The Evolution Of My Listening Room

Just a guess in the dark. Was the Ropiee fully up to date? I know they will lose connection while doing the updates. Is there anything on the network that could cause an ip conflict?

EDIT: In case anyone is wondering, I think I have spent $3500 to create this listening room. Well worth every penny IMHO. That includes the Meridian Prime and RPi4 I already had.

It looks so inviting and relaxing. :relieved:

These are GIK Acoustics 24" X 48" X 2" panels. I went with 2" panels instead of 4" because the ceiling is only 8 feet in this upstairs bedroom and the space above the panels is 4 inches.

Lucy: “Dad and I really like these new ceiling panels.”

EDIT: I think the ceiling panels may be the best SQ improvement I’ve done.

I am somewhat amazed at how much the SQ improved with these ceiling panels. It’s like there is no crosstalk if that is a thing in music audio. No bass boom and sound stage is more distinct and clear from left, right, and center. Either that or these things are a gigantic placebo pill, but I don’t think so.

I decided to put the light fixture back up. I just “swagged” it over to the center of my listening space.

Maybe enough light from your Lava Lamp without it ? :smiling_imp:

Just had an hour long power outage. My two battery backup/surge protectors gave me ample time to shut down everything in an orderly fashion. Power came back on and all is good.

I recommend everyone use one of these, especially for your Roon Nucleus.

All done. Nothing to do now but listen to great sounding music. Every angle…

Looks great but I don’t believe you.

If that’s actually true, then I believe congratulations are in order Jim.
You have been going at this for some time :+1:

I like how you made the various room-treatment devices pretty unobtrusive.

From my own experience… Some projects are never finished :face_holding_back_tears:

Since I think I’ve finished my listening room, I added up what I’ve spent, in round numbers (US$).

Denon AVR-2805 - free from neighbor (this started it all)
Meridian Prime Headphone Amplifier - $500 purchased previously for headphone setup
Meridian Prime Power Supply - $500 purchased previously for headphone setup
Raspberry Pi 4 - $100 purchased previously for headphone setup
Raspberry Pi screen, DIY enclosure, GIK facing - $100
Pioneer HPM-60 speakers - $650
DIY bass traps - $300
7 GIK panels - $800
Wooden desk chair (Elvis) - $90
Footstool - $100
Stainless steel legs for listening chair - $100
Lava lamp (Layla) - $30
White rabbit (Grace) - $50
His Master’s Voice (Nipper) - $50
Posters and frames - $200
Overhead light fixture - $20
Rolling Stone book - $20
DIY speaker stands - free
100 year old horn and DIY stand - free
APC battery backup - $90

Total $3700. Money well spend, even for a minimalist. $1100 items I already had plus $2600 incremental spending. Of course, this doesn’t include my Roon server devices I already had that support the listening room and other end-points or my Roon client devices I already had.

Not a bad cost and it’s given you a few years of enjoyment as well.

It‘s what you get when listening to the setup?

Looks like a great space and it has been interesting to read about the minimalist transition. Nicely done. I don’t have that skill set and/or self control.

We don’t have a private space for my musical pursuits, those spaces are called guest rooms here for when the family B&B is open for company.

The entertainment space with the surround system is for one and all. I can listen to music from any room in the house but the best place is often occupied. My wife’s daughter likes to stop by during the day so they can watch scary movies. And the grand kids seem to own that entertainment space when the family visit. I get it late at night for a few hours after bedtime.

Who gets the chair when your wife wants to join you?

Nice setup Jim.

Thanks Mike. I followed your build also.

My wife hates my music and hates the room. She would rather watch animals on TV or do jigsaw puzzles. That works for me.

EDIT: We still have two spare bedrooms for when my son and his family visit from Denver. This was the fourth bedroom I was using for an office, which I don’t need. We actually need a smaller house although this one is only around 2000 sq feet.

We just had a huge hail storm with lights flickering on and off multiple times. TV’s were off for a couple minutes. No problems with Roon because I have two battery backup surge protectors. Please get one if you have a Nucleus. They seem to be prone to failure for some reason.

Roswell? You sure that flickering isn’t caused by aliens?

Here in the Netherlands power doesn’t go out with a normal hail storm. It has to be a direct lightning strike somewhere to knock out power. As only the major power lines run above ground. All the local ones are below. You don’t see above ground power lines running next to the streets here.

Our power lines are below ground also. It was lots of lightening and hail. This is Roswell Georgia not New Mexico. No aliens here.
