Showing (off) your Roon setup - description and photos [2023]

lovely… I was really looking hard at the device over the DAC. looking like a strange remote with a big volume knob… The ADI-2FS booklet, I really need :eyeglasses:

In case a tornado blows through the house the weight will keep the manual in place. There needs to be a Cliff Notes version. I keep the Radio Shack DB meter next to the DAC for protection. I’ll throw it at anyone messing with my settings on the RME.

Yes this is a brag post… and a half… Welcome to the man cave… and more…
Some updates to my setup… Migrated all my video / music and media over from USB-C 3.1 JBOD enclosure connected to my Roon Core that was behaving erratically. (the disk enclosure that is)

So Ive moved to a custom built JBOD using LSI 9201 16E SAS/SATA HBA in my NUC 12 Extreme connected via SAS 8088 cables to Silverstone DS380 enclosures with 8088 to 8087 adapter cards.

The DS380 has a hotswap backplane for 8 drives so the SATA to 8087 cables connects from backplane to the back of the PCI slot adapter. Should be faster and more reliable and drives will run cooler.
The DS380s are just dumb JBOD enclosures designed for small form factor motherboards but im just using them as disk enclosures to connect to the NUC.

Stablebit Drivepool manages all 16 Drives split into two big JBOD pools. (about 60TB) One for each enclosure. Could make it one pool but Im using one for backup for the other. One drive letter for each Drivepool and the balancer automatically fills the drives sequentially (keeps files together where possible on a single drive before it automatically starts using the next drive) Easier to recover from drive failure because there’s no RAID or rebuild to worry about, and you dont have to cross your fingers about having a second drive fail during rebuild. Puts lets stress on the whole system and the drives should last longer. Some of my oldest 3TB drives are 8+ years old! (yes they are the backup drives for now but about to be replaced with 8TB as I upgrade the main ones to 16TB drives)

Lots of pics in here of the construction and evolution of my setup over the last 5 years…

The Roon Core upgrade… Yes its a very very over the top NUC 12 Extreme now with 60TB of SAS storage…

Because who doesnt mind a bit of WWII shooty shooty when your listening to the RME ADI2 DAC and Roon pumping through the headphones…

On the over the top way too expensive… water cooled Intel 13900K / RTX 4090… with 48" LC C1 OLED… Roon in glorius 4K HDR 120FPS OLED

Or… sometimes you just need to go analog and do nothing… while drinking amber frothy cold stuff… my wife would say im good at that… but i have too many hobbies and toys so doing nothing, so it’s actually a luxury with the iFi Gryphon fed by Ortofon OM10 Super Fritz Gyger sending the vibes through a Tube Box DS… from the round spinny black thing (Technics SL-1210 MK5)

The very old but wonderful Sony STR5200ES still going strong, supplemented by 2 x 400W RMS rack mount amps for the equally very old Velodyne Subs (no longer self powered - leaky old plate Amp capacitors replaced twice… I gave up…

The Projection setup with Nvidia Shield Pro for Roon pretty pics… (And EMBY for movies)
Harmony Elite Remote and Hub setup to drive everything except the kitchen sink…

Yes custom remounted centre speaker behind acoustically transparent screen…
Sony SS X70ED 7.2 Surround … Matching floor standers all round… with the centre remounted in custom enclosure. (yes same internal volume and port tuning as the original centre)

The iPad mini / iDSD Signature combo with Fostex TH610 Lawton Cups for just lounging about… or with the iPhone SE for mobile duties… (now replaced by iFI Gryphon for mobile duties)

Why have one pair of standard Fostex TH610s when you can have 4 different sounding headphone with gorgeous hand made Lawton chambers…

And lets not forget the piece of resistance, Roon ARC in the pride and joy of my life… (car) (Zfold 4 above, Mustang Bullitt factory radio with Wireless Android upgrade)

Of course the important brag photos of the car!

Oh and who doesnt enjoy a cold frothy amber liquid with Roon pumping out pinball wizard and ACADACA in the background while you smash a small shiny ball around… (a home made digital pinball with 500+ tables/PACMAN/Space Invaders etc…)

And when everything really just gets too much…
There’s always the hot tub time machine with Sonos Move (in stereo of course) and Phillips Hue Go for ambiance… Cheers… now where did i put that beer…

In Germany we have a nasty term for that ‘beer’. :speak_no_evil:

Apart from that - nice cave.

Does that term involve “horses”?? As does our Dutch term…

Different. It’s Grachten and P*sse

with Vinylstudio, ofcourse

Vinylstudio is awesome and - despite the rather retro windows 3.1 design - by far the best software available for Vinyl rips.

True ……

In the Netherlands we love Heineken

Absolutely fine with that. Try to consume more domestically. Export less

And to be fair. There are lots of German brands far worse than Heineken :grimacing:
Compared to Belgium both of our countries are in minor league.
