I’m a minimalist in most facets of life. However, Roon is my one and only hobby now and I do have a few listening alternatives, none very elaborate:
Three servers include Nucleus, Mac Mini (late 2014), and Dell XPS 15 with three lifetime subscriptions.
Nucleus feeds three at home listening alternatives plus Roon ARC. Mac Mini is backup to Nucleus but also tends my Nucleus using Splashtop when I’m away from home to keep Roon ARC active. The Dell is my main control device at home and server when away from home.
At home, I use Focal Clear headphones with RPi4 and Chord Mojo 2, Bose Soundtouch 300 with Oppo 203, and Pioneer HPM-60 speakers with RPi4, Meridian Prime, and Denon AVR-2805. Away from home, its Focal Clear headphones, RPi4, and Chord Mojo 2 using Verizon Wireless cellular data from iPhone and two iPads (plus wife’s iPhone when needed).
I bought my second Roon lifetime subscription to keep Roon ARC active on Nucleus when away from home using my Dell server. The third lifetime subscription came about just for ease of use keeping all three servers active and in sync at all times.
I stream from Tidal and Qobuz with no local files. And, I have a pair of Sony WH-1000XM3 headphones for walking Lucy. I use an Audio Quest Dragonfly Cobalt DAC or FiiO KA1. Headphone cables are Moon Audio Black Dragon for Focal Clear and Silver Dragon for Sony.
I also have an Apple Music subscription provided for free by Verizon Wireless as well as a Sirius XM subscription, mostly for my wife and long trips. I use Soundiz to keep Apple Music in sync with Tidal and Qobuz.
I’ve spent around $7,000 on Roon not counting on-going subscriptions to Tidal (US$120), Qobuz (US$130), Soundiz (US$36 ), and Splashtop (US$17). I already owned some of the equipment such as Dell XPS 15, Oppo 203 and Bose system and a neighbor gave me the Denon AVR.
