I have a Nucleus One

Networking Gear & Setup Details

I have an ORBI wifi system. The Nucleus One is hardwired directly to the ORBI hub, and sits physically right beside it. My My ORBI hub is hardwired to our XFinity modem.

Connected Audio Devices

I have KEF speakers, Devialet speakers, ADAM monitors. All very high quality.

Number of Tracks in Library

I have a local NAS with maybe 10,000 tracks on it., But let’s focus on Roon’s stability when streaming for TIDAL or QOBUZ.

Description of Issue

Roon stops streaming constantly. It might happen multiple times in a row. Or it might play for 20min and then cut out. It is frequent enough that I don’t trust it to continue playing during the course of an evening.

Our ORBI system is EXTREMELY ROBUST and blazingly fast. All our other devices, computers, cell phones etc etc continue to work just fine while Roon either complains that the network is slow, or it simply stops with no warnings given. ALL audio devices that are connected to Roon stop streaming at the same time. It doesn’t matter if they are hardwired, or working over WIFI. All audio device cease playing.

A major shortcoming of Roon is that it does not seem to ever recover from a stoppage. I always have to go hit Play again manually. Why?? If I am streaming via a “Radio Station” what is so difficult about sensing that playback has ceased, and the system itself can hit Play again. Brief stoppages would be much more tolerable if Roon executed a recovery.

Put the nucleus on the xfinity modem and see if it makes a difference.

Interesting idea. How about the rest of my audio devices all over the house? Do I move them to the Xfinity modem too? How about my NAS, so the Nucleus can see it?

Connecting the Nucleus One directly to the Xfinity modem is actually a very good diagnostic step.
You don’t need to move any of your other devices — if the network is configured correctly and Xfinity is managing the DHCP server, the Nucleus should still be able to see:

  • all of your audio endpoints throughout the house
  • your NAS
  • your control devices (phones, tablets, computers)

This test simply helps us determine whether the Orbi router layer is introducing instability or multicast interruptions that affect Roon playback.

A few additional suggestions:

1. Try another Ethernet cable for the Nucleus One

Faulty or aging cables can cause intermittent packet loss that only shows up under continuous audio streaming.

2. If the issue continues

Please reproduce the issue once more and note:

  • the exact local time and date the dropout occurs
  • which zone(s) were playing at that moment
  • track name

With a precise timestamp, we can pull the correct logs and investigate what the server was doing when playback stopped.

I am honestly highly dubious of the value in relocating this one device. There are strong reasons for keeping all my devices on our house network. Security and simplicity to name two. Orbi/Netgear provides robust anti-malware protection for everything on our network. Also, my house network has been heavily debugged and vetted. It IS configured correctly. If it were not and I had packet loops and loss my Sonos system would be the first thing to stop working. I am tired of being told the problem must be my network. A bad cable. A bad switch or hub. How about giving me a little credit that I did not dig up the oldest rattiest cable I could find for my hi-fidelity system?

Everything else in my house works completely fine. Including my Sonos system which I am trying to move away from for all the reasons that Roon exists.

What I will do is this. I will NOT haul my roon server out to my garage thereby greatly increasing the length of cable between it and everything else it is talking to. I will start off by noting time stamps and tracks when the system cuts out. At the same time, please tell me where the logs are located - on the Nucleus One presumably - and how I can access them myself? Can you provide me with anything you can to help me diagnose the problem locally? I am reasonably tech savvy and accustomed to scanning log files.

This time I was playing a track from my local NAS. Roon stopped playback at 10:42am.

Is anyone reading this? Will you check my Roon server logs? I am providing you the information you asked for. Please respond.

I tailed the Nucleus One logs and just waited for playback to cut out. It’s happening so frequently I don’t have to wait very long. This is what the end of the logs contain at that time. Playback stopped everywhere at the same time. Five different devices.

I have reached a reasonable conclusion to this problem after doing my own investigation. I figured out where the Nucleus One logs were, tailed them, waited for the next occurrence of the problem, and then uploaded portion of logs from that time to ChatGPT. ChatGPT did a GREAT of isolating the problem.

There is ONE audio device on my network, a Bluesound NODE connected via 5Ghz WIFI. The logs show long rtt sync Bluesound NODE warnings It was causing RAAT (Roon Advanced Audio Transport) to stop playback to ALL devices because it is very finickly about keeping every device in sync.

OK fair enough. But vadim, I hope you’re reading this. Juggling the location of my Roon server, or going around and replacing all my cables or whatever was TOTALLY NOT the right solution. And in addition, the Roon server logs all the information necessary to report back to the user a simple message like “Playback to all devices was stopped because of the Bluesound NODE (192.168.x.y) device. The connection between that device and the Roon server is unstable”.

I’ve done years of writing logging into server code. Roon, you can do much better by your users if you bubble these problems up into simple human readable and actionable messages. So so much better than failing silently.

You have done a fantastic Job here!

After we double checked the report coming from your server we might want to say the same thing as you have concluded yourself.

From this point I believe we both have the same thought: you’d need to test out your Group of audio endpoints without Bluesound Node and see if it gets any better. From the logs I may assume that it will and then we ‘d recommend to wire it via ethernet cable and check again.

My issue is resolved. I now know that if latency is too high on any one output device it will bring playback to all devices down as per RAAT. And I know which device was the problem which means I can address it.

I also believe that the Nucleus One could easily inform the app of what’s going on and provide users extremely useful information to debug their system. I hope your team considers that.

I do believe that this is reasonable feedback and a valid point. Since this is not a current feature of Roon, I would recommend also posting your suggestion in the Feature Suggestions section of the site.

Our product team and developers keep a close eye on that category, so that’s definitely the best place to propose a change like this and get feedback from the Community.
