Issue reproduced at 01:52 EET (GMT+02:00) on 21-Nov-2023 (23:52 UTC on 20-Nov-2023).
I started playback of an album in the following manner:
Opened Roon Remote on iPad Pro (12.9 5th Gen, iPadOS 17.1.1)
From Home, I opened the menu and selecte Artists
Filtered Artists by typing “night” and the result was a single artist Nightwish.
Clicked on Nightwish
Clicked on Album “Once (Remastered)” - this is a local album
Clicked on play now.
Switched off the iPad.
Came back approximately after 15 mins, swithced on the iPad and opened Roon.
Roon displayed a circle “Connecting to your server” or similar, and then the circle and message went away.
Then I clicked back arrow twice to go back to Artists, and the Artists section is now broken, it is just like the very first screenshot in this thread. Nothing can be done on the Artists section - no filtering, no focus, nothing!
Navigated to Albums section, and also it is broken. The first row of Albums section is grey boxes, and also nothing can be done there too!
Note that music was playing all along, without any skips or interruption.
Finally, I force closed the Roon Remote on iPad at 02:08 EET (GMT+02:00) or 00:08 UTC on 21-Nov-2023.
After re-opening the Roon Remote it is functioning properly.
This happens at least 10-15 times a day, and it will be difficult to note down times. But I will try.
Every time it is the same behaviour - Roon Remote is broken and I have to force close it and re-open it.
@benjamin Another crash of Roon Remote on iPad at 06:42 EET (GMT+02:00) on 21-Nov-2023 (04:42 UTC)
I started playback of playlist “Elton John”, and put the iPad to sleep. When I woke it up and opened Roon Remote, the playlist images were gone, and nothing at all worked.
@benjamin Hi Benjamin, were you able to extract logs for the given timestamps? Any updates on the issue? I see many other people are posting with same sympotms, and it has been 9 days since I posted about this problem. Is there any progress on identifying the root cause of the problem?
If I may speculate (although I am not very familiar with the Roon architecure) this looks to me like a problem with the Roon Remote app itself, and not with the server. I am saying this because I have not even once experienced any playback issue like drops or skips, the server is rock solid.
I hope Roon team gets to the bottom of this soon, and I would really appreciate a bit more proactive approach, like trying harder to reproduce internally. Thank you.
Thank you @benjamin - can you provide an ETA and a timeline? It has been 11 days since I reported this issue. Also other posts are reporting the same.
This issue is easy to reproduce, has this been done internally at your lab?
I would like to point out that Roon Remote on iOS devices is seriously broken, to the point of it is not enjoyable to use Roon any more.
Please do the needful, in the same way that I have done my part to report and reproduce this issue, and it is happening multiple times a day, every day.
The fact that nothing in my network setup changed, other than Roon update, and the fact that I did not have any issues what so ever before the update, point to а defect in the Roon updated version.
Can Roon server saturate a Gigabit connection, to the point that, Roon Remote cannot connect to Roon Server? Also, the issue is mainly happening when the iPad or iPhone was off, aka sleeping.
Yes, it may well be down to a Roon problem but it makes sense to go through everything and make sure. I’m not defending Roon or the software but as previously mentioned it cost nothing to go through everything as part of a process of elimination.
Anyway, I hope you (all) manage to resolve the problem…
Today, around 19:00 EET I experienced, for the first time ever, a loss of aduio zone. In my iPad Remote, the zone “Кухня” disapeared. This is a zone from Blusound Node X, that is wired to router.
Restarting the remote on iPad did nothing, zone is missing.
I opened the Mac mini where the Roon Server is, and opened Roon Remote on it. The zone was there. Then I opened the iPad Remote, and the zone had appeared magically.
This is something new, I never had such an issue before the update.
Interesting that you mention a Bluesound Node X. I too have one and am suffering from IOS remote issues. My Node is a new addition to my setup so I can’t vouch for behaviour in prior versions of Roon Server / Remote.
@support@benjamin 23 days ago, I opened this support request. So far there has not been a satisfactory resolution. Not even an acknowledgement that this is an issue and is under investigation.
I am trying to be polite here, but this isssue is plagueing my Roon setup since the 2.0.25 update, and my patience is coming to an end. I am sure that paying customers deserve a better treatment. You got my money, now I need help in resolving this issue. It is only fair, and I demand proper support on this.
Thanks for following up, and my apologies for any confusion you may have. Per my last reply:
I do mention we’re investigating potential issues. This is unfortunately still the case, to which I don’t have any updates from our development team. I can assure you though, that this issue has priority and that it’s being worked on.
I have had similar problems as discussed here. As per the Roon versions installed they are 2.0 build 1353 (Server, Windows 10 20H2)) and 1.8 build 1125 (Roon Bridge, Pi 4 RoPieee) and the remote running on iPhone 12 iOS 17.1.2. All listed as the latest version at each devise.
The problems started, as I remember it, with the update to the latest Roon version a month or two ago. Noticed a difference when updating the remote from IOS 17.1.1 to 17.1.2. There may have been an update of the Roon software for iOS somewhere in between as well. My guess is that this may have been a combination of Roon software and the iOS 17.1.1. All seems to work OK now with the 17.1.2 iOS.
With you/ Vladislav. Same issues since the remote update. Very buggy. On Nucleus 2.0.25. iOS devices on 17.1.2. Have done the reboots but same issues since updating Roon remote. Nothing else was changed.
