Network Details (Including networking gear model/manufacturer and if on WiFi/Ethernet)
I am on a WiFi network via ViaSat satellite.

Audio Devices (Specify what device you’re using and its connection type - USB/HDMI/etc.)

I want to use Roon for Sonos as I have much more music than their 65K limit allows. They are on the same wifi network via Sonos Boost. My music is on a combination of local drives and a NAS. All the music seems to have indexed correctly. The NAS is accessed via a mapped drive on the Core.

Description Of Issue

I can see the Sonos speakers (I have a lot) on my Core computer’s Network section. However the instructions say that I should be able to see them also in the Roon software under the Audio section under Network. Nothing is there. I have not set up any other Roon software other than the Core at this time. Roon went through and indexed 16,410 albums and 303,203 tracks and is now up to date. It will play on my computer, but the reason I want to use your program is to play it on Sonos. I’m still in my trial period and don’t want to keep it if it won’t work for that purpose. Sonos works fine with it’s own app, but I want to be able to play all my music on it. Thank you!

Would you kindly be more specific on your network hardware from ViaSat.

Exactly how many Sonos pieces do you have and what models?

V

Also and this may be obvious, but the speakers must be on before Roon can see them.

Hi @Cynthia_Fraase,

Welcome to the forum. Can you please provide some more information regarding your ViaSat WiFi network? What is the model/manufacturer of the router you are using?

It would also be good to have a screenshot of your Roon Settings -> Audio tab, it should look something like this and you will need to enable your Sonos Devices here before you are able to select them as output zones:

For more information regarding enabling and selecting zones, please look over our Audio Basics Setup Guide.

I’ve attached pictures of my Roon settings in audio. The Sonos speakers are not showing up. And yes, they are on and work fine with the Sonos app. I’ve also attached a picture of my network from the Core computer I have loaded Roon onto. You can see all the Sonos speakers fine there. So why not in the Roon app?

The ViaSat Router is Model No: RG1100 and broadcasts in 2.4 and 5G. The Core computer is connected via WiFi and the Sonos speakers are on the same network, but connected via a Boost that in plugged into the Ethernet.

Here is a list of all the Sonos speakers I have around the house - quite a few so on their advice I added a couple more Boosts to help them stay connected as it is a fairly large area on two levels.

As I noted earlier, they all work fine in the Sonos app, but I’d like to use this to access all the music in my library. The Roon app did fine in indexing all of it. But I don’t just want to play it over my computer speakers! Not worth the money to do that.
Thanks for any help.
Cindy

Hi @Cynthia_Fraase,

Thank you for sharing those screenshots. Since I am not seeing any listing under your “Networked” section, it appears that a firewall may be blocking proper communication through Roon. Since you are using a Windows PC, I would verify that both Roon.exe and RAATServer.exe have been added as exceptions to your Windows firewall.

You can use these instructions to add the exceptions and the .exe themselves would be located in your Database Location/Application folder path. I would also add these exceptions to any Antivirus or other Firewall blocking applications you may have.

Can you give that a try and let me know if it helps?

Good thought, but nothing changed. The Roon exe’s were already added under the Private exceptions in my Windows firewall, I added Public access just in case. That’s the only Firewall I have. I use AVG Antivirus and I added both the exe’s to the exceptions for that as well. I’m still not seeing the Sonos speakers. Those are the only firewalls or antivirus products I use.

One thing I was wondering about is that the Core computer is connected to the WiFi from the ViaSat Router, while the Sonos Boost is connected through an Ethernet connection. Could that have any effect? It wouldn’t seem so, but I’m not an expert on networking at all. My ethernet wasn’t working on my desktop and I didn’t have time to figure out the problem so I’ve just been using the WiFi which works fine. And I can see the Sonos speakers in the Network section on my computer. But that’s all that I can think of. I don’t even know if that makes sense. I’d really like to use your software if I can, so I hope we can figure this out.
Thanks,
Cindy

Also, I added Roon to my phone and now that shows up under the Network. No Sonos though.
Cindy

Hi @Cynthia_Fraase,

Thanks for checking the firewall aspect and for confirming your iOS device shows up as expected, I have a few other suggestions:

  1. Can you please try rebooting your Network, Boost and Roon Core (in that order) and let me know if that triggers a change in behavior?

  2. Are all your Sonos zones grouped at the present time? If you ungroup them via the Sonos App, does that change anything?

  3. Is there any change in behavior if you temporarily connect one of your Sonos zones to the router via Ethernet, bypassing the Boost?

  4. Would you by any chance have another PC around the house which you can use to temporarily host the Roon Core on? It would be a great data point if we could confirm if this occurs on two separate PCs.

  5. We have often found that ISP provided routers do not pass multicast traffic through properly, if you are comfortable with logging into the router Web Interface, can you check to see if you have an option to “enable multicast routing” or enable “IGMP Snooping/Proxying”? We have found these settings help multicast traffic routing in the past.

Thanks, it will take me a bit to try all those. I’ll let you know.
Cindy

Where you able to sort it out?
