Vintage Mechanical Playback systems

[Moderator Edit: Split out to it oun topic.]

Why wait? Start one now! I’m sure there are enough people who are tired of wandering through the flat, bendable music world. Cylinders have volume and heft and are much nicer to hold.

Gillian Welch re-releasing on reel to reel. I think it’s the way forward.

With entry level reel to reel players starting around $10K and going way up, and albums $500 a pop, it will be the way forward for a very exclusive crowd. Difficult to see reel to reel making even a small dent in the vinyl market which appeals equally to persnickety audiophiles and common folks for both sonics and economics.

“Common” as a measure of financial ability, not who’s better or worse.

Reel to reel is extremely expensive. Factually, the wealthy can better afford it than the vast majority of music enthusiasts who have less means. And for that reason, reel to reel has little chance of ever being more than a niche within a niche.

Vinyl is vastly more affordable, and for that reason, shall remain the dominant analog format.

On the bright side, reel to reel will continue to outpace the Edison Cylinder in market share

I do not have the Edison Cylinder, but I do have a Regina disc player, with thirty discs. Believe it or not, there must have been a format war back in the 1800s/1900s because I have two different diameter discs, and I can only play one diameter disc because of the mechanics of it all

Wow, amazing!

What type of music do you have that plays on it? What was hot in the late 1800’s?

That’s really cool! I thought those were obsolete

Might be prudent to start looking for a high quality dedicated 78 RPM player. Maybe something that looks good as furniture.

Is it Roon Ready

My 8 track isn’t. That’s for sure

Damn 8 track was the format I skipped, even had brief flurry with Betamax :sunglasses:

8 tracks are from far before my time. I’ve never owned one myself.

It was meant as sarcasm

I had a small portable cassette player , loose in my first car. To old to have one built in

Yes I am VERY OLD :joy:

I had an 8 track very briefly as a young kid. My only recording was the Star Wars soundtrack.

I do wish, however unlikely it might be, that they’d come up with a high quality, more affordable version of reel to reel.

My newest component. I’m working to install a raspberry pi with an ADC hat so I can interface it with the KEFs. Then I can get rid of that ugly bell. I’m glad that Ms. Welch decided to reissue some stuff on blue shellac!

@Douglas_Braddock wow, utterly fantastic! I was only joking when I mentioned the Edison Cylinder, wonderful see it’s actually a current thing.

What sort of music is available for playback? My imagination says there’s only 8 different versions of Greensleeves :joy:

I peruse the thrift stores for albums and I cannot believe how many 78s I come across. The majority of them come from Palm Beach, Florida mansions.

Part of my little shop of horrors, love gear that everyone else mostly thinks should have been thrown away.
The bakelite 78rpm only player does work and is connected to the aux in of the bakelite valve radio also fully functioning.
Now it’s not exactly hifi, or even lofi but it amuses me.
Quite a few more items on other shelfs that entertain me as well…
The owl is a radio too, it’s eyes are volume and tuning…lol.

You need the ceramic dog Nipper staring at the bell :+1:
