· The Nucleus boots up and I can connect to it in the Roon app without issue, but I have a question about configuration/storage/attached devices

Describe the issue

I just changed to a new computer; computer tech transferred data/programs from old computer to new one. Yesterday, I was unable to run Roon software. Windows file manager does not find the Nucleus+ or the attached hard drive. I've checked to make sure network device discovery is turned on in Windows. Tonight, I updated Roon OS. Now, I can use Roon software to pick and play music, so I know the Nucleus+ is active and online--but under File Manager, I still cannot find Nucleus+ or the hard drive connected to it, which makes it impossible to add more music. What do I need to do?

You’re probably running Windows 11 24H2. Search the forum for the aforementioned OS. You’ll be able to find a workaround for your issue.

There is a long thread

ROCK not showing on Windows 11

There isva workaround in there, Roon are “working on it”

The recent update changed SMB security

The issue around Windows 11 24H2 are about the inability to access anonymous shares (of which the Nucleus share is one). That, as pointed out above can be resolved.

However, there is another, much older, issue which is more difficult. That is that the Nucleus often does not show up in the network neighborhood and so you can’t navigate to the Nucleus share by simply selecting and opening the device (as you can do with other Windows Computers, for example). The workaround for this is to directly enter the Nucleus host in the windows file explorer address bar (not the search bar) like “\\nucleusplus\Data”. This is not a Roon issue. It also occurs with other non-windows computers.

Unfortunately, there does not appear to be a reliable fix for this apparent device invisibility in Windows 10 or 11. The solution adopted by many, myself included, is to map a drive to the Nucleus share or a subdirectory thereof so that is shows up in ‘This PC’ as a drive.

For those of us who are not as knowledgeable about IT, and suffer from this “device invisibility in Windows 10 or 11” could some sort of idiots guide to how to “map a drive”. The reason for my interest is that when we returned from holiday last Friday, I found that my Windows 11 PC had done an update and my Innuos Server has now disappeared from the network, and I can not seem to be able to find it! It seems that I have fallen victim to this Windows Security update☹️.

I have already posted a guide for a ROCK user at:

It should work exactly the same for your Nucleus Plus except that the hostname is ‘nucleusplus’ instead of ‘rock’. (Also note that that post has a mistake where I used ‘\rock\Data’ when it should have been ‘\\rock\Data’.

For other devices, the procedure is similar but you will need to know the hostname by which the device is identified on the network.

@Wade_Oram, thanks very much. I will have a look at that and see if it helps🤞.

Note that if you have Windows 11 24H2, then you will need to solve the guest access issue first.

Then, and only then, will you be able to successfully map a drive using login ‘guest’ and password ‘guest’ (note: all lower case) if prompted.

The Microsoft techical article link below indicates how. Steps 1 to 5 do not apply because you cannot change the security settings of the SMB share exported by the nucleus so you have to start at step 6 on your Windows Computer:

Hi @Michael_Cohen,

Good to see you on the community again! As @Wade_Oram has mentioned (thanks, Wade!) this is a bit of a complicated issue as it isn’t directly within Roon’s wheelhouse.

That said, I wanted to check in and see if you’ve been able to successfully connect given the helpful steps shared above?

We’ll be on standby for your results, and if you have any additional questions along the way. :+1:

Thanks for checking, Benjamin.
Sad to report, but after almost 2 hours, I still can’t find the Nucleus+ through File Manager (though the Roon software still accesses the database).
I followed Wade’s advice regarding SMB access; I got nowhere, restored the default settings, tried again, and still nothing.
I tried mapping the Nucleus+ drive; of course, it didn’t come up as an option and when I tried to map an R: drive with a \nucleusplus\storage file location (I used a double slash before nucleusplus), I kept getting asked for Windows Credentials. I don’t remember ever setting this up, but every username and password I could think of weren’t accepted.
I appreciate the help I’ve received, but I’m still at square one–totally lost.

The drive mapping \\nucleusplus\storage is wrong.

It should be: \\nucleusplus\Data\Storage.

When asked for credentials you should use “guest’” (all lower case, no quote marks) for both login I’d and password.

If you still can’t access the drive, then it is likely that Windows 11 24H2 security is still getting in the way and you should revisit the Microsoft article linked earlier.

Sorry my reply above may be misleading , the fix as outlined in the MS link that @Wade_Oram has shown , is a workaround at best .It does not restore the pre updated look and feel of ROCK

It does however allow you to create at will a share to ROCK, it still needs a full Roon solution to the login issue.

I use Windows 10 which is where this screenshot comes from, my issue came from a new laptop, which I don’t routinely use for Roon
