Schiit devices (Wyrd and Yggdrasil) - Disappearing and reappearing rapidly in app when mounted USB to NUC

I updated Roon and Fedora 26 today.
My devices attached to the core (an intel NUC) by USB to a Schiit Wyrd, come and disappear in the roon client software. It appears that the RATT Server process (mono-sgen) is getting a SIGSEGV. As soon as I turn off the Wyrd the problem goes away. Removing the Wyrd, and just plugging in the Yggdrasil directly generates the same behavior… but a Chord Mojo does not. I’d guess that the issue is likely the USB connection to the Schiit hardware that is the issue. Noting that this has been working flawlessly until today.

I’ve been running a stable configuration for months, but took both updates (because gee what could go wrong?)

Any ideas?

Hi Charles,

Since you typed @support in your message, they will be notified. No need to flag your post too.

Hopefully they will be along soon to help you out.

Hi @Charles_Smith ----- Thank you for the report and sharing your feedback with us. The insight is very appreciated!

Moving forward, to help aide in my understanding of this behavior, may I very kindly ask you to please provide me with the following information:

  • An expanded description of your current setup, using this link as a guide.

  • When you performed the mentioned tests with the “Wyrd”, Yggdrasil", and the “Mojo” were you using the same USB cable and port on the NUC for each device?

  • During your troubleshooting, if you have another device available such as a laptop or desktop computer, have you tried setting it up as a “Roon remote” and mounting one of the DACs having this issue to it to verify if things are stable?

Roon version 1.3 build 262 stable 64 bit on server and client
Linux Fedora 26, up to date with all patches
SELinix disabled
Hardware is a Intel NUC NUC6i7KYK
Storage is a Samsung 960 PRO Series - 2TB PCIe NVMe card
Music is stored on a NAS connected by a managed gigabit switch
QNAP TS-421 (up to date software) dual gig ethernet conf
4 TB drives in a RAID 5 configuration
Western Digital WDC WD40EFRX-68WTON080.0 (matched)
all show good smart status in their last extended
test as well as in current short tests.
Filesystems show no errors
Netgear GS724T managed switch, it’s running a few levels back firmware and has been
stable since spring 2017
FWIW everything in this part of the network is backed by a single APC Smart UPS2200
(which is a considerably better then average ups then ‘normal’)

NUC – Netgear GS724T ==== QNAP TS-421
(with 16 gb raw storage in a single ext4 filesystem)

There was no other load on the NUC minimal load on the NAS.

The configuration runs properly with Airplay devices (a Denon receiver
and a NAIM MuSo), as well as with a macbook client running wirelessly
and roving inside the local network across multiple access points.

Over the last several months it’s been stable running most days with the
Schiit equipment.

Library is 10182 tracks

Involved equipment

NUC— USB to Wyrd (USB to) Yggdrasil
or
NUC— USB to Yggdrasil

USB Port (Back panel)
USB cable (#1 from back panel to Schiit Wyrd)
USB cable (#2 from front panel to Schiit Yddrasill or from Wyrd to Yggdrasil)
USB cable (#3 from Wyrd to Yddrasill or from front panel to Yggdrasil)

NUC --1—Wyrd --2-- Yddrasill
NUC --2—Yggdrasil
NUC f–2-- Yggdrasil
NUC f --3-- Yggdrasil
This seems to rule out a single port or cable as 3 cables and two ports fail.
Unless we have
multiple cable/port failures, which in the absence of a power issue seem unlikely.
See reference to sine-wave power supply to ensure we do not have power issues.

Then I tested another DAC[mojo] (replace the Yggdrasil in this case using the front port
and a different cable (Mojo is Micro USB not The USB A to B of the Wyrd/Ydrasill).

In this case the device(mojo) shows up normally as a dac connected to the server,
and RAATServer does not crash.

Leading to…
it’s either the Yggdrasil which developed a problem during the upgrade
(as it was working earlier in the day before upgrading the software)
or it’s the RAAT Server on Fedora.

I also tried the Yggdrasil alone connected to a Macbook pro running roon (the server still on fedora). That worked fine. The coonection there was a little different, the USB was cable #2 with a USB C to USB A dongle, and the macbook was connected to the same network switch through a wireless access point. connected via gig ethernet.

Describe The Issue

The Crash, As Noted earlier RAAT Server gets a SIGSEGV and crashes as soon as I connect
the Ydrasill. I get a list of devices in the client (indicating it’s scanning the server
hardware and sending some of it) which blinks away in a flash.

Hi @Charles_Smith ----- Thank you for the very detailed follow up, the feedback /insight are very appreciated!

Moving forward, I would like to grab a set of your Roon and RAATServer logs so our techs can have a closer look into the behavior you’ve reported to us. May I kindly ask you to please use the instructions found here on how to locate and send your logs to us.

Eric,
Thanks for your continuing efforts, I did update to 1.3 build 269 and did not see any change in behavior. The problem seems to remain outstanding.

  • Charlie

Hi @Charles_Smith ---- Thank you for the update after the latest build release went live, I appreciate the feedback! My apologies for the slow response here.

Moving forward, I have updated my report to let our techs know that the issue is still occurring on build 269. Furthermore, I have enabled diagnostics on your account as well so we can get some deeper insight into this behavior.

Once I get an update from the team on their progress, I will be sure to share their thoughts/findings asap.

-Eric

I will be out for a couple!e days but will enable the failing hardware Thursday to help generate some logs.

Have you updated to the latest and does problem still persist?

Yes Evan, everything is up to date including a move to Fedora 27 (and all associated updates)_.
Thanks for asking.

Hi @Charles_Smith
I had exactly the same issue, with my Yggdrasil, when I moved from a MacBook Pro to a NUC with ROCK installed.
All problems disappeared when I updated the Yggy with the new USB Gen5 (available on Schiit site).
Up to now nobody, included Roon support, could explain the reasons of such unusual behaviour. Your experience, anyway, is confirming NUC and Yggdrasil (at least with USB Gen3) have a sort of evident incopatibility
Hope it helps

Hi @Charles_Smith ----- Thank you for touching base with me and providing the results of troubleshooting exercise proposed in our PM conversation. The insight is very appreciated!

Moving forward, I have updated your ticket with the provided feedback and have passed it back over to our techs for review. Once the team has evaluated all the information from your update and have advised on the “next steps forward”, I will be sure to follow up ASAP.

-Eric

Hi @Charles_Smith ----- Again, thank you for your continued feedback and more importantly, thank you for your patience.

Moving forward, I spent some time today discussing this behavior you are experiencing with the Wyrd and Yggdrasil DACs, with our tech team and our CTO. During our meeting we tested with 3 different Schiit products in our QA lab (1 x Gen 2 board, 1 x Gen 3 boards, 2 x Gen 5 board) using ROCK, Ubuntu 16.04, and a SonicTransporter (which uses Fedora under the hood). All test runs produced no issues when the DACs were mounted directly to the units via USB.

There haven’t been changes to how Roon interacts with DAC drivers on linux for quite some time, so we are fairly confident that the trigger for this issue was not a software update on our end. It is slightly suspicious that this happened right around your upgrade to Fedora 26. That might point towards a compatibility problem introduced in the Fedora upgrade.

It would be interesting to know if your DAC works for you on another Linux distribution/machine—that has the potential to isolate the problem to just within your Fedora installation. Unfortunately, since we seem to be unable to reproduce this and establish failure as a baseline, it would not be productive for us to run that test.

Please let me know what you think and I will be glad to assist in anyway possible with the proposed test from above.

-Eric

Eric, I decided to see if I can duplicate with Schiit’s gen 5 USB board. I’m probably two months (maybe three) from having enough time to write a custom USB probe driver or do serious changes (like backleveling the full reinstall) and I can think of some more interesting projects … if I’m unique seeing this.

I did fall back to earlier versions of Fedora with no luck, and it is not tied to a specific port, so that makes it less likely but not impossible for this be related to the fedora version. That said I only had a few versions back available so I think my test was likely inconclusive.

Mu suspiciion is that I might (and this is the weird part) have a USB board that started to fail around that the time of the upgrade. I never turn this stuff off, and the upgrade would have been the first changes that might have resulted in temp variation in some time. I saw one other failure from a mac which I used in the interim on occasion… where I had a to power cycle to get things to work.
I replaced the board in the dac… and things work.

I have not tried reinserting the wyrd so thats the next thing to try (if the errors reoccur it will point right at the gen 3 board interface)…

I’ll try this next.
