I reckon his wires cost more than my whole hi fi
My system is installed in a semi-truck sleeper cab, so power, vibration, networking, and space constraints are very different from a typical home setup.
Core Software
Roon (local library + Tidal integration)
HQPlayer (upsampling to DSD512)
HQPlayer filters: poly-sinc-gauss-xla, ASDM7EC-light, SDM, DSD512
Roon ARC for mobile listening
Core Hardware (Roon Core + HQPlayer)
Custom-built desktop PC installed in the sleeper
Intel Core Ultra 9 285K
NVIDIA RTX 5090 GPU used for HQPlayer processing
96GB DDR5 RAM
DAC / Playback
Speakers / Audio System
Nakamichi Dragon (11.4.6) system used in studio mode
Listening position calibrated manually for the cab environment
Networking
Local network inside the truck:
TP-Link 10G switch
Router running Asuswrt-Merlin firmware
Tailscale for remote access
Devices connected via Ethernet (CAT6e)
Storage
NAS (TeraStation Pro) for media library
FLAC, DSF-based music collection
And the truck has an additional feature that it is able to drive. ![]()
Yeah, I mostly use it for driving… the sound system is just the co-pilot. ![]()
Cool system! Enjoying these now. Thanks for posting.
Glad you’re enjoying them… That filter combo really clicked for me after a lot of experimenting.
Haven’t shared an updates to my modest - but very enjoyable - set up. Added/adjusted quite a bit in the last year or so.
2.1 channel listening:
7.1 channel listening / viewing - all of the above with one Saga 2 input being the Front Pre-Amp channels to my Denon AVR-3300 for movie viewing. In addition to the Vandersteens for front L/R I have Sound Dynamics for center, rear and Atmos surround listening. A bit of a Frankenstein set up, but it works very well for my needs.
Cambridge Audio Azur 851A integrated amp
Eversolo DMP-A6 streamer (Also in the photo is a rasp pi streamer in a walnut enclosure i made)
Topping D70 DAC
Thorens TD-124 + SME 3009 + Shure V15 Type IV
EAR 834P phono stage
KLH Model 5 speakers
REL T5i subs
quite the flikr photo stream.
I can’t think (for now) of a way to improve on this. The Roon pathway is Network Acoustics Tempus switch and Muon ethernet filter - Antipodes K41 Roon core and server - Weiss Helios DAC - Linear Tube Audio Z40+ integrated amp (all Ray tubes) - YG Tor speakers + REL T9 sub. There’s a turntable and CD transport too. I wonder about replacing the Antipodes with a Grimm though, if anyone has a view on that.
What a lovely and tidy system, however there’s always room for improvement, the question is can one afford it? ![]()
I’d try moving the speakers into the room; all the reviews say they need to be 1m+ in from the ‘front’ (ie behind them) wall to make them image properly. Big impact and free
Darko recently did a good YT on his hierarchy for stereo - his priority is room treatment then speaker position
I’d also go for a second sub; smooths out the bass and improves the soundstage
Thanks Andrew. In an ideal room that would be right, but I have no space for a second sub. Fortunately the YG are not rear ported, which was one reason for choosing them given the space constraints. The Helios has room correction and I was taming the bass nodes, but the remarkable effect of Stack Audio’s sub footers, which have cleaned up the entire frequency range, has made that unnecessary, and it’s only high treble which i modify. The sound btw is vastly superior to the full Naim set I had with big speakers in a Chicago loft, where I was able to follow the usual advice. You never know until you try stuff…
My music bedroom setup…
VTL I-85 integrated with NOS tubes
Chord Qutest FPGA DAC with LHS linear power supply
RoPieee Raspberry pi-4 Roon bridge with LHS linear supply
DynaAudio Contour 1.8 MkII floor standing speakers
Alpha Core Goertz MI 2 Veracity Speaker Cable
Chord ClearwayX ARAY RCA interconnects
Beyerdynamic DT-900 Pro X headphones
Music on the Go on Roon ARC…
Put a magnetic ring on Mojo it will attach on iPhone making more easy to carry around.
Darko’s assessment is accurate. I’ve been into home audio/video for over 40 years (time flies) and still enjoy the journey.
For most people, professionally treating a room isn’t practical. In my case, I rely on what’s already there—carpeting, soft sofas, and furnishings—with no dedicated wall or ceiling treatments.
The biggest improvement came from full Dirac digital room correction. I spent considerable time taking multiple measurements, and the results were transformative.
The second major upgrade was moving to active speakers with built-in DSP and true full-range performance (14 Hz–27 kHz), eliminating the need for subwoofers. No more dialing in crossovers, finding placement for one or two subs, or worrying about amp/speaker matching.
I know this approach isn’t for everyone. I’ve enjoyed building multi-component analogue and digital systems with passive speakers over the years—cassette decks, reel-to-reel, phono, 2-channel stereo, and multi-channel home theater.
My current system, which is now around 5-6 years old, is an all-digital 2.2 channel setup with a pair of Devialet Phantom speakers. Each reaches down to 14 Hz and blends seamlessly with the mids and highs, with amplification perfectly matched to the drivers. The signal runs through a pre-amp with Dirac and a USB re-clocker before being sent hard wired to the Phantoms via toslink and ethernet.
Today, several manufacturers offer active speakers with built-in Dirac, integrated streaming services, and Roon Ready support.
Anyway, I always enjoy seeing everyone’s systems and reading the comments.
Cheers. Enjoy the music!
I like the simplicity and elegance of your setup. BTW I wasn’t entirely serious in talking of possible upgrade to streamer. The Weiss DAC converts everything to PCM 195.312 (!) and I have found that upsampling in Roon makes zero audible difference. My only unexpected finding is that Roon sounds significantly better than JPlay - piano fuller, more realistic. My expectation based on others’ comments was the reverse, or that there might be no difference.
I’m a bit confused: full range active speakers with no subwoofer and yet you state that you have a “2.2 channel setup”, so what does the .2 refer to?
There are subwoofers in each Phantom. Actually there are two in each. But suffice it to say the low end is real. I couldn’t believe what I hearing the first time I heard them.
