Stand Alone Streamers To Consider

Hi Fellow Rooners,

I’m in the planning stages of my next (and final) hifi and look like I will be settling on B&W 804 or 803d4 along with a Michi pre/power combo.

Michi is not roon ready (tested only :frowning: ) so I’m looking at a streamer to feed into it that is roon ready.

I have a shopping list of features I’m after:

  • High end DAC (of course…)
  • HDMI ARC input (Michi doesn’t have HDMI)
  • Full Screen display
  • Full width cabinet (preferred)

Eversolo fits the bill but want to know if there are other options?
Volumio Primo also apart from the display and width.

Lumin doesn’t have HDMI
ifi neo stream has an HDMI socket but not for HDMI…
Cambridge Audio CXN v2 no HDMI…

Any thoughts would be appreciated - not an imminent purchase so noise about incoming NPD would be great too.

IIRC Lumin P1 has HDMI input/ARC, but not a fancy colour display. But I’ll bet it sounds fantastic (I have a T2)

HiFi Rose? Depending on the model should fit all hour requirements. If you can deal with a smaller screen, Eversolo.

Yes, seen that, but it’s worth more than the Michi Pre/Power so perhaps a bit of overkill…

Thanks, just looked, the HDMI is only an output not an ARC input which is what I want.

Maybe, but you’re going to buy $30k (Canadian) worth of speakers, so I’d say it’s right in the price zone for a very nice setup like that. My T2 was almost the same price as my Hegel H390 and I’ve never regretted the spend for a nanosecond.

Hi Boris, I know that he’s pretty much set on Rotel but what would you think about the NAD M66 ? I’d pair it with a M23 amplifier of course.
You over any PTSD with NAD?

I’ve got an M33 now running BDW 703s2 and considering an M23 (previously trialled the M22 on a run out special).
I find the combination with B&W a bit clinical hence looking at Class AB for a bit more warmer sound.

Fair point, I’ve got an inside man I get B&W and Rotel at something close to cost for so price not quite that high and frankly the only reason I’m considering 803s!

Ok that’s great, I run a M33 with B&W 805D , Best system I’ve ever had and been really happy with it!
Best luck with your new system, the Michi stuff is real sexy for sure. I’ve got the Eversolo dmp6 thing also and it’s good but I don’t think it’s on par with what you’re putting together, just my opinion.

A good dealer will give you a 30/60/day trial.

As a die hard Linn user I would recommend their available product lines. They match at your requirements. They offer plenty of different choices.

Klimax DSM
Select DSM
Majik DSM

The choice depends on your budget.

I would look at Matrix Audio as well. Perhaps the Element X2.

In case you missed this:

HDMI ARC: Support up to stereo PCM 192KHz 24Bit

Edit: Roon-Ready certification is under way

If you just need to be able to connect it to TV’s ARC, I would just use an HDMI audio extractor and plug its output into Rose’s digital in. At least that way you are getting the largest front screen, and while Rose’s own software may be hit and miss, it works perfectly with Roon.

I use one to feed HDMI into an old receiver that predate HDMI’s existence, and it works quite well.

I think the new Eversolo would work quite well, too, once they get Roon certified, but the screen is smaller.

M66 is probably quite fine, Dirac built-in is neat. The only issue considering OP’s request is that the screen isn’t really full-size. And IMHO it is a bit overpriced for what it does.

I don’t have any NAD devices left, but two PowerNodes and two Flexes that I keep have been working very well so far…

Quite honestly I would have just used Rose 520 here quite liking mine), but since OP has a perfectly fine power amp already it would be a waste…

Musical amps : you have the Cambridge Edge A, which is very musical, close to a class A, or the Denon PMA 110 that I have, which is musical but has a neutral profile like your Nad or the Rotel Michi that was mentioned. I use mine with DMP A6 and Gustard R26 as DAC. The Cambridge is very good, it has a defect, radiator, gives off a lot of heat.

Thanks Tom, looks like none of them are roon ready, only tested which Michi is as well

You would need the Edge NQ Streamer/ Pre Amp too , that’s looking megabucks

The Edge A is more interesting in terms of price than the separate preamp-streamer-power amp solution, even though Cambridge has increased its price over the last two years, and it has an ESS-based DAC that’s not bad. With BW, Rotel or the Denon PMA 110 in AB is a very good match, even if Denon is very close to the NAD Purifi in terms of rendering, but with less bass power.

A simple and efficient solution could be the Musical Fidelity MX-Streamer.Maybe you can have a look to it.

Have a look at Antipodes.
They’re right there, in your backyard.
Assuming of course you’re from the land of the long, white cloud.
