Showing (off) your Roon setup - description and photos [2024]

My Meridian doesn’t get played anymore either but when it does get played it sounds just fine. I still mourn the loss of my Meridian 508.24 CD Player. I broke the bank to buy it! Once I listened to it, I fell instantly in love with the way it sounded, but I knew I couldn’t afford it! So I went to all the audio stores I could find (there were lots at that time) to find a player I could afford that sounded as good. But I couldn’t find one! So I took a chance on a used one via eBay. Even so, it was still expensive, but very much worth it because it sounded wonderful. I’ll always wonder if buying it used was a mistake; maybe it had been heavily used before I bought it and it’d still be playing if I’d bought it new, The unanswerable!

I wonder if someone could fix it these days.

I visited a local audio repair shop - and he was repairing all kinds of stuff where the parts were no longer available. He said he though he could fix most things - except not microprocessor controlled stuff.

So you might be lucky.

a 500 transport would be useful to have, as would a 504. I sold mine years ago.

I eventually upgraded the 506 to a 508, and then the 508 to a 508.24. I worked for a Meridian dealer at the time, so such things were easier.

the 551 became a 502 preamp and 557 power amp. I loved that system, but when I began to transition to computer/network audio, and needed a separate DAC, it felt like too many boxes, so I began to switch things around.

not sure that was the wisest choice.

That was exactly my end combination, was bought by a Chinese student at the local Uni and exported to his UK audio obsessed Dad back in China… really wish I had kept that 508.24!

It’s the drawer mechanism that has failed in my Meridian player. It’s a fairly common failure in CD and DVD players and Phillips (I think it was Phillips) stopped making the replacements.

I am living with an Ayre DX-5 DSD SACD player with my fingers crossed. It uses the drawer mechanism that Oppo used for its BDP-83SE. Any time an Ayre player came in with a drawer failure Ayre would order a replacement from Oppo. Nearly a year ago while I was in the process of buying the demo Ayre product which uses the Oppo drawer mechanism, Oppo notified Ayre they were out of replacement parts, thereby terminating their agreement to continue supplying the parts to Ayre! Luckily I happen to be the owner of an Oppo BDP-83SE DVD player. I will hope I never need to harvest the part from my 83SE, but if I need one at least I have a replacement.

I searched diligently for a couple of years hoping to find someone who could repair it, but had zero luck. I eventually replaced it with another expensive player a Triode TRV-CD5SE CD player with an option to use a tube supplement. It’s a beautiful player and sounds wonderful. Sadly, I never play it anymore because I am relying almost entirely on streaming to listen to music.

It does look great!

for me, CDs are just music install discs now.

Same for me. I almost never buy a new CD anymore because it only has to be good enough for a perfect rip. I buy my used CDs via Amazon, eBay or Discogs and they are very often at bargain basement prices. No wonder CD sales are down.

If I buy an album nowadays it is always from the Qobuz shop. So CD or hi-res FLAC, depending on which is available.

I’ve bought my Cambridge CD transport with a 20% discount and it completes my CX2 stack. But it does not get much playtime as I have ripped all my discs.

I’ve taken a break from QOBUZ for awhile so I can spend more time with my own albums, of which I have enough to keep me busy for years and years. But when I had Qobuz I couldn’t find a way to purchase any of their CDs. How do you do that?i

Not CD’s, downloads.
You can find their Download Store here:

I meant CD FLAC or hi-res FLAC. Qobuz doesn’t sell physical discs. :slightly_smiling_face: They even have DSD these days.

But you have digital inputs on it. You can connect streamers to it and use it’s analog stage.

This is fun! Newly refurbished Marantz 2230 in newly constructed shed. Wiim pro plus streamer gets Roon from TP-Link ethernet adapter into Tape input. Speakers are 1-liter ported cabinets with Mark Audio CHP-70 drivers. I have a Schitt dac I might add, but it sounds great just like it is.

sweet. I have a 2230 in a closet downstairs; where’d you get yours refurbed?

looks like you’re well equipped to build your own W22 case.

I had two guys recommended for the job - one in Florida and one in Pennsylvania. I’ll send you contact info in a message.
