Roon Server Not Responding on older MacOS system after importing file [Hotfix Released] (ref#YMFCBP)

Is Roon Server running?

· No, Roon Server is not running.

For Roon connectivity to work properly, both Roon Server and Roon Remote need to be turned on.

· I can't turn on Roon Server, I need help.

Describe the issue

Roon Server Status: Not Responding

Describe your network setup

Mac Mini (Late 2012) Catalina with Latest Roon Server. Client MacBook Air M2 Latest software connected with Ethernet

:mega: Staff Note: :mega:

I’m running Roon/Roon Server on a Mac Mini Late 2012 (Catalina 10.15.7).
(by the way, the Mac Mini is a great computer to run Roon Server with its 4 cores and SSD storage in the standard 2.5-inch size)

After upgrading to Build 1442, the server does not start properly. It shows a loop of statuses: Running/Error/Not Responding/Running/Error/Not Responding. As a result, none of the clients can connect because the server has trouble starting.

The Mac Mini is dedicated solely to the server, so it’s running a clean installation of Catalina with no other software except Roon. Everything was working smoothly before the upgrade, so it seems like there might be a bug in Build 1442.

Describe the issue

Roon server crashing on filesystem read

Roon server hangs then restarts on reading filesystem. Problem seemed to occur after last Roon update after working perfectly on the same system for the last 2+ years. I have reloaded the server which works fine on radio but crashes as soon as i try to restore a backup of read in the NAS filesystem from scratch. Seemed to be constantly rescanning before crashing. Mac log shows repeated mac error -25294.

I have sent you the logs files. Thanks for help.

How can we help?

· I'm having trouble adding music to my library

Describe the issue

Hi Support, I've purchased and downloaded 2 albums (flaс) from Qobuz. When I put any new album into roon scanned folder, roon server became unavailable and I see it's crashing in the loop. Once I move the album from the scanned folder, the roon server is stable again. I can play the new flac files with no problem on another player

Describe your network setup

roon server is running on MacBook Pro Intel 2017. The network is via local switch, but it seems not relevant to the issue.
Network Streamer - Auralic Aries G2.1. I can play new files no problem directly from the streamer

Update. I’ve collected more information regarding the issue:

  1. The issue occurs on Roon Server running on MacBook Pro Intel (model 2017) MacOS Big Sur 11.7.10
  2. The issue was first spotted after update to Roon 2.0 (build 1442). It was working before
  3. At this moment not possible to add any new FALC files to the watched folder (not only for files downloaded from Qobuz). The Roon server hangs in crashing in the loop
  4. Same FALC files can be added with no issue to the Roon running on another hardware (MacBook Pro M2 Sonoma 14.5)

Hope this will help to investigate

Did you do the basics? Restart your core, streamer, switch? Is the switch managed? Logged in and out of Qobuz?

Yes, I did basics

  1. Removed / re-installed the core
  2. The network setup seems not relevant
  3. Qobus is not relevant either

The issue as of now - the Core not accepting any new FLACs from watched folder. Once I add new FLACs the Core becomes unavailable and running in the loop crashing. It’s jumping from ‘started’ - > ‘error’ → ‘started’, etc If I look from status bar

If I remove FLACs from the watched folded → the Core stabilizes by itself

since the update I am not able to play any music. My screen mostly shows your logo and every now and then the message "Waiting for your Roon Server". Restarts and reinstall have not helped. I run roon server and a client on the same iMac with an external storage.

To aid Roon’s @support team, what is the spec of your Mac and what MacOS version is is running?

Do you have any flac files in the watched folder(s) of your library?

I’ve been having the same problem since the update with my Mac Mini. If I remove all the flac files from the watched folders (leaving only alac files), everything works okay. But as soon as I re-add a single flac file to a watched folder, I lose connection to Roon Server–and don’t get it back until I delete the flac file from the folder.

Describe the issue

Since update to build 1442 I'm constantly seeing the "Waiting for your Roon Server" message which blocks Roon from working.
I'm using a Macbook-Pro (late 2013, BigSur 11.7.10) with 2 external harddrives with all my music on it (FLAC). It worked fine all those years! It even worked a minute before the update. After the update to build 1442 i could only see the "Waiting for your Roon Server" message in endless loops.
After unplugging my DAC, still the same.
After unplugging my harddrives it worked. Roon was back. But no music!
I'm using several Watched-Folders on my 2 harddrives. I've disabled them all and then step by step enabled them again. Some of them are working with the build 1442 but the majority is not working.
When enabling a not working Watched-Folder the "Adding music to library" pops up followed by the popup-message "Waiting for your Roon Server" everything is gone again.

Describe your network setup

A1 Modem, Netgear extender,

Pretty much exclusively flac on this side.

Interesting. After the update, I was unable to connect to Roon Server (I kept getting the same “Waiting” error message as you). Eventually, I decided to delete Roon and reinstall from scratch. That worked . . . until I tried to restore my library from an existing backup, which put me back in “Waiting” error mode. I deleted everything and tried again. This time I didn’t try to restore from a backup; I added my streaming service first, and it worked. I then added watched folders back one at a time. My breakthrough came when I added a folder containing only DSD (.dsf) files, and it worked. But as soon as I added a folder containing flac files, I lost connection. Since then I’ve tried multiple individual flac files and folders containing flac files (all of which worked fine before the update), but every one causes me to lose connection to Roon Server.

Thanks for sharing that. As it is I cannot see myself converting my entire library to another format for this. I do hope a solution is in the works.

Same. At least 90% of my music is on flac. And I have been unable to restore my library from a backup because all my backups contain flac files, so all of the metadata changes I made to other files are lost. Fingers crossed for a quick fix.

This user has the same problem, but reported that the freeze happened after adding new music files to his storage. Roon acts normal again, apparently, after the new files are deleted. Maybe this will help in your case too.
