Actually, I can’t find any specs in the Roon store for the RAM. What type of RAM does it use and how much does it come with? How many slots are available inside the unit? Did you get the RAM from Roon?
Thanks

I believe the Nucleus One comes with 4 gb of RAM. Which Roon claims to be enough for a 100k track library. But from reading around here I would reckon 4 gb to be insufficient.
Roon does not sell separate memory modules. I have no idea what kind of memory modules fit in the Nucleus. Perhaps @jim_Schanzenbach can enlighten you there.
Perhaps under ideal conditions?
Roon, on my Salkstream III with 8gb RAM installed (OS is Arch Linux), consistently uses 4-5gb. My music collection contains about 27k tracks consisting of about 9k local files and 18k Qobuz favorites.
I can easily see the Nucleus One having issues with some collections even if the track count is well within Roon recommendations.
I am recalling similar numbers from back when my 8 gb RAM 2014 Mac Mini was running my Roon Server. Running on LMDE 6 (Linux) Roon’s RAM usage sat around 6-7 gb with (back then) an 80k track library. About 14k Qobuz and the rest local.
I can´t check what the current RAM usage is on my NUC as Roon ROCK doesn´t have the ability to show that kind of stuff. But I should be ok for quite awhile with the built in 12 gb of RAM. The Nucleus uses pretty much the same software as Roon ROCK. And it can´t show RAM usage either. So the machine either works or it doesn´t.
OK I installed the new RAM, went wit the 16gb upgrade. you have to remove 12 screws to open the box and then 4 more to free the card up to be flipped over to get at the RAM stick. very easy to pull out and replace. I powered it up without any issues. after about 2 minutes it went on normally, continued to load the remaining 25k albums. Not a single crash since then. it been 20 hours now. So I’m pretty confident that was the issue as it would crash every 10 minutes before.
This is the memory I used : Crucial 16GB DDR4 2666 MT/s (PC4-21300) SODIMM 260-Pin Memory - CT16G4SFRA266
I hope this helps others, I really think that over time the Nuc One just needs this extra memory as the software demands increase. This was never an issue for me until recently and my library has been stable throughout that time.
Yes it a 4gb strip. 16 gb replacement fixed the issue
Many thanks to all those responding to this issue especially you Jim. I have ordered the 16GB RAM and will have it in a couple days. of course, when I went to disassemble the unit to look at the RAM the very last teeny tiny screw is going nowhere. Ugh. I can’t get enough leverage using the tiny jewlers screwdrivers needed for the screw and I think it’s almost stripped at this point. I’ll see if my son can get it out or I may have to drill it out (yikes!).
Anyway, will report back once I have the new RAM installed.
Thanks again, all.
Hi @Keith_Winand,
Thanks again for keeping us updated throughout the process. When you have a chance, let us know how the RAM replacement goes and whether it makes a difference. We’ll be here if you run into any issues or need help with next steps.
I installed the 16GB of RAM and the Nucleus server software has been running 3 1/2 days without a restart. So, guess it’s fixed. If that changes I will update.
Roon - please do your users a solid and upgrade the amount of RAM you put in these things. Even bumping it up to 8GB will be better than standard 4GB or give and option of an upgrade when ordering. Also, a bit of a faster processor in an updated model would be nice too. Just sayin’…
That sounds very reasonable. As RAM isn’t that expensive. And it appears to solve a lot of issues. 4 gb of RAM was great 20 years ago…
