Thanks!!!
Saw this in another form about HQplayer posted by Miska….
Maybe someone smarter can explain….I thought convolution was all about phase…
If it’s ONLY the frequency response of your speakers you intend to correct, PEQ will work just fine. And Miska’s comments are all correct regarding delays, increased CPU processing and sampling rate restrictions. However, none of these are deal breakers with today’s PCs, especially for audio where delays are not important as opposed to videos. Besides, there is a whole lot more you can do with convolution filters including but not limited to speaker/box phase correction, virtual bass arrays, removal of excess phase, etc. all of which will contribute to the overall sound and imaging.
So, I have a buddy who’s interested in getting into this stuff… but he’s not very familiar with REW. Should he start by using your PDF that you made? Or maybe start watching your latest video that you just posted on YouTube and follow that step by step?
Thanks
The techniques in the most recent videos are improved both in terms of procedures and implementation due to continuous developments in REW features. This recent one (and there’s part II) is the best so far:
I like to think they don’t require prior REW experience but I’d go to REW’s own manual written by John himself for learning REW.
You want to be in the SPL & Phase graph for metrics.
Is there a difference in options for macOS?
I’m using the latest version I could find (V5.20.13 )but there are things like cross correlation and use multiple measurements which simply don’t appear
Hi there,
great thread and a fantastic guide to this very complex workflow.
Thanks for all your effort you put in here.
I have a Genelec 8351A in combination with the GLM room correction kit from Genelec.
I would like to update the room correction, as number of applied filters are limited within the 8351A.
One way would be to go this route, another option would be to use accurate for generating the convolution files for Roon (May be in a later stage I would like to integrate the convolution files into HQP, but before the HQP remote app allows to switch output devices).
Besides the costs of accurate can you comment if one way or the other is „better“ according to the achievable results?
I know a little bit about REW, but this quite some time ago as it was previous to my 8351A (around 2016), so I guess this route could have quite a steep learning curve for me, but if the results would justify this, I am willing to go down this road.
Any thoughts on this highly appreciated.
Thx!
I have not used Accurate but both REW and Accurate are designed to accomplish EQ in the Frequency and Time domain.
- REW does have a steep learning curve but OCA does an excellent job of providing step-by-step instructions. I hate to admit I’ve watched some of his videos multiple times, taking notes, and slowing it down to .75 speed.
I would suggest watching the video and then deciding if you can do it yourself. Here is the link → https://youtu.be/zmIqJ_jlZPw?si=R68-7yuk6B8U0iFB
The only cost is your time…
Err, you’d actually need rePhase to accomplish that.
From the first run through the video, this rePhase seems to be the most critical part and I guess I need to collect first all informations of my speakers which are required for that.
I have found crossover frequencies for the 8351A but nothing on port peak frequency.
Am I already stuck with this route?
You can place the mic inside the speaker port and measure with REW to determine the port frequency.
The more I read the more I get confused.
I think I will try out Focus Fidelity, should be easier than Acourate but results should be on the same level.
What was confusing? Can you share your mdat file?
I haven’t started yet with measurements, I have received my measurment equipment today.
But all this rephase stuff looks to me very complicated from reading and watching the video.
Surely doable as others have shown but propably I need to much time I am willing to invest to get it done.
I also recently chose Focus Fidelity and am enjoying my filter
It appears to be quite a deep rabbit hole, but watch the videos and read the guides. I hadn’t used REW for over a year so I was very rusty, yet this week, with new speakers, not only did I sort out new REW measurements, I also added in Rephase adjustments.
The basic measurements make the cake, the Rephase adjustments add the icing. What’s a cake with no icing?
