Showing (off) your Roon setup - description and photos [2023]

Nice May

I love seeing so many Holo DACs in this thread as of late (I’ve become a bit of a fanboy lol). Even though I haven’t been using Roon much as of late, I feel like I should contribute my Holo products as well. Recently added the Red, and it sounds quite fantastic.

Holo Red is connected to the Spring 3 KTE via Audioquest Cinnamon USB. Balanced interconnects are Straight Wire Maestro. Speaker cables are Straight Wire Rhapsody. Preamp is a Freya-S running in passive mode. Amp is a Bryston 3BST & speakers are B&W 803 Nautilus. Turntable is a Denon DP-790 with a Orotfon 2M Bronze ran into a Project Tube Box S.

Hey Guys,

after a few years collecting, assembling, moving and building i finally can attribute to this great thread. I live in Europe so maybe some obscure brands but here we go;

Roon ROCK [on i7 NUC]
Topping D30Pro DAC
Schiit Freya+ Tube pre-amp (in the cupboard)
DIY/build mono-block poweramps using Ncore NC250MP class D modules;

  1. casing bought separately
  2. milled a completely new backplate to make room for XLR connectors and created all connectors recessed so plugs do not stick out of the back
  3. modified an extra board to manage the VU-meters and soft power on/off for the amp boards

→ all fully balanced

Lo-Fi Elipson Media Center (to stream BT, use CD/radio, USB, Spotify connect and such)
Wheel2 recordplayer black edition

→ both unbalanced

Bringing the sound to my Elipson 1303 Foster Tweeter vintage loudspeakers. All units replaced or refurbished. Put on spikes, added a floorplate.

All signal cables from Mogami (XLR and RCA)
Speakercables assembled and build with 2x4mm2 twisted pro-wires, cotton sleeves and goldplated bananaplugs.

When listening i pull out the speakers to approx 60cm from the wall and i enjoy them everyday (it’s my livingroom). Elipsons use a Helmholz resonator, front-ported base, rear-ported mid they sound great. Nice wide soundstage with well defined image. Baseports filled to dampen base, added a sub (not in image) from KEF with lowpas set to 50Hz so only to add a little bit to lowest end. Sounds contradictive maybe but the 2 10" woofers from the Elipsons created too much base in my room. The dampening via the port takes base away, and 1 10" active KEF adds a little back. It works for me

Happy listening!!

This is good practice IMO; so many systems in here appear to be compromised by speaker placement. Against a wall rarely works for serious* listening - so slide ‘em out when required :+1:

*assuming serious fits with ‘enjoyable hobby’

Mote photos of those amps please. Very impressive.

Agree, superb album. Great sounding copy too.

The 1303’s were one of my first “better” speakers :loud_sound: Great sound.

I’d rather just set them up properly and leave them there rather than pulling them out every time I want to listen and “eyeballing” proper placement.

But I can… so…

Of course, me too, and we’re clearly lucky enough to be able to do that full time

However, I’ve had situations where the best speaker/sitting position isn’t convenient/practical/welcome; meaning day-to-day the stereo concedes

Trouble sleeping (as well)

I have a tape on the floor, below the plates, matching up with a marker at the back. So positioning is 10sec job.

Hey Craig,

Thanks for your interest. It seems i have not yet shot a very good photo of the end product but here you can see it in the preparation. (think without the tape and all connectors in place)

The original backplate replaced by a new plate, along with a set of walls and connector plate to construct it this way. All connector descr. etched on. Pretty nice eh.

Then the inside where you can see the back mountingplate i had made to place both boards onto. Left top is the Ncore NC250MP, right below the steeringboard for the soft on/off and VU-meter. You can see the recessed connectors really good, it gave me the opportunity to decrease depth by 5cm.

Sideview of the pair.

Hello,
I have a question about the Ifi Zen Stream, does it stream ALAC?

It should stream what is on Tidal (Flac and MQA) Spotify, I do not know about DNLA, etc. If with roon the answer is yes (not 100% sure, I use HQP that does not support ALAC alone but with roon it does support ALAC and I use my Zen Stream as NAA so ALAC it works).
