved in the Roon backup?

@Urs_Klauser ,

My instructions are an attempt to allow you to clear the cache of the current Roon installation followed by a fresh installation.

If your backup includes imported playlist from iTunes then I would hope that they would be restored “should the experiment prove successful”

@Urs_Klauser ,

Now I think I understand your meaning. Yes, you are correct if your not using Qobuz/Tidal my second recommendation to log out and back in again shouldn’t apply.

Hello @Urs_Klauser ,

Are you by any chance running Roon directly from the .DMG file? I looked over the logging for your account and it looks like you are getting an error with updating Roon that is typically related to not having Roon installed to your Library folder properly.

Hi Noris
Thanks for your answer.
No, I downloaded Roon again from your homepage, unpacked the DMG file and dragged the Roon image into the Mac’s program folder.
In „About Roon“ it is shown as Roon Version 2.0 (build 1470).
As far as I can tell, Roon is now working perfectly again as it used to.
My history (played tracks) is also there, going back to 2019.
I’m actually quite happy with this state.

The only thing missing are my playlists that I created earlier with iTunes (xml file) and that Roon apparently didn’t find at all or didn’t read in completely.
Do you have any tips here?
Does the XML file (iTunes Music Library.xml) have to be in a very specific place in the music folder?

But I don’t want to try too many things anymore because I’m afraid that then - once again - nothing will work like before.
Maybe I have to create my most important playlists again…

@Noris

Another problem:
Yesterday I noticed that some things at the „focus“-function aren’t working properly:
After a while, the entries for the artists in the “focus” (countries, genres, type of artist…) disappear or only a few are visible.
The “show more” link then doesn’t work either.
If Roon is closed and restarted, all entries are there again, but disappear again after a while.

The situation with the Roon app on the iPad (iPad Air, 4th generation, iOS 18.0.1) is even worse:
the only thing that helps is turning the iPad off completely and restarting it.

And If I edit the information in self-imported albums (e.g. country of origin), it is saved, but the artist does not appear when searching later with “focus”.

Are these bugs known?
What can I do to get it working again?

@Urs_Klauser ,

Until you here back from Noris give this a try.
Step 1. Shut down all end points
Step 2. Reboot your server

If that doesn’t work edit your message to Noris with the @ symbol proceeding his name so that you can ping him.

Hello Singleton
Thanks very much for your quick answer and also the hint with the @ !
Shutdown all endpoints and server helped for issue 1, at least for the last two hours …
but only on the macmini (roon server), on the iPad the same issue as before.

and no success with issue two.
