Nucleus not found by Roon Remotes after power outage (ref#Q0LIUP)

Full form submission

What’s happening?

I'm having trouble connecting to Roon

Nucleus + Visibility problem. I had a hard power outage today - after power restored my Nucleus is no longer found by Roon remotes. Nucleus not showing up in Explorer as a connected device nor is it visible as a connected device in Synology NAS. Nucleus is showing white power LED and Amber LED solid, green LED flashing.

I assume that you have rebooted the Nucleus, and there has been no change?

Can you try attaching a monitor or a TV to the HDMI connector of the Nucleus and post a photo of any messages that are displayed? Thanks.

Thanks Geoff, I have rebooted Nucleus+ several times. I will dig around for an errant HDMI cable and see what I can see.

You might also try rebooting the entire network and devices so that it restarts from the ISP modem/router and then devices. Sometimes the modem/router takes longer to start than the devices and it might not have assigned IPs correctly?

I connected an HDMI cable to the Nucleus and my monitor sees no signal.

Did you try rebooting it with the HDMI cable hooked up or just plugging it in while it was on?

I initially had plugged in the HDMI while the Nucleus was running, but just now I rebooted (unplugged Nucleus) with the HDMI plugged in, repowered the Nucleus and still no signal.

I just verified that the HDMI cable works fine with another device. This thing is a brick?

Are there other ways to assess functionality/problems?

I’m afraid it looks like it.

Two questions:

  • Is the unit still within the 2 year warranty period?
  • Did you buy it from a dealer or direct from Roon Labs?

Your answers will determine the next steps. Thanks.

Thanks Geoff,

The Nucleus was purchased 3 years ago (!) from a dealer.

I wonder if a computer repair shop might be able to look into it. Or does Roon do repair work on their units?

Hi @Kenneth_Suelzle,

Thanks for writing in, and I’m sorry to hear about your Nucleus issues - are you able to use another device as a temporary Roon Server, so you have access to your music in the meantime?

You can get in touch with your dealer to see if they’re able to service repairs. If not, we can absolutely get an RMA started for you, which would involve shipping the unit to Roon directly for diagnosis and repair.

Let me know how you’d like to proceed.

Assuming it’s an internal hard drive failure, it does power up.

Could I just try installing a new drive? If so, how would I go about installing Roon software on the new drive?

The Nucleus was backing up to my NAS and the music library is resident on the NAS as well.

I am able to use another device in the meantime.

Thanks.

Hi @Kenneth_Suelzle,

You certainly can! I’ll list out the necessary steps below (Note that you’ll need a USB drive for this process that you can connect to a computer, and then the Nucleus.)

The first thing you’ll want to do is purchase a new SSD. Here is a link to one SSD option we recommend to many users:

https://www.amazon.com/Transcend-TS128GMTE110S-128GB-Solid-State/dp/B07CXC32T2/ref=sr_1_1?tag=roonlabs0b-20

And here is a short video on how to replace the SSD on your device: Nucleus SSD replacement.mp4

After that, you’ll need to format the SSD. We have a good help article you can find here for next steps. Start from step #3 :

Essentially, you’ll be flashing the ROCK OS to a USB drive, and using it to boot and format the new SSD in your Nucleus.

Once you’ve successfully flashed ROCK onto the new SSD, keep your Nucleus online and let me know. From there, we can update you to the Nucleus OS on our end. :+1:

I’ll be on standby for any questions you have in the meantime!

Just a thought, before he goes out and buys parts. Could he try accessing the bios on the nucleus to see if it is still viable?
I know on Intel NUCs you connect a keyboard and press F2 as you start the unit.
After that F9 set defaults, then you can customize from there.
Then F10 to save and exit settings.

Good idea - I’ll check to make sure the MB is viable before tossing in a new SSD.

I connected a keyboard and tried to enter bios with F2 - no signal via HDMI.

Also, I noticed the caps lock wouldn’t respond with the keyboard connected so… not just an SSD issue.

I’ll have to give this some thought as to how to proceed.

Thanks for all the help Geoff, bearFNF and Benjamin.

Actually Benjamin, now I have a new problem. I installed Roon Server on a PC and ran the backup file from the Nucleus for the install. Now I can’t change the backup directory on my PC version of Roon. It still thinks it’s running on a Nucleus and I don’t see how to change it’s mind…

Do you have a solution?

I will also post this as a separate topic.

Did you try clicking the three dots shown in yor screenshot? It should give you some options. “Edit” should be one of them. You should then be able to either reassign the backup location or delete the backup entry in order to create a new one.

Thanks for the thought, unfortunately the Edit options are only “downstream” of “Nucleus +”. It interprets the directory as not available even though the rest of the string is correct.

That’s odd - the “Choose folder…” screen in Roon should be showing you the contents of your PC file system, now that Roon Server is running on your PC.

Can you post a screenshot? Thanks.
