Doesn’t sound miss-spent to me! ![]()
I have a Michell ORBE, purchased in 2000, so it has the AC Motor and QC Controller. After 2000/2001 Michell had to move to a DC Motor and different controllers. I have considered the change but there is no upgrade of the motor, housing or controller - you have to buy new.
I have a SME V tone arm, but have also used a Mission 774 (the straight detachable low mass version).
The Tonearm cable is a custom made Harmonic Technologies pure Silver cable with SME 5-pin and Furutech RCA connectors.
Cartridge is a Lyra Skala and I have an old, well used Helikon, as well.
Phono stage is a Bakoon EQA-11R, being a current amplifying battery powered unit with the Reference components. The output of the phono stage is through Harmonic Technologies Magic II RCA cables.
One of the differences of the ORBE over the Gydrodec, outside platters and clamp is the double plinth, but I also have a rectangular ISObase on thicker acrylic, so there is quite a bit of acrylic. The rectangular ISObase is almost unique being just one of 2, custom ordered by Michell Engineering - many thanks to Steve Rowland.
I have replaced the bearing ball with a Ceramic (Alumina Oxide) one, Silicon Nitride Ceramic were tried, but can micro-crack with the weight of the platter and the rotation. The Bearing balls in the top of the suspension posts with Delrin ones, as being a plastic compound give better isolation (they did sound differ to both the AluOx and the Si3N4 ones). Also the Springs for the Subplatter has been replaced with Ebony and Thread ones from SolidAir. I have tried the Rubber O-ring versions, but didn’t get on with them, as removed some of the speed and air.
I also have the Pedersens Armboard upgrade with the addition acrylic, rubber and PVC isolation.
This has been a 20-years of a 30-year ish analogue journey, with the 1st part with a Thorens TD160, which went through extensive modifications, tonearms, cartridges and phonostages.
I also have a Keith Monks RCM, a CR502 model, from the 70’s, restored, as thankfully it uses many of the same parts as the MkII at the time, which are now being manufactured again today. The CR502 was meant to the more domestic friendly model, being not as deep, with a compartment for the jars, which being smaller, limit the number of cleans in a session to just 10-20 records!
Not sure if it would work for you but I’ve just started using Yate which is the most comprehensive tagging software I’ve come across.
Looks interesting but it appears more suited to tagging music files rather than managing an LP database.
Rebuilt Oracle Delphi mk 1 with a few upgrades, SME 309 and Ortofon Cadenza Blue.
Awful picture but you get the idea:
Pre-amp is a Trichord Dino with Never Connected PSU.
I’m using it to assist in managing a database of thousands of albums. A mixture of recorded LP’s, 12", 7", CD’s and some downloaded music. I probably misunderstood your post and thought it was about tags though.
I have two of them (Technics Sl1210M5G, one of which has an ortofon 2m bronze in it instead of the usual 2m electro concords that I mostly used for DJing)
They are left over from my DJing days but I could never bring myself tom part with either the turntables nor many of the records (nor the pairs of CDJs and the mixer).
I still have most of my old DJ rig too, but one of the turntables now has a perfectly respectable hifi cartridge in it and spends most fok its time connected to my hifi amp instead of my old dj mixer and so and does get quite a bit of use just listening to albums. I do still switch in a dj cartridge now and then and just mix on them as well (kind of theraputic too - a bit like some people mess around on a piano to relax which I also do).
Could be the best use for vinyl ( he ducks from flying objects)
This is a TD 160, Lounge preamp running into the analog inputs of a Bluesound Node 2. But mostly, these days, I stream from rips, downloads, or Tidal.
Yep…Dynaflex… no doubt about it.
I’m proud owner of a Pro-Ject RPM 1 which I’ve customized; acrylic platter, red LED lights, marble base plate with mirror on top, selfmade counter/anti skating weights, better cabling, Ortofon Blue cartridge, red leather mat, dustcover & puck. The steel pillar in the front is to prevent the turntable to fall over when one of my cats would stand on it (which they never did till now)
Beautiful! And beautiful craftmanship. Very impressive.
It’s lovely to see so many people with beautiful turntables within their setups!
I love my Denon DP-400 turntable with an Audio Technica - VM740ML Dual MM Phono Cartridge. I run it through a Pro-Ject Phono Box DS2 USB phono preamp and have been digitizing a ton of new vinyl I’ve purchased using the Vinyl Studio program. And then those files import into Roon. Sounds significantly better than their standard “digital” version.

Michell Gyrodeck DC motor, Rega 300B arm, Nagaoka MP300. Using it almost every Sunday morning
I have an old VPI HW-19 and a thousand or so records. At least I think I do, as I’m way too lazy to listen to them. Thanks Roon? I’m certainly better off financially thanks to cutting back on expensive vinyl and listening to Roon almost exclusively.
Could we please get some additional information on this program? TIA!
It’s a really nice program that I run on my windows desktop. I record via the USB out from my phono preamp into my PC. It took me a little while to get the hang of the program. You basically record the whole album and then add track breaks when you’re finished. I also add all the album info while I’m recording. You set the record level at a certain amount - I like to keep it maxing out around 75% on the record level meter. Once you’re finished recording you can use the “normalize audio” tool to get the sound level just right. You can save files in all kinds of formats including DSD. I’d suggest trying out the free trial. I learned it all as I go but once you get the hang of it, you’ll be recording vinyl all day. Ha, the other day I recorded 11 albums!
I highly recommend vinyl studio and the support is great too. The guy always emailed back when I had questions.
