Does anyone know how to ssh Raspi running the VitOS? It doesn’t work via

ssh root@IP

I’d like to check the temperature of the CPU

@Paul_Jeno root password is root as someone recently let me know after trying dozens of passwords and neglecting to try that.

I am currently using Ropiee but waiting to to make some time to test the latest VitOS early next week.
I really didn’t hear anything different, but that could just be my older ears :wink:

It may take a little while to login…be patient.

You’re welcome to use my script to check the CPU temperature. Use these commands to install it:

Hello Mike,

interesting, I immediately heard a difference when I switched from RopieeeXL to VitOS. To me, Raspi running Vitos let the sound to become more transparent, highs were more pronounced, something I like anyhow. I am more leaning towards a lean sound, rather than an oomph-bass type of sound. Many listening to my system say, it’s on the lean side side and rather bright. But that’s the way I like it. I had to search for a long time to get my system together that suits my ears best. And VitOs really was the last little bit!

Interestingly, when ssh-ing, the system didn’t even ask for login credentials. Strange. I’ll try tomorrow.

@Paul_Jeno I am now using the latest VitOS from a couple of weeks ago.
Besides the real time kernel extensions most of the distribution will be very similar between systems.
Both work well and always happy moving back and forth between them.

Thanks for your scripts. I tried them out. At least I am able to ssh the Raspi running VitOS.

But when I run the command (curl -LO [ws-e.com/cpu-temp]) it fails to download the script from the site and throws an error

curl: (60) SSL certificate problem

Hi Paul I took a look and it looks like the file has been moved.
Try using this command
curl --insecure -LO http://ws-e.com/cpu-temp

Remember to do the chmod +x cpu-temp

Ah, you can run into that problem with SSL if the date is wrong on your Raspberry Pi. You can set the date manually with something like this:

# date 122120082020.01
Mon Dec 21 20:08:01 UTC 2020

…where the format for providing the time is: MMDDhhmmCCYY.ss

A more precise way to do this would be to use NTP. You can do that by running these commands:

# pacman -Sy
# pacman -S ntp
# ntpdate -b pool.ntp.org
21 Dec 20:20:36 ntpdate[506]: step time server 66.220.9.122 offset +6833159.119951 sec

Once you’ve got the clock set properly on your VitOS RPi4, the curl command I gave will work just fine.

# curl -LO ws-e.com/cpu-temp

This works too…and I suppose is a bit easier than fixing the date. Thanks. :slight_smile:

@David_Snyder I have been bitten by this raspberry pi time issue many times before, but I actually forgot it this time when answering Paul’s request :wink:

Checked the date on my Raspi 4, Mike, and as you suspected, it was wrong. Ran your commands and, voilà, the date now is corrected!

@Paul_Jeno I may be a pro at something’s but Raspberry pi are not on the list (though I can Google with the kids and have 30 years of Unix on my side).

To be fair it was @David_Snyder who suggested the time was the reason, I just went straight to the workaround :wink:

I have only really got into the Room endpoint ecosystem since March and lockdown started and I have learned so much from the community, that now I am just trying to contribute some of the knowledge I have learned back to other people who are getting started.
Continue to enjoy the journey.

30 year of Unix is quite something!

I remember very well when we had our first workstation. It had a GUI, but most of the file managing had to be done in Unix. We really had to go the hard way to learn it, at a time when there were no ‘Unix for Dummies’ available :sweat_smile: Luckily, after a while, the University hired a few Unix cracks so that I didn’t have to bother with all that gobbledegook anymore!

And what now? The past catches up with me, in the form of a Raspberry Pi :rofl:

But it’s interesting to see how such a tiny device is capable of producing fantastic results! I used to have an Aurender N100H that cost over 3000 Euros and the soundstage was not much better at all. And all those high flying streamers only have micro devices at their innermost parts!

The linear power supply that I ordered for my Raspi arrived today. Of course I hooked it up immediately. I had the impression as if the sound stage improved a bit, not much, but audibly. But the major leap in improvement was when I replaced the SMPS from my SonicTransporter with an LPS. That was quite some improvement!

I’ll post pictures tomorrow.

Paul I remember those days fondly. I had a wonderful range of Sun workstations over a 10 year period (from about 1991), they really were the best devices a person could use.

I find the Pi’s quite different in some ways but have probably purchased 10 or so since buying the first one a couple of weeks after release, but the Pi 4 is a big step up and I now have 2 headphone listening positions set up and both fed by Pi’s. At the moment both into relatively budget DAC amps but I am starting to look further upmarket for next year.

Here two pictures of the linear power supplies and the Raspi. The LPS to the left, displaying 11.8 V, feeds the SonicTransporter i5 (with a 2 TB SSD), while the right one (5.12 V) feeds the Raspberry Pi 4. Of course, an adapter is required for the USB-C power supply socket. The Raspi is tucked away somewhat carelessly in the maze of the cables at the rear of the HiFi rack. I should get a decent casing, like the Flirc. I’ll order one after Xmas.

Paul thanks for the photos, the Flirc cases are good, I have two for my headphone Pi’s, just remember to use the heat sinks as they can get warm running, though the Flirc has one for the processor.

Paul are you saying you got a noticable improvement from the output from the Pi with the LPS or the Devialet with the LPS?

Probably the reason why you hear a big improvement with VitOS is probably the quality of your kit. I am running two low end headphone DAC Amps and relatively happy with them, but I imagine you’re Devialet picks up much more nuance in the small output differences.

For the heatsinks: I already have a heatsink mounted on the CPU. Do you say the Raspi fits into a Flirc even with the heatsink mounted onto the CPU? As far as I know, the Flirc case has some sort of a heatsink attached to the lid that touches the CPU.

Also, do you add heatsinks to the WiFi, LAN and USB chips?

After having seen this thread, I had RopieeeXL running on my Raspi, and the Raspi was powered by its stock power supply. I then switched the Raspi to VitOS, still with its stock power supply. I noticed better and cleaner highs with VitOS. Therefore, the difference I heard was caused by switching from RopieeeXL to VitOS, because the power supply and everything else was the same.

Swapping the Raspi’s stock power supply to the new linear power supply didn’t bring about any change in SQ. So it’s only cosmetics :grinning:

What did make quite a difference, though, was the replacement of the SonicTransporter’s SMPS with an LPS. The difference was remarkably good!

For the moment, I needed to tidy up things as the Xmas tree was moved into our living room! I tidied up the cables and I feed the Devialet straight with Ethernet (one of the very few devices with Ethernet/DAC connectivity). The 5 V LPS is now powering the Ethernet switch. Also a nice setup! Ethernet mode is incredibly clean and it works beautifully with Roon. After Xmas, though, back to VitOS!
