Roon won't start on Windows 10 PC (ref#2TVV4U)

I see no sign of Roon showing up in your screenshots, only RoonAppliance and RoonServer?

You should be seeing something like this:

Are you sure that there is no error for roon.exe being caught by the Windows Event Viewer

When I open Roon it appears in taskmanager for 2 seconds, then it disappears.

So check the Windows Event Viewer to see what’s being reported. Look in Windows Logs > Application and filter for Errors…

How can I add the log here??

No access to file for one of the following reasons: There is a problem with the network connection, with the disk on which the file is stored, with the storage drivers on this Computer, or the disk is missing. Program Roon was closed because of this error.

The error value is displayed in the Additional Data section.

User action

  1. Reopen the file. This may be a temporary problem that will resolve itself if the program is run again.

  2. If access to the file is still not possible and

  • If the file is on the network, the network administrator should check that there is no problem with the network and that it is possible to connect to the server.

  • If the file is on a removable drive, such as a floppy disk or CD-ROM, you should verify that the disk is correctly placed in the disk drive.

  1. Check and repair the file system with CHKDSK. To do this, click Start, Run and type CMD. Click OK and type CHKDSK /F on the command prompt. Then press ENTER.

  2. If the problem persists, you should restore the file via a backup medium.

  3. Determine whether other files can be opened on the same disk. If this is not the case, the disk is damaged. If it’s a hard drive, contact your network administrator or Hardware vendor for support.

If the file is missing, this could be as a result of your Anti-virus program quarantining roon.exe because of a false positive. Some third-party AVs have a habit of doing this.

Hey @Marco_de_Volder,

Thanks for sharing all the additional information, and thank you @Suedkiez + @Geoff_Coupe for the follow up suggestions!

Marco, both @Suedkiez and @Geoff_Coupe have suggested excellent next steps here:

Let me know if either of the above help!

Nothing helps.
SSD drive no errors.(SSD drive is Windows 10)
Other apps open normally.
Tried another nvidia driver, didn’t work either.
Roon completely removed and reinstalled. Problem remains the same.
1 month ago it was still working perfectly.

Hey @Marco_de_Volder,

Sorry to hear that, we’ll need to take your case back to our development team for further discussion and investigation.

In the meantime, do you have any specific resolution settings enabled on the PC? We believe the issue may be realted to how OpenGL is currently being rendered on the machine. I hope to have more information to share soon, and thank you for your patience in the meantime!

Nvidia settings are fairly standard. There have been nvidia driver updates in the meantime. Maybe something went wrong there, specifically on my PC (hardware dependent??). It’s an older upgraded PC that works perfectly for multimedia (ultra HD/4K high resolution audio). As I mentioned earlier, it is strange that roon worked perfectly before, but suddenly it doesn’t anymore. While other software works perfectly. I have attached some screenshots regarding nvidia settings (if that is what you mean)

It is true that the PC does something for a while (for 2 seconds), this is also visible on the windows cursor (which flashes 2 times).
This is also visible in task manager.
(Roon.exe appears briefly in the list)
In other words, the roon’s startup is being prevented by something in the display driver.
The roon server is still active.

Hey @Marco_de_Volder,

We took your case to the development team, but our findings were inconclusive, unfortunately. Have you tested out using a more standard resolution, not in 4k?

Let us know if the same issue occurs on other resolutions. Thank you!

The same issue occurs on other resolutions.
Tried different settings on both screens,no solution.

Hi @Marco_de_Volder,
Thanks for trying that. We’ll bring this back to the development team for more troubleshooting.

Hi @Marco_de_Volder,

You have my apologies for the delay in following up!

Would you be able to upload a copy of the event viewer crash report as well as a specific date and time of a crash?

Also, have you tried using a single monitor yet?

What happens if you turn Roon Server off first, and then attempt to open your Roon app?

We’ll be on standby for your reply!

Hello Benjamin,
What I have already tried:
1 or 2 screens (PC screen and/or TV)
Shutting down Roon’s server doesn’t help either.
I just started my PC in safe mode + network and then started roon.
Then I get a fatal error related to the nvidia driver (open gl), which is logical because the driver has not been started. (see screenshot) When I start the PC in normal mode, I do not get an error message and it does not start up either. The server does start up. I can use roon with my smartphone as it should be. The problem here is still that the roon interface still does not want to start on the PC. Consequently, I cannot use roon arc because it says “not allowed”. This probably needs permission from the roon interface I think??? What I also noticed is that the roon appliance uses a huge amount of memory (see screenshot)

Roon arc is now also working again. Logging in again and synchronizing was the solution.
