Just have core on my PC, then have the remotes on my phone and tablet. I have been thinking of getting a mini pc to run roon but not got round to it yet.
Like a champ! Thanks. Now if I could just get star ratings on the discography screen, I’d be good to go.
Yep, I’m missing those too
on the album level for the beginning? Let 1.8 to get a chance to develop
I may be missing something here, so correct me if I’m wrong, but it sounds like you’re just running the full version of Roon rather than that AND Roon Server. If you just had the core running on your PC there would be no point in editing the theme files as you wouldn’t be able to see the results.
Perhaps Roon needs to embed something like this. That way we could have a unique theme for each album or artist
Sorry might be my terminology there as I have installed the full roon version which includes the server sorry. I just always call it that as it is the main machine with roon on it.
OK, so in which case I’d suggest installing Roon Server too, particularly if you want to continue editing themes. I was chatting with @Rugby yesterday, and he mentioned this exact problem. If you’re editing a theme file (or any other file in Roon) and Roon crashes, it can damage your database too. If you switch to using a combo of Roon Server and Roon (as a client rather than core) the worst that will happen is that you’ll crash the client, leaving your database intact.
I had a similar problem earlier today - where I couldn’t get Roon to load after a change to the theme - and I had to delete the database. Fortunately, this was the client database, which is a trivial problem. The core database, on the other hand, is a problem of biblical proportions if it messes up.
If I am to do that do I need to start afresh with roon as have been updating things in my library most of the day and don’t want to have to start from the beginning again
Listening to vinyl.
No, I think you just need to install to install the core then restore your existing database. When you boot Roon (as a client) you connect it to the new core. There’s some guidance in the knowledge base. I’ll try and find it for you.
Basically, all you’re doing if you install Roon Server is disambiguating the control side of Roon from the server. Once you restore you database you’ll be at exactly the same point you were when you backed it up.
I’ve just searched, and can’t find the article I remember, so maybe dig around in the forum.
Ok thanks I just DL the all in one version and presumed the server was auto running each time roon opened, guess I was wrong
It is, because the full version of Roon is both server and client when run on its own. When you run Roon Server, and use Roon to connect to it, Roon operates as a client.
Put another way, if I quit Roon the music carries on playing because Roon Server is still running in the background. In practice, you won’t see any difference when you run Roon, but it’s a safer option in these covid/theme editing times
Right I have installed roon server on the PC and just re-started the client on the same PC and it seems like I don’t need to do any more by the looks of it as it is were I left before I installed the server.
Excellent. At least the music won’t stop now every time you have to quit Roon to update the theme, and there’s less risk you’ll break anything important. Win, win.
I have just tried this exact point to see if the music would stop and when I closed roon down the music stopped on the PC, is that the correct behaviour that should happen as it seems like it should not do that.
EDIT
It’s ok figured it out and need to set up the DB on the server so will restore DB and see what happens.
Hmmm. OK, I think you need to work through migrating your core. Please read it carefully, as I don’t want to be responsible for misdirecting you, but here’s what I think you need to do …
- Create a backup.
- Go to Settings > General and then log out.
- Connect to your new core
- Restore database
And you should be good to go.
Franklin Gothic Book Regular>Lato-Regular; Franklin Gothic Regular>Lato-Medium + Lato-Bold. Background 616161
That looks good. Was the album title an intentional comment on Roon’s inability to string three words together?
