Description of Issue

Every few minutes my playing zone vanishes briefly and then re-establishes without any intervention from me. This means the music stops suddenly and then has to be restarted once the zone reappears.
Here is the log of the point at which this happened twice in about a minute:

If it’s a well known issue, is it being investigated with a view to coming up with a solution? I’m faced with using a system that is now unreliable and to be told that there’s no solution in sight doesn’t fill me with joy. It seems to me that whatever was done in the last update needs to be undone to get rid of it because up until that point, this problem didn’t exist! It is yet another example of Roon forcing updates that haven’t been fully tested onto users who then discover their formerly stable systems are now unstable. When are you guys going to learn that if it’s not broke, you don’t fix it and further that this insane obsession with constant changes is causing more problems than it solves! There should be the ability to refuse updates if they are not wanted or needed because the present situation, considering how much Roon cost, IS NOT ON!

Sorry you’re are having the trouble … my 861v6 drops of the net now again but I find a reboot of it (and sometimes the router) fixes the issue.

Not defending Roon, but the problem with the 218, and the ID40/ID41 800 cards, are that they uses the Sooloos protocol not RAAT. The Sooloos protocol is not as well developed as RAAT and as Meridian no longer support it, any improvement / bug fixing by Meridian is doubtful.

Personal I’d bite the bullet and switch to an alternative streamer that is Roon Ready which does support RAAT. If you wish stick with the Meridian brand then it’s just the Meridian 210 (maybe you could borrow one to trial it) outside of Meridian there are of course other RAAT endpoint options.

There is … Roon Setting → About and then click the cog wheel to configure each device …

As you should see, I have mine set to “Ask Before Downloading any updates” this way I control the timing of the process … to mitigate against update issues.

I also have a “spare” Roon Server installed on another machine just in case, so I can revert back a version if need.

I can’t solve the issue, but I hope this background helps your understanding and options.

I understand your position and empathize with your situation. The issue however is more complicated than un-doing one of our recent updates. This issue has popped up, specifically with the 218, over the last several years.

The Roon senior development team revisited this investigation earlier this month and has again reached the same conclusion: there seems to be no mechanism within Roon to cause the failures as described.

As it stands now, our Roon Partners team has passed the investigation to Meridian, and any fix is in their jurisdiction; there’s nothing we can fix in Roon.

If you experience a change in symptoms, or if you’re experiencing the issue more broadly with other zones, I will absolutely continue to troubleshoot and provide assistance wherever possible.

I was having problems just like that when I “updated” from my 10 year old Linksys router to a new highly recommended Asus router. Dumped the Asus for a new Netgear router and the problems disappeared.

I see what you’re saying but what I don’t understand is why the 218 only ever falls over in this way if it’s running Roon. If it’s carrying the sound from my turntable or TV it never misbehaves. Ever.
I have managed to find a firmware update for it so hopefully that’ll improve matters.

I think a clarification is required here…

The 218 is not Roon Ready so it doesn’t “run Roon” it’s network protocol is the now very dated Sooloos protocol, not RAAT.

The Sooloos protocol is way more sensitive to network issues than RAAT. Years ago I asked Meridian if they could update their devices to support RAAT I was told no due to hardware limitations of the devices. I also hoped, with bated breath, that Meridian would one day release an ID42 Roon Ready card but alas it was never to be.

Going back to Roon; for historical reasons Roon supports the Sooloos protocol (for which I’m grateful as I have a Meridian 861/ID40 combination) but Sooloos is and also will be network sensitive.

I know, from your other topic, you’re considering Roon alternatives, it’s your call of course, but none of those support the Sooloos or RAAT network protocols and hence would not be able to stream to the to 218 over Ethernet.

IMHO the instability and root cause of your frustration is the 218 (when used as a streamer) thus I’d suggest augmenting your system with a Roon Ready endpoint and then reevaluate how well Roon works with that.

As I suggested above the Meridian 210 would integrate well in your Meridian system but other options are available.

That does explain things if the 218 is using a network sensitive and outdated protocol.

I did manage to get a firmware update for it and it has now performed much better in the last few days. Admittedly the system hasn’t been on for long periods but when it has been playing the 218 has dropped not out at all unlike previously when it was happening every couple of minutes.

I may look into getting a 210 as a way of bolstering the setup.

Did the firmware update prove to be helpful in your case?

It does appear to have worked. The 218 has not been used for a particularly long period so far but when it has been in use for up to an hour, it hasn’t failed. Previously it fell over every few minutes.
