Audio devices disappear on Roon Server and then re-appear [Roon Investigating]

Testing Build B. Again using my AIFF 24/96 of The Beatles “Love” DVD rip to test (as there is no track gaps - easier to hear stops/breaks while I’m working).
Track 1 (2:43) - audio stops at 2:11, timer stops at 2:13, pressed play and it continued to end
Track 2 (2:05) - played through without error
Track 3 (1:20) - played through without error
Track 4 (3:05) - audio stops at 1:22 and restarts a split second later, then it played though to the end
Track 5 (4:28) - audio stops at 0:11, restarts momentarily, then stops again at 0:21. Started it again but cuts at 0:29 before continuing. Cuts at 1:21 and skips to Track 6.
Track 6 (1:22) - …

I’m done, so Build A seems the most consistent although doesn’t like me messing about too much but still not really good enough. I’m going to have lunch and do some real work now, after reinstalling Build A!

OK, I finally found time to run the tests. All now completed and uploaded along with zipped logs, using the typeform.

For me:-
C was OK.
A was pausing and skipping or disappearing every few minutes as before.
B was OK.

All I did in all 3 cases was install them and play music. I did not attempt to mess with the database or add favourites or playlists so I cannot say for sure the problem never happens with C or B.

I will leave B installed for now.

Oh, I just realised that my displays, that were working fine on C, and on A, are not working on B.
Roon reports “no displays”.
It may just be a config issue. I’ll double-check it tomorrow.

Have not updated or reinstalled app since installing Build A from Wednesday’s testing.
05:27 Hit Reboot on Roon Nucleus One from my Google Chrome browser
05:28 Started Roon desktop app for Windows. Took a while with the Roon logo pulsing…
05:30 in.
Testing using The Beatles – Love (DVD rip, AIFF 96kHz 24bit)
Track 1 (2:43) – ran through without error
Track 2 (2:05) – ran through without error
Track 3 (1:20) – ran through without error
Track 4 (3:05) – ran through without error
Track 5 (4:28) – ran through without error
Going to play around now…
Uninstalled recently added album and reinstalled it. Happened very fast – excellent news!
Track 6 (1:22) – ran through without error while doing the above
Track 7 (1:54) - Using Edit album, changed an artwork to the Prefer Roon version but this stopped playback at 1:45, with the “Uh oh, something’s not right” message, then ‘Waiting for your Roon Server’ then back to ‘Uh oh’ message. Clicking around screen, it returned to the Edit Album menu so I cancelled out of Edit Album and returned back to Home. Album on playback had reset itself to Track 8. Let’s see if playback remains constant now without playing around for a few tracks.
Track 8 (0:54) – ran through without error
Track 9 (3:29) – ran through without error
Track 10 (3:22) – while playing this I changed the artwork on a different album to Prefer Roon and playback continued without error, navigated around artist and their discographies, etc., Daily Mixes, Playlists by Roon, etc.
Decided to try playing random tracks, starting and skipping tracks, moving the timer bar to different parts of the tracks, playing from Qobuz library also worked without cut outs up until playing one track which cut momentarily, restarted for a split second then stopped. Pressed play again and it ran to the end of the track without error.
Stopped and switched Roon and server off for a while as I had to take my wife to the station!
08:20 I’m back and attempting to run Roon app on phone via my Cambridge Audio streamer. Playing the new 44.1kHz 16bit CD rip of Saint Etienne’s ‘International.’ Playback initially stopped at the start of track 2. Restarted but loads of stoppage ‘waiting’ and ‘uh oh’ messages. The app was also casting via my Google dongle thing to my TV. When there was a break in playback the casting stopped and playback seemed to respond by playing better but not without stopping and when selecting to ‘display now’ it really didn’t like that, stopped playing (now back to the Beatles LP) track 1 and skipped to track 5 when then duly skipped to track 6!
Back on my Windows PC attempting the Saint Etienne playback again.
Track 1 (3:10) – At 1:55 audio blanked out but playback continued one second later. Went back to see if error repeated, it didn’t so no rip fault there, a glitch? Playback continued. At 3:07 playback stopped. Wound back to 3:03 and playback continued into track 2.
Track 2 (3:46) – stopped playback myself and decided to install the version (Roon for Windows) at the Download Roon - Mac, Windows, iOS & Android Apps | Free Download link you sent me as I was working with Wednesday’s Build A as previously stated above.
Started the Saint Etienne again.
Track 1 (3:10) – 1:55 playback stopped – ‘waiting for Roon server’ message, very quick to reestablish but no resumption of playback. Pressed play again, continued into track 2.
Track 2 (3:46) – 1:13 brief stop, jumped to 1:24, restarted and then stopped. Pressed play again. Brief glitch when I logged into my router admin on Google Chrome, ‘waiting for’ flashed up but playback then continued.
Track 3 (4:35) – at 2:38 skipped to track 4.
Track 4 (3:48) – played through without error. I did nothing else on my PC while this was happening.
Track 5 (3:20) – 0:33 while typing the above comment, brief glitch and playback continued. Hm. Is this to do with activity through the router? As if Roon drops when there’s lots happening? To try to replicate I refreshed email page went into websites, opened old files. No drop in playback.
Track 6 (3:52) – closed and reopened Chrome and the many pages I have pinned, playback fine. Ran SpeedTest, no drop in playback. Logged back into router, no glitch or drop in playback. Opened and closed YouTube app, playing a video, no drop in playback.
Track 7 (3:22) – 2:15 ‘waiting for’ message and stopped. Roon skipped to track 8.
Track 8 (4:49) – before restarting another ‘waiting’ and ‘lost connection’ from router – see image, then ‘uh oh’ message freezes on screen.

Track 8 resumed. At 2:16 I clicked into an email and playback stopped, started, then stopped again. I had been inactive on screen for the duration of this track, so wonder if a sort of steady ‘sleep’ type mode starts and when I do something it causes Roon to stop? Sounds a daft idea.
Restarted at 2:26. 2:34 ‘waiting’ again. Resumed at 2:45, stopped again. 3:03 resumed playback, would not start. Waiting 30s pressed play, playback resumed until 3:09, before stopping again.
Okay, I think that’s as much as I can do. Just to check, playing on the Qobuz app not a problem, so my internet connection not an issue.

WIFI EXTENDER? I turned off my wi-fi extender about 15 minutes ago and linked direct to the router, and all playback has been perfect. Could it be…?
Unless this is a coincidence and the Roon technicians have fixed it or it could possible be my wi-fi extender because I just played on Windows PC Roon app, Roon Arc on phone, and Roon app from phone through my Cambridge Audio streamer whilst casting with Google dongle to TV at the same time without issues!

11:29 just stopped for the first time after a good 2 hours of playback - blast!
11:54 another cut, just as I started downloading a newly added album into Arc.
11:57 Taking a good couple of minutes to re-establish itself now.

:waving_hand:t2: Hi everyone,

We appreciate so much your incredible support in testing our latest builds.

Thanks to your feedback, we believe to have found underlying cause. Our teams are now focusing all their attention on delivering a solution.

We’ll keep you posted as soon as we have more to share.

Glad you found a solution. Unfortunately, what this issue has shown me is that I cannot use Roon as the distribution system for music around my home. The fact that an upgrade can be taken, completely break music for the household, and there is no capacity available for me to get ahold of a last-known-good version of the server means that even if this solution were to work… I can never take another Roon update. I can’t utilize such a system. You could fix my problem just by holding onto the last 2-3 versions of the installer and allowing me to download one if necessary. Without that, regardless whether Roon engineering is able to fix this issue or not, we are becoming a Savant home. I’m sure that will come with its own problems. But we cannot use Roon in what is essentially a production environment.

Hi @Peetr,

Thank you for your responsiveness :folded_hands:

We do appreciate you voicing one of the major concerns that surfaced for you as we encountered the issue of audio devices disappearing and reappearing.

It is helpful to know what would make you feel confident in using Roon: a prior last-known-good version of Roon. I wish I could offer that! As of now, however, this is not a supported flow:

Thanks for outlining the benefits you see in having such a solution available. They are more than worth taking into account as we move forward.

Hi, all well in playback but still issues surrounding doing anything else - it really doesn’t like it and the waiting/Uh Oh message comes up, stopping playback and it takes a very long time to restart.

@beka

Hello,
When will the new build with the fix be available for download, please?

Hi @beka @benjamin

It has gone very quiet, a brief update (even with nothing to report the silence is deafening) is better than silence or keeping us guessing.

:folded_hands:

:waving_hand: Hello everyone

(and thank you @Jean-Claude_Gallard and @PixelPopper for explicitly asking for an update. I was eager to write this post as well )

We are all very grateful for the active help many of you have offered us and for the time everyone has so graciously given us to discover the cause of the issue and come up with a solution.

The fix our team has been working on has just been released for Early Access and the production build is soon to follow.

If you’d like to try the fix right now, please see this article on how to join (and then leave) Early Access.

Can’t wait to follow up with the next message :raising_hands:

Hello @beka
Since we pretty all pay a monthly or yearly membership and haven’t been able to use your/our software, do you plan on offering us a one-month discount or compensation for the time we couldn’t use our music player?

@beka

Hello, can you tell us the release date of the build with the fix directly in Roon? (I don’t want to use early access).

Hi everyone,

We are immensely happy to announce that the fix for audio devices disappearing and reappearing has been released today with build 1559:

Could you please update Roon to the latest build and let us know what you experience? Early Access feedback has been nothing but positive, so we’re hoping for the exact same in production.

We couldn’t be more thankful for your help and patience while as we’ve seen this through :raising_hands:

Roon desktop not booting up so went to see and it had switched itself off. Word to the wise.

All working well again, server on Mac mini m4, MacOS 26.
Thx!

Out of curiosity, what was the issue?

This has just started happening to me today - incredibly annoying & disappointing.

I’m running Server 2.55 (build 1560) earlyaccess (64 bit) on a Windows 11 13i7 NUC.

I decided to play some music & saw Roon only listing 2 of my 10 (?) endpoints.
Rebooting my NUC didn’t change the list of available endpoints, but when I chose one (Meridian 218) & started playing, some of the others popped up.
I then stopped playing, chose my main endpoint (Meridian 861v8) and then played a track from an album on my NAS, which kept stopping. I played a different album, the first track was ok, the next 2 skipped, then the next one stopped 60% through.

This isn’t ok…

@vadim @noris - it’s happening again today.
Please can you get in touch & enable diagnostics, or whatever you need to do.
Thanks.

Edit / Info: For a very very long time, I’ve had occasional drop-outs from Roon on my ‘main’ system - which is my Meridian 861v8 & ID41 card - which I’d attributed to network gremlins. My NUC & these endpoints are connected through 1 common switch, which is 1 Fibre switch & 1 normal switch away from my Router. My NAS (audio file storage) is directly connected to my Router.

However, I’ve had far more regular drop-outs on my Meridian 251 (on my terrace) which is connected directly to my router, but as this was never ‘critical listening’ I just tolerated it & re-connected. This behaviour has been happening for years.

A few weeks ago you released an update which completely fixed these drop-outs - and made me realise the problem wasn’t actually my network after all ! I think the problem was something to do with server memory overload, but I can’t recall the details.

But since yesterday (or perhaps another recent update) the drop-outs / lost endpoints has been happening every few minutes - so something has clearly changed back and it is far worse than it was before.
