This is another remarkable recording of Couperin’s harpsichord pieces. It was made in 2003 and released in 2004 on Zig-Zag Territoires. Alpha re-released it in 2019 with a new cover design, but with the same outstanding sound quality.
Blandine Rannou in 2003 was little known, but her elegant playing of Couperin has been very favorably received and reviewed. She plays a modern harpsichord, made by Anthony Sidey in 1985 as copy of a 1636 Ruckers harpsichord that had been modified in 1763 by Henry Hemsch in Paris. This instrument’s timbre and fullness of sound is very much surprising. Comparing this instrument to Frédéric Haas’ original Hemsch harpsichord makes for an interesting listening exercise.
