I had to have the extra box installed on the left
It’s a slave unit from the main - so I’m now considering getting a feed directly from the meter, minimising any ‘contact’ with the rest of the house wiring - so the extra box may be a blessing in disguise
That will cost about £160 all in
No point in half measures now you have started……
Thanks
Currently thinking POWER AMP To dedicated power.
Pre amp, dac, nucleus into PS Audio P3 into wall socket
And investment into some Acoustic room treatments
So what did u plug into dedicated socket ? Just power amp?
I did one run to this metal MK brand double wall socket for the main system - my two PS regenerators go into these
The PS then power the two Lyngdorf amps (one for the Quads, the other for the W210 bass speakers) plus the SOtM gear and network switch
The other white plastic box on is the general house mains - that is used for a couple of Hue lights and the diffuser backlights - this used to be used for all of it
I ran another dedicated cable to my network section, again with a metal MK double. As it’s on the wall in the garage, I just surface mounted the cable and the box
That has two LPS plugged into it. One for my Nucleus, the other to power another network switch and a short fibre converter loop
Went online and found the dirty power meter the guy was using in the video. Seems like a good idea and not real expensive so I ordered one. Will be interesting to see the difference between the wall power and the isolated separately grounded circuit in the media closet. Plus the difference in the power supplied by the utility company, Panamax power conditioner, UPS system and the backup generator.
Cool
Let me know what u find out
Did you test it and listened?
The best sound for you is the best choice for you in my humble opinion.
Got the Trifield EMI meter today. The display shows VAC and mVp-p. Per the documentation a reading below 50.0 mVp-p is considered low noise.
The original house wiring indicated 120. to 350. mVp-p all around the house. The lower levels were at the opposite end of the house from the distribution/circuit box and kitchen/laundry area. At the higher levels I could hear voices coming from the meter speaker. Weird…
The reading in the media closet with the isolated 20 amp circuit was 18. mVp-p. So apparently the posts about running new mains were on target. The ouput from the Panamax power conditioner plugged into a UPS was 14.-15. Thinking that looks good.
Your findings with the meter are in agreement with what has been held as current wisdom with regards to house to hifi wiring.
Good to have confirmation.
Did these voices tell you to upgrade your system with some esoteric componentry, or they’ll keep haunting you?
Joking aside, do not panic, those are likely from an AM station, which is not unusual actually.
The real question is though, do all the ubiquitous electromagnetic interferences, conducted or free field, make it to be audible or not?
Anyone OCD about chasing those ghosts should invest into a proper faraday cage installation around their listening room with appropriate incoming AC and Ethernet isolation (sorry, no wifi allowed in there), just as it’s done when properly testing electronic equipment to verify it’s complying with codes.
I’d approve to that rather than reading about some of the snake oil paraphernalia used to “reduce noise and get blacker backgrounds”.
It’s worth experimenting. I installed dedicated lines in my last house and heard no difference. None.
Power cords have always helped to varying degrees on my Musical Design, Pass and now Devialet amps. More resolution, tighter bass and often a clearer soundstage.
I run my Devialet into the high current outlet of an Audioquest Niagara 1200. I hear less grunge and more dynamics then straight into the wall. In this system, adding a PS Audio power port outlet also lowered grunge. In previous systems, I heard no improvement from adding the outlet ahead of the conditioner or amp.
FWIW - none of the above changes made more of a difference than putting the Devialet on Isoacoustics Orea footers. The power changes have been important, but the footers were a true and cost effective OMG change.
Good luck, Try stuff, and most of all have fun. As always, YMMV.
Thx
Hearing your experience with the footers is really surprising
For the voices on the power line, it did sound like a talk show so your reference to Am station is probably correct. Interesting that the voices only came from plugs on the inside of exterior walls. For the interior of the house the audible noise with the higher readings was mainly static.
I read all the threads/posts here with interest, hoping to learn something new. In this case regeneration vs conditioning vs new home runs peaked my curiosity and seemed worthy of investigation. First step there was checking to see if there was indeed a detectable issue to be resolved, hence the EMI power meter.
For this older house the primary power distribution/circuit box is on the inside wall of the laundry room with breakers for all the circuits. From there a 100amp line runs to the other end of the house to another breaker box in the HVAC closet. Apparently when this house was built in the 60’s it had electric heating. When gas was added (before my time) the circuit box became a wall ornament.
During a home remodel, to add a bedroom suite for my mother, the electrician advised we would need a separately grounded circuit box with a new main to the bedroom to bring it up to code. That new main came from the unused power in the HVAC closet instead of the primary breaker panel. On a whim I had the electrician run a second circuit/main to the media closet for the entertainment system.
Apparently, based on pure luck and a whim, I don’t need to do anything to improve the power service.
So you must probably hear something doing the knuckle rap test, no?
What do you think they do to enhance your perception of music?
I don’t fully understand the science, but I read a number of good reviews and tried them. Was stunned at the improvement. Over the years I have tried cones and other footers, but never heard much of a difference.
I now have the Giaa footers on my speakers and other isoacoustic pucks under my sub, streamer and other gear. The Giaa’s really opened up my Raidho X1’s, and I heard a noticeable tightening of bass from the sub when I replaced SVS footers with the ISO’s. Nothing dramatic from putting them under the streamer.
The isopuck minis are $99 for 8. So easy to try and see if they make a difference for you.
But - none of this has anything to do with power. Enjoy.
I like your solution. As an apartment dweller I am stuck with few solutions. I ran a direct line (along the floor) from my appliance closet (since the appliances are only intermittently used) and then plug my equipment directly into a self-made quad-hospital grade outlet box. I do not use a filter/noise suppressor as I truly hear easier and freer dynamics in my system. I simply unplug my entire system if there are storms coming. I cannot afford a regenerator, which I think is the gold standard.
Despite the fact I’ve spent rather a lot of money on PS regenerators over the years, my recent experience shows that good mains is the ‘gold standard’ when it comes to cost/sound quality
Did you use shielded cable? I think that’s important
