Roon login Issue - I can log into Roon website, but end up in a loop

Rugby - pop-ups are not blocked nor are cookies.

Two things:

  1. I suggest you set default browser back to Safari and clear Safari cookies / cache, avoid Firefox in the whole process at least until this Roon login issue is completely resolved. (I’m a Firefox user.)

  2. Since the previous removal of Roon folder alone didn’t help, you need to try a complete removal of Roon before clean installing it from scratch again.

Peter, one question - other than moving Roon app to the trash and emptying the trash, what else is a complete removal? Should I take all the renamed Old Roon folders off the computer and save them elsewhere? Any other steps?

Peter, there is a method described at the end of this article. Is that what you had in mind?

I tried to search for other posts discussing Roon files that need to be deleted. So far I’ve only found: Delete everything Roon-related in ~/Library, e.g. Roon, RoonServer and RAATServer

One other thing. It is also possible backup software or Time Machine will screw up your Roon.

Peter : I don’t use Time Machine. I will disable automated backups.

I’ll wait to hear from Benjamin at Roon support, but in the interim will delete any Roon files as noted in PC Magazine article - there may be some files in the Library folders listed in the magazine that need to be deleted. Will save those to a thumb drive.

Thx again for trying to help.

Hi @Stephen_Meyers,

As you mention above, these log files date back to September, and do not provide any insight into your current situation.

Peter is correct with the above process for removing all your Roon files on your computer. It will remove any saved data and profile information. After performing this, you’d be starting completely fresh with Roon (or, if you have a backup you could restore from.)

One you do the above, perform a fresh install of Roon, and this time if you could, please send over new logs from your ‘Roon’ folder (not Roon Server) and we can take a closer look. :+1:

Will try finding these folders and look in others as suggested at the end of the PC Magazine article. Will do a fresh install of Roon and see if I can log in.

I don’t have a Roon Server folder. I had several folders simply named Roon that I’ve renamed and moved. And I had the Roon app in the Applications folder, which I will again remove for the fresh install.

Will advise.

I confirmed the Mac Mini firewall is off.
I cleared the history in Safari.
I deleted every file I could find with the word Roon in it (except for some webarchive and rtf files) and saved them on an external drive that I ejected from the system.
I cleared Safari history after making it my default browser.

Still in same do loop. End up with message asking if I want to allow this page to open this app. I say yes. Go through the whole cycle again. The install never happens. There are no logs to provide.

Interestingly, the little Roon icon on the right of the top menu bar says the server is running. When I go through the process it acknowledges my Roon account and lets me sign in. But that’s as far as it goes.

I am at the point where the only thing further I can think of doing is a clean install of OS X Catalina, after doing a back-up using Time Machine so I save whatever else I have on the machine, which is not much. The music is on an external drive and my backups are on another

Any thoughts?

  1. You’re reinstalling Roon 2.0, not 1.8 right?

  2. In router, see if there’s IPv6 and disable it. Also disable any router firewall and internet security. Then reboot the whole network of devices.

  3. After doing step 2, if it still cannot login on Mac - Try login using a phone or iPad on WiFi running Roon Remote app instead (although I’m not sure this makes sense or not).

Peter, I’d be reinstalling whatever version of Roon comes from the download page. When I click on word Roon on the left of the top menu bar and click About, it does not respond. Here is a screen shot of the .dmg file I downloaded yesterday, which seems to confirm there was some kind of upgrade of the program on or about 1/5.

It says file modified 1/5/24 even though I downloaded it yesterday. It also says version 1.0, but not sure that reflects the version of Roon.

As to router, I had already turned off firewall, then restarted the entire network, modem first, router (and other mesh units) second, Ethernet switches last, to no avail. I can try again after having deleted all the Roon files and will look for iPv6.

Big question - why has Roon been able to update numerous times since I started using it in 2019, but has problems this time? Same Mac Mini, same modem and ISP, same mesh network.

As to using iPad, I tried but it does not see a Roon server.

Will let you know what happens after one more go at it. If that fails, I am going to do a clean install of OS 10.15, as it can’t hurt and would remove items that I may not be finding.

Peter, I turned off iPv6, but it didn’t help. Last thing I’m waiting for is feedback from Eero support on how to turn off the router’s firewall. And again, cannot connect to Roon from iPad either as it cannot find an operating core.

  1. Eero is a frequent culprit in Roon network discovery issues.
I recommend using Eero only in Bridge mode, preceded by a normal non-mesh router such as Asus or TP-Link (or an ISP router). (With Asus, enable settings → LAN → IPTV → Enable Multicast Routing.)

  2. Try setting Mac OS DNS to 8.8.8.8 and retry.

  3. Enable the WiFi hotspot function of your phone. Switch the Mac to use phone WiFi hotspot instead of Eero. You only do this for login, not actually streaming music, so it should not consume too much traffic.

Tried 2. above. Switching DNS to 8.8.8.8 didn’t help at all. I did delete the pre-existing settings.

Will check to see if my cellular account includes personal hot spot and if so, will set up and test.

A post was split to a new topic: Trouble to logging into my account

So, after countless hours checking (1) my ISP, who gave me a new modem and sent a tech out to my house, (2) checking both a 5 yr. old Linksys Velop mesh WiFi/router system and a new Eero Pro 6e system, including disabling firewalls, changing DNS settings, adding various Roon web sites to a list of Allowed Sites in the Eero app on my phone, (3) clearing all old Roon folders and apps off my computer, clearing the history in Safari, trying other web browsers, disabling the firewall on my Mac Mini and making sure it didn’t block cookies, and (4) trying to successfully log into Roon after the 2.0 release was downloaded, all the no avail, the correct answer is simply that notwithstanding language to the contrary in the article below about Mac OS Catalina supporting release 2.0 of Roon, IT DOES NOT on my 2012 vintage Mac Mini with 4-core i7 processor and 8 gb of memory.

KUDOS TO PETER LIE OF LUMIN, their Firmware Lead who supports their products on the Roon Community site, and has helped me before with initial start up questions with my LUMIN U1 mini, for coming up with the right answer. Peter Lie probably spent almost as much time trying to help me as I did testing all the various suggestions. See the solution in the article below from the Roon Help site that Peter suggested.

If you have an older Mac Mini running Catalina, or perhaps even a slightly newer operating system, a NAS, any device on which you’re having trouble logging in, the SOLUTION is to remove Roon 2.0 from your system and download Roon 1.8, the legacy software, which is still available as explained at the link above. In addition you will have to remove the Roon 2.0 app from your iPad, iPhone or Android phone or tablet and reinstall the Roon 1.8 app from the Apple App Store or other site.

Benjamin or another technical support person on the Roon staff alluded to this in an earlier post suggesting the age of my Mac Mini might be the problem Not might be, it is the problem, as is the Roon 2.0 software.

I’ll run Roon 1.8 briefly as in the link above Roon says they’ll support it for awhile, but I will be purchasing a new Mac Mini M2 with 16 gB of memory. (I just prefer Macs, being a user since the early Apple days and as someone who appreciates the reliability and durability of their machines and software and the ability to run other software I sometimes use, like Minim Server and LUMIN’s music playing app, software to convert audio file formats, etc.)

I hope this post and Peter Lie’s advice is helpful to others having trouble logging into Roon after the 2.0 update.

So perhaps my last post was too upbeat and didn’t tell the whole story.

Yes Roon 1.8, the legacy software, is running on my Mac Mini. But Qobuz is not functional - can’t play music, even though albums show, and no cover artwork for any of the albums. But Roon shows that I am signed into Qobuz and I can play Qobuz music on its app or using the LUMIN software.

One of the points of Roon is to be able to integrate all of your music sources, to search both your own albums stored on your network as well as albums on a music service like Qobuz. So at present Roon 1.8 is only really 50% functional.

Does Roon Support have a solution to this problem?

So, after further input from Peter Lie of LUMIN, I did a few things.

To determine if my ISP was the source of the problem I connected my Mac Mini via WiFi to a hotspot on a friend’s iPhone. Roon showed that it was logged into Qobuz, but still could not play music. This suggested the ISP was not the problem.

Today’s task was to try to download Roon 2.0, not 1.8, on my wife’s 2015 iMac i5, 16 gb RAM running Mac OS Monterrey 12.5.7. The goal was to determine if the latest build of Roon 2.0 was simply not compatible with my 2012 Mac Mini i7, 8 gb RAM running Mac OS Catalina 10.15.

THE ANSWER IS THAT ROON 2.0 IS UP AND RUNNING ON THE IMAC AND THE MACHINE IS LOGGED INTO AND PLAYING MUSIC FROM QOBUZ.

I will be continuing to monitor the performance on this somewhat newer machine before declaring that a solution has been identified, but so far so good.

As I noted previously, it would seem that the latest build of Roon 2.0 is not necessarily compatible with all machines running Mac OS Catalina.

The problem was neither the ISP nor the Mesh WiFi system.

It would seem that the latest build of Roon 2.0 may simply require a newer machine than mine and perhaps a later Mac OS. An open question for me is whether to upgrade to a new M2 Mac Mini or a used late model Intel Mac Mini, as at least one person reported a similar problem with an M2 Mac on this same forum.

I will post any further findings and I hope my experience and the all the time spent by both me and importantly Peter Lie of LUMIN, who monitors the Roon Community, will help some of the others who have had similar experiences.
