I am trying to use tailscale and have loaded the app onto jmy phone but I cant see how to link it to my Nucleus Plus (First Generation) The instructions say to activate Tailscale in the roon web administration but I cant see it there?
Describe your network setup
I am running Roon on a Nucleus Plus first generation and have a windows 10 machine and various Ipads I uses as an interface to access my music on a Linn Klimax system. All Wired Cat5/6 I use Arc on my phone bt recently changed to a Peplink dual router to run both BT Broadband (Open reach) and Skylink. The port 43105 is fixed on the router but am now getting ARC was unable to securely connect. I have read this could be because of the dual router trafic. So I want to adopt the VPN Tailscale option to get ARC working again.
The Nucleus Plus (and the Nucleus) do not support the use of Tailscale directly at this time because they use the BIOS boot mechanism which restricts the version of RoonOS to build 259 or prior. Build 271 is required to run Tailscale on the Nucleus. This build requires UEFI boot which is the mechanism employed by the Nucleus One and the Nucleus Titan.
Instead, you would have to install Tailscale on a separate computer (Raspberry Pi or equivalent is adequate) and configure it as a subnet router. See:
@Wade_Oram is correct here, Tailscale is not supported on early Nucleus versions, unfortunately. It is only avaliable on Nucleus One, Nucleus Titan, and ROCK servers. To read more about Tailscale on the supported devices, you can see our guide below:
To install Tailscale on a Windows or Mac PC, please refer to the below guides:
Referring to @Wade_Oram’s comment above about setting up another device for subnet routing to the Tailnet.
You’re basically setting up another device in this ecosystem to route local network traffic to Tailscale. This will allow the Nucleus+ to join the Tailnet (and reach ARC) without having Tailscale installed directly.
