Various iPhone/iPad connection issues after latest build (1352) [Investigating]

FWIW, I am quite sure that you (and other affected people) must be triggering some additional thing somehow, because I also use an iPad Pro 12.9 (2022 in my case, M2) on iOS 17.1.1 regularly on my evenings. I also put the iPad to sleep for a longer time, e.g. 30 mins or shorter or longer, and I also have the forum open in Safari all the time and tend to switch back and forth. But although our patterns seem very similar, I haven’t triggered the issue yet as far as I recall or know - I did have to restart the remote once (not the whole iPad) because some pictures weren’t loading, but that really was just once and not anything like what you are enduring. And of course I can’t be sure whether this one time was the same issue.

This is good to hear. The most difficult bugs to fix are the ones that appear in certain conditions. I am in the software business, and I deal with such issues every day, not easy. This is why I do describe my usage as detailed as possible… but again your usage is similar.
Example is that I almost posted the issue is solved, as today most of the day the issue did not appear. But it started again in the evening.
And this can lead to external factors, like I already said in another thread - server load on the other end (cloud API calls), latency, and what not.
All I know my environment and usage has not changed, only Roon version changed.

Yeah, these bugs are pesky things if they can’t straightforwardly be reproduced in the lab. I am in software support in real life, so I also know all too well, unfortunately

I applaud you for spending so much effort providing the info that you have, so please take my response in the same spirit - just trying to help narrow it down by adding my experience as it seems so similar.

I’ve been on the lookout in the various mobile connection and “Roon is slow” threads since the update but I haven’t been able to spot a pattern on the surface. Mind, I’m not getting paid for this, so I didn’t do it exhaustively and didn’t write tables, so take it with the proverbial grain of salt, but I think the remote issues has been reported for iOS (phone and pad) and Android, and servers seem to cover the range from Windows to Mac to ROCK to Nucleus, as far as I could tell. (Not sure about Linux, I was distracted by reports about fixed memory leaks on Linux, so there’s at least something positive  )

Could be anything from cloud to something in the local network that the new version trips over, some library properties, or something entirely different. Let’s hope the Roon guys figure it out with some more rigorous analysis…

I only experienced the issues the 1st time yesterday, but I got all the reported issues.
After rebooting my Roon server ( on Audiolinux) all was fine again. Of course I also stopped and restarted Roon Remote on my iPad.
I did however not reboot my iPad.

@Suedkiez and @Dirk_De_Taey
I have done my due dilignet investigation, and at this point I am at the hands of Roon.
I rebooted everything, all my network infrastructure, all my clients.
At one point I was suspecting that the issue was when my iPad was roaming from one mesh point to another. It wasn’t. Issue can be reproduced even when connected to the main router.
And my house is huge, 300 sqm multi-level two household (one for parents), I have 5 routers in mesh, same model. The one to parents is wired. Roon server is wired to main router, as are my end points. All with CAT6. All 4 TVs can stream 4K content without any issue. My up/down speed is 300Mbps on optical.
It was easy to get decieved at some point the issue is gone. For example, I moved my library to bigger SSD. The issue did not happen for hours on end… Then all of a sudden it will start again.
All this points me to believe it is an external issue, because the fact remains - there was no issue before the update.

Edit: And one thing uncommon that other people had, is that I never had any issues streaming to ARC outside of my home, original quality 192/24. Not a single hicup. Only album art did not load sometimes.

And I also applaud you for the energy and time spent. I had to wonder how you get the time for all your involvement on this board, and I am only recenlty involved with Roon…

I understand how frustrating it must be having to deal with these issues on a daily basis.
The good news for you (and of course everybody else who is faced with these issues), is that @noris is looking into things.
Always great support from him👏

I also have had a working ARC for considerable time. There’s a difference: My network is simple, one router, one wifi AP that’s just a few meters away

That is understandable. But when I sit few meters away from my main router, the issue is still there. And I did analyse this issue when all are in the house and using the network, and when I am the only one using the network. Still, the problem is there
Once again, you are relentless in your dedication to helping on this borad. Kudos!

Edit: not sure if I mentioned, all my routers are AC3000 with 3 bands, and there is not a single issue in any other app or service.

Hi @Ciaran_Henry,

We have a specific question to pass on from QA:

Do you have the Roon GUI component installed on your RoonServer Windows 11 PC as well? If so, do you ever experience these poor connectivity errors on that machine, running as an all-in-one Roon/RoonServer?

Hi Connor

I do have the Roon GUI component installed and running but I do not use that server machine ever as a player or remote so cannot say if there are errors. It is upstairs from where my sound system is located. Thanks for looking at this

Best

Ciaran

I just had a glitch at 18h26 CET.
Album display fell away complete, but came up again almost immediately

Thank you @Ciaran_Henry and @Dirk_De_Taey, this information is very helpful. We’re continuing to investigate this issue.

Just experienced issues tonight at 23.58 uk time
No album covers and currently playing list froze

One more data point. My iPad was experiencing the issues frequently today so I used a MacBook Air M1 as remote instead and it was issue free as I expected.

Today, just now, 16:47 CET/10:47 EST, Home Screen would load only up to recent activity bar, and get stuck for at least a minute (abandoned). Could start playing the queue, though.
iPad 9th gen, latest iOS.

Are people on this thread still having the same issues ?

Has support contacted any of you direct ?

Yes Steve - same issues here and Connor from Roon has been in touch with some questions so I think it is under investigation

I am continuing to face issues (reported in this same thread last week) with Roon remote on iphone and ipad, especially on my wife’s iphone. Roon opens but then freezes and clcking on anything does not help. Only solution is to delete and reinstall app and then it uses for a few times until it freezes again. Hugely frustrating. Thanks for advising what the problem is.

Same issues here. Roon Server 2.0 (build 1353) production (64 bit) on Windows 10 latest patches with both Roon Remote 2.0.01352 on iPhone and iPad, latest updates. The Apps open and keep “Connecting…” forever. The server shows the remotes in Audio section when trying to connect, but nothing more. Restarting server or remotes doesn’t help. Last try today 8/12/2023 20:00 CET.
