Search is broken, it is indefensible

Thank you very much. That’s too bad. Hopefully, they got all the examples they need and it wasn’t closed because of an over abundance of vitriol.

What is clear is that use of the ‘filter’ function has become the workaround for the poor performance of the main search function. I guess this is because it provides the ‘exact match’ that is expected but missing from search.

I didn’t deny that search is not good !!. Roon have gone to the trouble of employing a search specialist to sort the issue for once and for all

What I meant was that search is not the only way to find what you want , it is in fact (at present) a bit of a blunt instrument and may still leave gaps no matter how good it is made compared to some of the custom screens.

What I was trying to point out was that once you know your way around the various screens in Roon there are much better and accurate ways of getting to an Album or Composition that using “Search” however good it may be in the future . For example the composition view

Each to their own , I was simply pointing out that even with a “dodgy” search engine I personally have no difficulty finding what I want

… but the composition view is utterly useless if you are searching for a work that isn’t in your library.

The search has got a lot better; it can get better again. It would be helpful if there was a new thread, like the old “….sucks” thread that was endorsed by Danny, and in which search problems could be posted without too much unnecessary discussion so that the new, clearly capable, search team can address them.

Another oddity: “Police on my back” is well known as a composition by Roon.
Searching for “police on my back eddy grant” brings no result…

Another one: looking for band She & Him, searching for “she and him” → no result.
Qobuz app gets it though…

I don’t think it’s helpful to say App X can do it unless that App is consolidating both a local Library (made up of Local files and pointers to streaming files) and a full search of one or two associated streaming services (Tidal and Qobuz) through their respective APIs.

We don’t really know if the Qobuz API returns it…

I have Qobuz. If I search Roon for “She and Him” the results don’t include “She & Him”, if I search for “She & Him” they do - indeed “She & Him” is the top result. Qobuz returns “She & Him” as the top result with either search. But I am finding that I am needing to use Qobuz to search less frequently now.

Sorry but it is helpful. If you can find album X or artist Y using either Tidals app or Qobuz app but not in Roon then is shows Roon has an issue and thier database is either missing chunks of said services library or search just isn’t working as it should. Roon doesn’t use the API to search it’s searching it’s own cloud database of Qobuz or Tidal library. In the She & Him example I had the artist as I had some albums already but could not see 3 albums in Qobuz but they all showed from Tidal. The albums are available in Qobuz and adding them via their app then added them to Roon. But there was no other way of finding those albums via Roon in Qobuz as far as it was concerned they didn’t exist under the artists discography. There are so many instances I have had that Roon can’t find same albums via it’s search in Qobuz. This shows there is some disconnect somewhere.

That’s fair, examples are helpful.

It might be helpful to properly focus in on the likely causes of your issue before launching a thread with such a blanket statement as it’s title.

Let’s look at a few pieces of helpful information:

Here you admit that your files were probably sourced from file sharing site or torrent online. This roughly translates to ‘I really don’t know what the metadata quality of the files may be’ If the files have poor metadata than can render them difficult to search and discover.

@ultrafud’s album is unidentified. This is a huge obstacle that has nothing to do with Search. If Roon has been told to use Roon metadata, by default, (in Settings>Library> import settings) and the album is unidentified then it’s more or less invisible.

On the other hand, the album has been favorited (heart symbol in circle). Which kind of makes everything else a moot point. The OP has taken a step toward solving his problem.
All that should be required is to go to the albums page in Roon, press the favorites button and Love Train will appear there. If the favorite button in not being used, why?

Finally, and most importantly:

The best remedy to the issue is to identify those albums in your library.

To do that, use Focus>Inspector>Unidentified and follow these directions.

It’s going to be some work but it’s the proper course of action and one that will solve your problem. Complaining that search is broken without making the effort to identify the albums in your library isn’t going to get you very far when it comes to finding the music you want to enjoy.

Noticed any improvements with the new build 898?

@alec_eiffel the She & Him case reported this morning here is being tracked and isn’t a search functionality issue.

This is related to other factors that are being tracked and investigated. We appreciate your patience as we get this cleared up.

  1. I added my own metadata so it really is irrelevant what the original metadata was or not. The search should reflect on the present metadata, which as you can see from the image you quote, is correct.

  2. Loads of albums are not able to be identified by Roon. This is not a resolveable as Roon does not allow you to mark an album as “identified”, even if you manually input the metadata yourself.

  3. Whether an album is “identified” or not should have no bearing on the search function, particularly as so many albums are not identifiable.

Regardless of everything you said, a search for X should discover X, no matter what other factors are present. This isn’t a case of me simply complaining without trying to resolve it. I shouldn’t have to resolve it, it’s an issue at your end.

And I will say your “reason” is particularly annoying as a large percentage of my library (at least a few hundred albums in a library of 5k+) are unidentifiable according to Roon - and I HAVE tried to identify them in software. If albums are invisible because they aren’t identified (according to you this is the case) then that is an insane way to treat albums.

Not only that, there should be a way to mark something as identified if I manually input the correct metadata OR Roon needs to scrape better metadata services (if there are any) that actually catch half the things I listen to, but again, that is an issue on YOUR end not mine.

And again, it should have nothing to do with search anyway. The fact that something gets ignored by search in Roon for any reason, is bad. Really bad.

Classic Roon, this!

Wasn’t Roon’s slogan “Roon knows your music” or something like that?

Bottom line is that Roon “knows” sweet Fanny Adams and all failures to deliver are someone else’s fault, either a third party’s or Roon’s hobby horse: it’s the user’s fault.

The worst of it all is that countless users not only accept this uncouth behaviour but that they even support it.

Shame on the Roon staff.

Hi @Frank_Daman,

The fact of the matter is that we’re doing quite a lot to improve search in Roon. Another build was just released today to further that work.

This user’s problem isn’t a search problem, it’s a metadata and library identification problem. One I tried to help with and clarify above.

Furthermore, your propensity to have a go at Roon staff has been discussed with you many times has it not? We’re going to kindly request AGAIN that you observe the conduct guidelines of our Community if you would like to continue to participate here.

Hi @ultrafud,

I apologize if my post earlier offended you, that wasn’t my intention. I simply wanted to clarify that the cause of your difficulties aren’t search related. They more likely come down to your Library settings, the quality of your metadata tags, and the fact that your albums aren’t identified.

Please feel free to submit a support thread for your issue if you’d like more assistance. Our use the link below to identify your albums.

Thanks!
