Description of Issue

Scrolling anywhere on Roon remote on iPhone is choppy.
iPhone model: 13 Pro
Seems I cannot attach a video…
Link to video: (BIG NOTE: the video does not represnt the smooth scrolling in safari, since it could not capture the promotion 120Hz refresh rate, so it seems all is choppy.)

Gesture is normal scrolling.

OK, I created my own thread, but seems I cannot attach a video.

:+1: Videos are unfortunately not uploadable, you can post a link to Google Drive, Dropbox, iCloud+ or whatever, or upload it to Youtube as an unlisted video (only accessible with the link)

Edit: Where’s the thread? I can only find your post in this thread, two posts up

It seems it got merged automatically

LOL. @moderators? Separate threads for remaining issues were requested by Benjamin… I guess it may not matter, whatever is preferred and most helpful for support to put this stupid issue to bed, but it’s a bit confusing

I updated my above post with link to video

Dang, there is a problem. I reviewed my recorded video, and all scrolling is choppy, even in safari. But that is not how I see it on the screen - scrolling in safari is butter smooth.

I must be dumb or blind because I don’t see a bit of difference between the Safari and Roon cases :man_shrugging:

They asked for videos taken with a different phone so that the actual finger movement can be seen, but from the screen video I suppose it might be good enough because you seem to be just doing a short swipe and then let it go on its own, without the finger remaining on the display, right?

Edit:

Ah, I was thinking I’m losing it  So maybe a video taken with a second phone is needed after all

Right, short swipes and leaving to scroll itself, see above, that is not how I see it, the recording is bad

Unfortunately my other device, iPad Pro 12,9 2021 cannot even record the smoothness of scrolling in safari, it also comes out choppy, even at 60fps video.

Getting more and more confusing LOL. Well, I will see for myself in 3 weeks I guess.

(For now, I just tried for the tenth time with by iPad Pro M2 12.9, comparing the result of an image search for record covers in Safari (to ensure there are similar pictures) with Roon, and for the life of me I can’t see a significant difference to my eyes, but the iPad Pro M2 is obviously a beefy machine, so that’s not really comparable to an iPhone)

My guess is, with the iPhone 13 Pro and promotion, I do not have a device that can capture a 120Hz refresh rate…

It’s a damn complicated problem to properly document this :frowning:

Hey, @Suedkiez - I am complaining about iPhone!!! Scrolling in Roon remote on my iPad Pro 12,9 is fine!!!

I know, I was just thinking maybe I can see what people mean when I try it on the iPad, but clearly not. Thanks for confirming that it’s OK for you on the iPad. I suppose that this at least rules out differences in perception or me having ■■■■■■ eyes

I’ll have to wait for the iPhone 15 Pro Max then, which is on its way. @Markus_Hubner above said that he still sees it with that.

Yeaa, good thing! I also went the mile and reduced all my album art to 600x600, just to see if it will make a difference and it didn’t. FYI, this mostly my local library, stored internally on the SSD of the Mac mini.

Edit: I am also very sensitive to screen choppiness and tearing, I see it… and bothers me. I could not be happier when they introduced promotion on the iPad and iPhone, I jumped on it immediately.

If I had to document this, I would need a camera with 120fps, which I do not have…

I have the suspicion that I am particularly insensitive / don’t care much / typically don’t scroll quickly in Roon, so my impressions may not be representative.

But speaking of covers, in the transition from Roon 1.7 to 1.8 the cache performance got worse, so that when scrolling on slower devices you get a lot of grey covers at first. That’s what bothers me a lot  Although the iPad and Macbook Air M2 cope well because they are fast little beasts, but it was never improved back to what it was in 1.7, and I still see it on my average Samsung Galaxy A 10.1 tablet. Maybe the default behavior in 1.7 was not actually better but it was possible to increase the image cache size with a setting, which helped a lot, and this was removed in 1.8. I complained about this back then …

Alright, but my complaint is not only about scrolling through a view with covers. Even scrolling an album view with a lot of songs, say a 3CD album, the view is only text, and it is still choppy.

Yeah it’s a different issue
