Ubiquiti networking with Synology NAS connected by Ethernet
I have a very large library. Searches take very long, whether by iPhone or by Mac. The devices from which I am conducting the searches are connecting wirelessly, though my NUC, running ROCK, is wired by Ethernet to a Ubiquiti router. Roon had said that an update should fix the slow searches, but that was several months ago, and everything still runs extremely slowly. The slow searches persist despite my upgrading to the 11TNHi7 NUC, the most powerful one then recommended on Roon’s website.
Is there any way to speed things up? Searches can take 30 seconds or much more.
Can you be more specific with your network setup? Is your NAS connected to your primary router?
From your account, I see ~200k total tracks, with only ~180k tracks being properly recognized in Roon, which would mean Roon is attempting to identify around 20k tracks.
Can you describe your watched folder setup and what your local library folder directory typically looks like?
With that, I’m also seeing ~ 20k tracks from Qobuz, if you temporarily logout of Qobuz in Roon, do you see any change in performance?
Before making any edits or changes, please make sure you have a freshly saved backup of your current database.
Hi. My Synology NAS connects by Ethernet to a Ubiquiti switch, which connects by Ethernet to a main Ubiquiti switch, which connects by Ethernet to a Ubiquiti UDMPRO (Dream Machine Pro).
My watched folder resides on the NAS under a Music directory.
I have tried logging out of Qobuz, but the searches remain slow.
HI @Andrew_Stein,
I think the next step here is to enable some diagnostics on your account so our technical staff can get some more insight into what’s going on here.
However, before I enable this feature, I’d like to ask for your help ensuring we gather the right information.
First, can you please reproduce the issue once more and note the time at which the error occurs. Then respond here with that time, and I’ll make sure we review the diagnostics related to that timestamp.
Hi. It’s funny, but I just tried searches from 1:39 to 1:42 PST, and Roon loaded the artists quickly. It took a bit longer to populate the albums, but, overall, the searches ran in a tiny fraction of the usual time. I will try to trigger the issue later.
Could having disabled Qobuz have led to the faster searches? When I first did it–days ago–the searches remained slow. Could it take a few days for Roon to purge any ill effect from Roon?
I have always found intermittent performance of search indicates a problem with Roons db servers and they get under heavy load and this accounts for the variable nature of returns. One minute it will work fine the next not. It doesn’t always affect all users as it’s very time and load sensitive and sometimes regional. If it’s continuing and others start to see similar behaviour then this is likely cause. I am not currently seeing any issues myself but this means nothing to your scenario. In all times I have experienced this it has been Roons end not mine, however this usually does not affect just Qobuz though it’s across the board.
Thank you for the input. I rarely play Qobuz through Roon, but, in the above chain, Roon support reported that I had some 20,000 Qobuz tracks recognized by Roon. At support’s suggestion, I logged out of Qobuz within Roon, but that move didn’t speed things up.
I have no idea how 20,000 Roon ended up finding 20,000 Qobuz tracks. I doubt I have bookmarked more than a few hundred. Could the finding of 20,000 potentially non-bookmarked tracks have glutted Roon’s ability to search the database?
I have been logged out of Qobuz within Roon for some time now. While yesterday searches ran pretty fast, this evening (around 8:58 p.m. PST, in case Roon is listening) they ran quite slow. At that time, I searched for Jack White, and the iOS app reported, “Can’t connect to Roon Search,” but eventually populated his albums.
Incidentally, on his new album (No Name), Arc stutters and stops on the track “Tonight (Was a Long Time Ago),” though it plays fine with QuickTime.
If you have any favourites in the Qobuz app then they will be automatically added to Roon when you link you account, that’s all part of the integration.
If Ben mentions tracks, he is referring to tracks added to your library. If you don’t think that you have added that many, I would turn on Qobuz and then under albums, select only the Qobuz albums to see what they are; that might give a clue.
Things were considerably faster, but last night the searches began to crawl again. I don’t know whether you can pinpoint the search, but it took place 8/22/2024 at 6:29 p.m. PST. I made it from your iOS app. At first, after a long stall, it said, “Can’t connect to Roon Search.” Then, it became stuck for a while on the “Loading artist…” screen. I would say the whole search process took at least a minute.
Thank you. Of course, now things are moving swimmingly. I will keep searching with iOS over the next week or so and upload the logs when I encounter a problem.
Hi. I just uploaded the logs. Most of the time, Roon was finding albums, songs, and artists fast, but I experienced problems yesterday (9/1/2024) at 10:24 a.m., 10:26 a.m., 10:41 a.m., 10:56 a.m., and 11:01 a.m., PST. Thanks.
