It seems, that he is searching for a Roon endpoint with a DAC included.
So, the eversolo DMP-A6 Gen 2 seems to be the better solution, than a āblankā DAC.
Sorry to hear your Squeezebox Transporter has died.
Had a Squeezebox3 and a Touch in the past.
Would you able to stretch to a Mano ULTRA mkIII.5 Farad Music Streamer (but no screen)
Or within budget a MATRIX MINI-I 4 PRO Music Streamer
There also a few 2nd RPi products in the āFor Saleā category
and
but you would need to add a screen and a case, so this gets and looks a bit DIY.
So the
Eversolo DMP-A6 GEN 2 Streamer (or even the
EVERSOLO DMP-A6 GEN 2 MASTER Streamer, if you can) is probably your ticket as a drop in replacement, for SQ, usability and looks.

Yeah so just to confirm, youāre asking for recommendations for generally what one would call a streamer rather than a DAC, although in this case you want it to have a DAC. Iād consider separate DAC and streamer as an option.
There are Bluesound and Wiim products that fit that budget.
As someone who has just spent £1150 on a new DAC I feel in a good place to comment.
I was running a pi4 using an Allo Boss DAC hat, but I was starting to suspect the dac might not be delivering the full potential of my hi fi. It sounded a bit thin, lacking in bass. A bit to clipped and digital.
I have swapped out the dac allo boss hat for a chord Qutest , connected to the pi via usb.
This has now been playing 24/7 for 3 weeks and itās transformed my listening experience. The chord is so good. The system sounds warmer and less clipped. Iām using the warm filter as I think my system is slightly on the brighter side, so the warm filter just compliments it perfectly.
I appreciate the chord might cost more in the USA, and you had a $1000 notional budget, but if you can stretch to a Qutest, I would certainly recommend trying one.
I have two TRANSPORTERs. It is fairly common that these units eventually fail because of a bad internal power supply that runs the display, etc. See this thread on how to fix it. (I personally had this problem, ordered the replacement power supplyāactually ordered 3 of them because they were only a couple of bucks and shipping cost was actually more than cost of unit. Opened the TRANSPORTER case, unplugged the old power supply, plugged in the new one, closed the case and all worked perfectly. That was maybe 4 years ago for me.
Thanks. In my case, it seems like the front displays donāt light up anymore. I tried a factory reset. I have a late-production model, which is missing the knob. My remote is also broken, so at the moment, I donāt have many options for troubleshooting.
Iād try replacing the power supply as mentioned in the links I provided. It will only cost < $10, and is plug and play. The hardest part is simply unscrewing the case so you can open it up. You donāt need the remote to do all that.
p.s. the versions with no knob are identical in terms of production as the original. They are not actually ālate productionā. They found a bunch of Transporters that were complete except for the knob, so they āfinishedā them by putting a plate where the knob goes. The insides are all āoriginalā production.
