What causes a track to get "stuck" at the end?

@support
Occasionally at the end of a track, Roon will not advance to the next track. The queue screen shows the three little moving bars next to the track as though it was ended; there are other tracks queued up; but it stays there forever. To resume I have to press skip forwards.

I’ve seen this on both Tidal and Qobuz; on a MacOS server (v.1.5) and now on my new ROCK system (v1.6). Both MacOS and iPad control point. I’m playing to Linn Klimax DS – I’ve not watched carefully enough to see if the same happens with our non-Linn players. System is wired Ethernet, very fast internet connection.

Hello @anonymouse,

It seems like you may have a networking issue somewhere. Does your setup meet our Networking Best Practices Guide? What is the model/manufacturer of your Router, switches, range extenders, powerline adapters, ect? In the past we have isolated issues to router settings such as IGMP Proxying or multicast traffic not being allowed to properly pass through. I would start the search in that direction.

Thanks,
Noris

@noris As far as I can see, we meet the requirements. We are running Ubiquiti equipment here - Unifi managed switch, EdgeRouter - no range extenders, power line etc. Cable connection with 382 Mb/s currently. All the Roon equipment and players are on the same subnet (wish Roon worked across subnets but that’s another topic!). We have never had any issues with Linn’s protocols or streaming - it just seems to be when playing from Roon. I believe IGMP snooping is off so will try turning it on. Our router has some IGMP proxies set up, to relay from the main LAN to a couple of subnets.

It just happened again. I can now see that pressing pause/play has no effect (other than to change the button icon). To move forward I needed to use track skip.

I also tried the Linn control point (Kazoo) while the track was stuck - it shows the track and cover art at the bottom of the window, but has no pause button; and above that it says “Failed to load content…”.

Could this be an issue between Roon and Linn? anyone else seen this on non-Linn endpoints?

Occasionly I get the same error on my NAD / BlueSound System. Never happened with 1.5, happened twice on 1.6.

Hi @anonymouse,

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you here.

You mentioned that you are making use of some IGMP proxies on your Router, I wonder if that could cause some of the issues you’re seeing, if you can turn them off as a temporary test that might be helpful here. Is your Linn up to date on firmware? It would be good to know if this behavior also happens on non-Linn endpoints.

Thanks,
Noris

Hello anonymouse,
+1 but up to now just at the last track of playlist

see Roon Radio stops playing

G56

@noris - Today I am seeing the issue reported by @G56, where the last track is stuck when it should be advancing into Roon Radio.

Both G56 and I have Linn equipment. I have (so far anyway) not seen this problem on our Lumin player in another room, only on my Linn Klimax/Exakt system.

edit: I upgraded my Linn equipment to a slightly more recent version (4.68.267) and the problem has not (yet?) recurred. Don’t know whether this is due to the software upgrade or just to rebooting things.

I have occasionally had the same issue. (Last track is stuck when it should be advancing into Roon Radio) I am using a Lumin T-1 Streamer and have a Roon Nucleus.

Hi @anonymouse,

Thanks for your report. I have spoken to QA regarding this issue and they are aware and investigating. I have added your report to the investigation and once QA is able to reproduce this issue consistently, we will submit a bug report to the devs. I will be sure to let you know if I need any more info for the investigation but for the time being I think we have everything we need.

Thanks,
Noris

Wrong post

@support
Just to advise that this problem (getting stuck while playing) has occurred again today, so the latest Linn upgrade did NOT fix it.

While it was stuck, I looked on Linn Kazoo (their own software to control the Linn player). Instead of the track details it just showed “Roon”, so something has got screwed up. There was no play/pause button. When I skipped to the next track (using the Roon app) the Kazoo window correctly showed art, track details, and pause button again.

Hello @anonymouse,

Thanks to letting me know that additional information and that the Linn update did not resolve this issue. QA is still looking into the possible root cause(s) but I have added your notes to the investigation in case it helps. As soon as I have any additional information to share I’ll be sure to let you and @G56 know.

Hello @anonymouse,

I spoke to QA regarding this issue again today and we would like to gather some more information here, can you please provide the following?

  • Can you manually send us your ROCK Logs? You can use these instructions to find and retrieve your ROCK logs

  • Do you recall what track title and track sample rate Roon got stuck on when you reported this?

  • Do you have any DSP active on your Linn zone?

  • Can you please provide a screenshot of your Signal Path when this issue occurs next time? You can use these instructions to upload screenshots to Community.

  • Have you ever seen this behavior on non-Linn endpoints? You mentioned that you have not seen this on Lumin, is that still the case?

Thanks,
Noris

OK. In today’s case it stopped just before playing Roon Radio (although I have also seen it stop when working through a playlist). Pressing skip track caused radio to start correctly.

Signal path, and tracks, are shown on screenshot as requested.

Roon does not have any DSP set up for this zone.

I have not yet encountered this on our Lumin zone, but it has happened a few times a day on the main Linn system.

I will get you logs as requested.

Hello @anonymouse,

Thank you for providing that info, I can confirm that the logs have been downloaded and have been submitted to QA for analysis, you can go ahead and remove them from your server. As soon as I hear back from QA regarding your case I will be sure to let you know.

Thanks,
Noris

Hello @Anonymouse,

I appreciate your patience while I discussed this issue with the QA team. Unfortunately, the current diagnostics information we gathered is not sufficient to come to a conclusion on what causes this issue, so have we have gone ahead and enabled some extra debugging tools for your account in hopes of discovering new data.

Can I please ask you to reproduce this issue once more with the additional debugging turned on and let me know the exact local time of when it occurs next and re-submit the logs? I am hopeful that these extra debugging tools will provide some more in-depth information and as soon as we have this I can submit the logs again for QA analysis.

Thanks,
Noris

Logs sent – see private message.

I have replicated this when playing from Roon to Linn Klimax DS:

  • once it stuck at the end of a CD before advancing to Roon Radio
  • a few tracks later, it stuck at the end of a Roon Radio track before advancing to the next.

In both cases the Roon app seems to think it is still playing. Pause/Play leave it in the same state; Skip Forward causes it to get on with Roon Radio’s next track.

Hi @Anonymouse,

Thanks for sending those log files over, I can confirm that they have been retrieved and I have uploaded them to QA for analysis. As soon as I hear back, I’ll be sure to let you know, you can go ahead and remove the two examples from your server.

Thanks,
Noris

Hi @Anonymouse,

I had a discussion with the dev team today regarding your case and they would like to see if we can reproduce this behavior in the lab. To make sure that we have the same conditions here, would you mind sending us the file that you were last playing? It appears that this file was:
Danse païnne, for 2 pianos, Op. 158 - Anne Sofie von Otter.

Thanks,
Noris
