Albums are EXTREMELY slow to load

@Eric
Well, at least I have a part of the answer: I know now that the problem is not solved with the new build (build 203).
Still waiting for some kind of feedback on my problem…
Thierry

Hi Thierry
First off, I do NOT know what may be causing your problem here…but I think the Roon guys will be able to help once they’ve had a look at your logs…I know they’re busy right now after the recent v1.3 release

However, almost no matter what the outcome is, I think you planning to upgrade the QNAP Ram to at least 8Gb would be beneficial in the long run…especially with your description of the issue of loading disc sets

With your 22k track library [assume 2,000 albums approx??], then you may be right on the borderline…and in my many years involved with Tech products, more RAM can many times be the most cost effective means to gain extra perceived performance

As you know, your QNAP has two filled RAM slots ]2 by 2Gb]…so you will need 2 by 4Gb modules…or 2 by 8Gb should you decide to push on to 16Gb

But again, I don’t know that this is what is causing this issue…it’s more of a “good practice” for best future performance…you already have a decent processor…and your SSD will definitely be helping as well…and it’s possible that the 4Gb of RAM might be a bottleneck…either now or in the future

Hi Thierry
In your first post above, you mention a Dell Windows 10 laptop…is this the device on which you are seeing the slow loading performance??..and if so, I assume this laptop is on Wifi??

You also mention Tablets above…have you tried the Roon app on a tablet and was the slow loading also seen there??

Thanks Ronnie,
I have already sent my logs to the Roon team.
And I have ordered yesterday two RAM modules of 8Gb each.

The slow loading performance occurs with both my laptop and my Sony tablet (both on wifi).
As well as with my Windows 10 desktop computer (ethernet connection).

That’s a good move Thierry…no matter what the outcome of this issue actually is

And as you’ve already guessed, the 3 different device by 2 different network connection methods seems to very much point at the NAS and Roonserver interaction…or possibly a network issue

Beyond the Asus router mentioned above, do you have any “Smart” switches on your network…or are all Ethernet connections thru the Router itself?

Not sure to understand exactly what you mean by “smart switches” (I am not a specialist), but other network devices are installed in different rooms in order to have the best Wifi coverage as possible: one access point (Linksys WAP300N connected to the Asus router by Ethernet) and two dLAN Devolo adapters.

Is your NAS connected Directly to the Asus Router, with no other device in between [these are usually called switches]

If your Dell laptop has an Ethernet connection on it, could you bring the Dell to that router and connect the Dell to the router directly…and then use Roon to see if you have the same slow loading issues

It’s just that SOMETIMES Access points and devices like Devolo adaptors can cause network issues that can impact on Roon’s perceived performance…even when other apps and internet speed appear unaffected

When doing the above test, please can you disconnect the LinkSys and Devolo’s…so that the only things connected to the router are the NAS and the Dell laptop

Oh yes, ok, I see what a switch is. And yes, I have one (because I have many devices connected to my network). I don’t remember if the NAS is directly connected to the router or if it is connected via the switch. I’m at work at the moment, but I’ll check it as soon as I get home.

In any event, thank you for your help and suggestions!

You might post the manufacturer and part number of the switch when you get home…this may help with the overall diagnosis of this problem

Cheers

You just have to ask  : TP LINK TL-SG108

Thanks Thierry…given the price and quick look thru the specs, this looks like a standard “dumb” switch…which is actually what you want most of the time in a domestic situation…smart switches are more useful in commercial applications

I still think a NAS to Router to Dell laptop [with all other devices disconnected] test of Roon later will help with diagnosing this issue

I will do what you suggest and tell the outcome.
Thanks!

Sorry…for the sake of it, reboot the router as well before conducting the test…likely unnecessary, but worth doing as it’s a simple thing to do

Ok, I’ll connect the NAS directly to the router, disconnect all other network devices, reboot the router, and connect my laptop to the router via Ethernet. I’m curious to see if that changes something…

No promises…but it will help eliminate the network itself as a source of the issue assuming that the problem persists with the streamlined setup as a brief trial

Just an FYI. Another user had issues with this switch.

I would be tempted to swap it out (borrow something from a friend maybe just to test) and see if the issue resolves.

Nothing to lose by checking…

Thanks Nick, I have already replaced it. TPLINK has gone to a colleague who is not into either Roon or Meridian:)
Such a shame they do a switch which looks feels and is named just like Netgear, but so unreliable.

Great you got to the bottom of it. Just wonder if it is part of @Thierry_Meulemans’ issue.

Well, don’t know for the response of Dmitry. Be that as it may, this seems to confirm that I should consider replacing my TP-LINK switch as well…

Thierry, I would most certainly recommend doing it.
