Roon login Issue - I can log into Roon website, but end up in a loop

I found this article …

… and thought it would help solve my log in problem. I tried all of your suggestions but none worked. I also deleted and reinstalled a clean version of the Roon app.

I have a 2012 MacMini running OS 10.15.7, the latest version. i7 processor, 8 gb of RAM, plenty of unused space on hard drive. Problem started last Friday, when I sent a note to support. I can log into Roon website, but end up in a do loop like the OP of this thread. Roon app opens web browser, it knows me when I log in, but when I try to log into the app as me, it takes me back to the first screen on my browser.

I thought it may have been a credit card issue but when I logged into my roon account it said my subscription was paid through late December 2024. Credit card company confirmed roon received payment.

I think there was a recent upgrade to the app as I hadn’t noticed the roon icon on the right side of the menu bar at the top of the screen.

Have you tried a different browser? Sometimes the browser may interfere with the pop up.

I tried a clean install of Firefox with the same result. Cleared all cookies and cache from Safari first without success. Powered off wi-fi and Ethernet switches to no effect. Shut down MacMini and rebooted. No effect.

Hi @dark-blue-moon, I have been experiencing the same exact sign in loop problem with a MAC Mini OS for months. I reached out for help here but have not received any workable solution. I was only told there may be an upgrade to the ROON APP coming soon. I even reached out to contact@roonlabs.com and never received a response other than a notification that my email was received. I have been a long time ROON subscriber and I am at my wits end. I have been using Tidal on it’s own to listen to music but every time I listen I am reminded of the fact that ROON no longer works and there is literally nothing I can do about it. I hope you have better luck.

Make sure you disable any firewall or internet security in router and on the Mac.

Power cycle the whole chain of network starting from the modem / router.

Perhaps try this:

  • Exit out of Roon
  • Navigate to your Roon’s Database Location
  • Find the folder that says “Roon”
  • Rename the “Roon” folder to “Roon_old”
  • Reinstall the Roon App to generate a new Roon database folder

(Only) If you are a Mac user, one thing you may consider is a MacBook M2 with no less than 16G RAM.

If you care about fan, look into one of those compatible NUC options with corresponding NUC fanless chassis.

Many third party servers are not officially certified by Roon. Be careful that many also use underpowered CPU.

Hi. I’ve just come back to Roon aftera couple of years absence, and I was experiencing the same “log in Loop” for the past few days. However I do think I’ve resolved it this morning ! I deleted ALL Roon folders from the Mac Pro I had set up as the server, and cleared the history / cache from Chrome too. I then did a clean install of Roon ( downloaded from the Roon site). I selected the Mac Pro again to host the new database, then got to the log in page. That redirected me to the website log in where I signed in and allowed it to relaunch Roon. First time around it took me back to the log in page of the app and back around the same loop again. But second time around it logged in fine and the app launched OK. Strange, but it is working now !

Peter, thx for your suggestions. I’ve done the restart the entire network routine, starting with modem, then router, then Ethernet switches. It didn’t work.

I can disable the firewall in the router, but I don’t view that as a long-term solution given loss of protection to other devices on network.

I will try renaming the old Roon folder approach. Another user posted that he had the same problem with a new M2 Mac Mini. He deleted the Roon folder and did a clean install of the Roon app. It worked for him after one repeat of the do loop problem.

Sounds more like a Roon software problem than a hardware problem given it occurred on a new Mac Mini.

Will post results of my efforts.

Tony, thanks for your post. I’m going to try it. Per my response to Peter Lie, if it happened to you with a new Mac Mini it sounds like a Roon software problem, not a hardware problem. Roon needs to continue to support all the Mac users out there.

Peter, I renamed old Roon folders, deleted the existing Roon app, reinstalled Roon app. It did not let me log in after several tries.

To answer one of your questions, the firewall on the Mac Mini is off. My next step is to turn off the firewall on my router, which is on. Will post results.

Peter, I turned off the firewall on the router and disabled content blockers in Safari for the roon website. Still no luck.

The last thing I can do having gone through your suggestions is what Benjamin of Roon Support suggested - connect my Mac Mini directly to my router, and if that works to the first of the two Ethernet switches, to see if the router, or the Ethernet switches are creating the problem.

Hi @Stephen_Meyers,

I understand your frustration with not being able to access your Roon account. However, if you could please keep all future replies tied to this thread, it will be far easier to track shared information. By sending messages to other Roon staff, it’s only mudding the water with our attempt in finding you a solution. Thanks for your cooperation there!

Certainly let me know how the above goes. We’ll be on standby for the results and if needed, further investigation. I’m confident we can get you back into your account :+1:

I simply responded to a post by someone else with the same problem in a thread I’d found on the subject before writing to you directly. I then saw a later post by someone with a new M2 chip Mac Mini who had the same problem. Both that person and Peter Lie of Lumin tried to help. Unfortunately one of their common solutions didn’t work.

I will let you know directly if connecting my Mac Mini directly to the router works, but it’s not a viable solution unless I can connect all my other devices using an Ethernet switch. If my Mac Mini works when connected directly to the router I will then try it connected to the first Ethernet switch in that same room. If that works we can assume the Ethernet switch to which it is currently connected is the problem.

On a separate matter, is the Nucleus being updated? There are none in stock on the Roon Store site and the Store seems to have no other items it used to carry. Several audio dealers I checked also noted the Nucleus as out of stock.

Roon post directions on how to properly rename folder delete app, etc. on a Mac.

Now one person deleted and others didn’t is the reinstall of Roon finding the renamed folder.

That being said how about moving folder to storage device if possible? Careful to check size of destination to ensure enough space.

Good luck Windowz guy.

Benjamin, I tried connecting the Mac Mini directly to my router. No luck. I had uninstalled the Roon app and reinstalled it with a fresh download of the .dmg file. It didn’t help. No firewall on the Mac Mini nor the router. There is no longer any Roon folder on my machine. Per Peter Lie I had renamed a few old ones Roon Old #1, etc. Any further ideas?

I have a couple of questions. This problem started out of the blue some time over the weekend, if I recall correctly. The Mac Mini is on all the time. But Roon sometimes is disabled when an update occurs and for some reason it often doesn’t restart automatically after an update. So I did what I typically did and restarted it. But it wouldn’t restart. I was assuming that was why the app was not open. Does that make sense?

Not being a software expert, my only other question is whether it might make sense to change the email address and password associated with the account. In other words, start me off as if I were a new customer.

Your assistance is sincerely appreciated.

Tony, when you say you deleted ALL Roon folders, does that include the RoonBackups folders? Because I don’t want to delete them perhaps I’ll try moving them to another external disk drive, including the folders I renamed Roon old 1, 2, etc.

Hi @Stephen_Meyers,

Thanks for the update! Our records indicate that your mac mini hasn’t connected to our servers for 6 days, which points to something blocking the connection between the device and our server.

Because of this, we’re not able to enable a diagnostic report on the dedicated server.

Could you please reproduce your issue, share very specific step by step instructions on how you land yourself in your issue state. Simliar to :

  1. step 1
  2. step 2
  3. step 3 etc.

From there, we’ll need to review a set of manual Roon logs from the issue device. Please use the directions found here and send over a set of logs to our File Uploader.

Thanks!

Benjamin - precisely, there has been no access. Yet I can log into my Roon account and to the Roon community. I will try to put together a step by step process with screen shots. But if I am not logging in, can’t start the Roon app and have no Roon folder where will there be a log? I will read all the instructions.

Hi Stephen. As I was doing a fresh install there was no back up folder for me to delete. If I had one I would choose to duplicate it onto another drive so that all Roon folders on the serving Mac could be renewed ( assuming you can then reinstate the backup to Roon of course !).
Good luck with it.

Benjamin, I just uploaded two Log folders with my email address in the name of the folders. These were the only two on my computer and the files in them date back several years. They were in my latest Roon folder, which I had renamed Old Roon 8. I hope they are helpful.

Here is a step by step explanation of what I just did and again failed to get the Roon app running. I have screen shots for several of the steps.

Before trying the process yet again I removed the Roon app from my Mac Mini and had previously renamed the several Roon folders Old Roon 1, 2 and so on.

  1. Cleared the history and cookies on Firefox
  2. Powered down the Mac Mini
  3. Restarted the Mac Mini
  4. Opened Safari, went to roonlabs.com and downloaded a new disk image of the Roon app for Mac OS
  5. Opened the .dmg file
  6. Moved the Roon.app to the Applications folder as directed and it copied
  7. Opened the Roon app
  8. Got a screen saying Choose Roon Server (screen shot 1)
  9. Clicked on use this mac and got log in screen (screen shot 2) - clicked log in
  10. Firefox opened and asked me to choose account - my account showed and I chose it (screen shot 3)
  11. I was sent back to the same log in screen and hit log in - picked my account again and was again sent back to the log in screen (screen shot 4)
  12. Clicked log in again and got the welcome screen back (screen shot 5) - clicked my account name
  13. Back again to log in screen and I gave up (screen shot #6)

Let me know you want me to upload the screen shots. I hope the upload and this step by step explanation helps you find a solution.

Firefox can block the login pop-up, double check that you have it set to allow all pop-ups.
