What type of TV for Roon?

Hello,
I need to upgrade my TV. What type of smart TV should I choose to be able to stream Roon’s display? Does it need to have a built-in Chromecast? Does the system need to be Android TV? In short, what are the requirements?
Thanks, everyone.

I don’t know if built-in Chromecast even works (search the forum, there might be threads about it). Chromecast HDMI dongles do, and they cost close to nothing used.

Otherwise, the other option are web browsers.

If you have an iPad (edit: and if the TV supports AirPlay, or you attach an Apple TV), you can also use AirPlay to share the device screen, but this is not the same as the Roon display. (It only does the iPad screen ratio. Upside is that you can choose to show the full Roon UI or just the Now Playing screen)

Today and especially with OLED you may also have to fight excessive built-in screen savers (power consumption regulations, preventing of burn-in). And there is this too:

You need a Chromecast device. TVs are not chromecast devices as they usually have modified the chromecast code. You can always just try it and see.

If it doesn’t work you can paste in the display url in the TV’s browser. Below is the FAQ on the subject.

TV browser may also be based on outdated technology or modified in other ways that makes em incompatible with Roon’s Display. You also have to try and see.

I would buy the TV or Beamer that works best for you for its visual (and audio) qualities. Add a current external player that provides what the TV/Beamer can’t. Such players are usually cheaper than the TV/Beamer and can be swapped out if updates are no longer coming which may also allow you to keep the TV/Beamer longer (you swap/add a current external player instead of the TV/Beamer if needed).

The browser on my TV (a 4K Panasonic from about 4 or 5 years ago) is also incompatible with the Roon Display.

However, I have my DIetPi Roon Server physically close to my TV and connected to it using HDMI. This allows me to run Chrome on the Roon Server and select the relevant HDMI input on the TV.

Note: On my system, for this latter setup, I have to remember to have the TV turned on and the RoonServer HDMI input selected whenever I power on or reboot the Roon Server computer (running DietPi). If I forget to do this the HDMI subsystem is not correctly configured and nothing will subsequently appear on the TV screen until I reboot the Roon Server with the TV turned on.

On the other hand - my six year old Sony is seen as a Chromecast display by Roon, and works fine… :man_shrugging:

Most OS’s on TV suck, forget the software, and get yourself an Apple TV 4K Gen 2 (128GB if you need Ethernet). The system is far superior, and you can screen mirror the phone if you have an iPhone. Even if you don’t have an iPhone, an Apple TV is well worth the investment.

Just a recommendation.

Choose the TV that fits your other needs and add a cheap Fire TV stick. Roon display works great with the browser of the Fire TV stick. And without the need of an iPhone or other third device.

Just last week I used a Nvidia Shield Pro to cast to from Roon to my new Samsung. I would think this would work on all TVs.

Since you’re purchasing a new TV, I can relay my experience. I recently purchased a large Hisense TV that is nominally based on a Google OS - not sure how it relates to Chromecast. The TV is recognized by Roon as an audio device. The digital sound from the Roon server (shows up on the TV as a “Roon” app while music plays) or from any native TV app also serving video, can be set in the TV’s Settings to “Pass Through” the TV without modification (remote volume keys are also bypassed, but Mute functions), and I feed the TV audio over optical to my preamp (which has its own DAC). The TV can also be set as Roon’s video device for album art during a track. The audio quality sounds just like when my audio streamer is used as the audio device. The TV also has Apps for YouTube Music, Tidal and Amazon Music, but these are very limited compared to computer-based apps. This is an excellent way to go – in fact, I’m wondering why I even have the audio streamer.

I bought a 4K “dumb” TV from Sceptre this year and connected an Apple TV to it. I use the TV:Remote app on that and it works great.

Before that I had a Gen1 Chromecast connected to my Sony TV, which also worked well. Blogged about connecting those at Adding a 1st Gen Chromecast as a Roon display.

Best answer. I rarely use the Roon display on my OLED TV (why would I bother when it’s already displaying on the tablet?), but it works just fine. The Shield is just an all-around good device to have, as so many things can be side-loaded and give me capabilities that fruit-named brand can never offer.

Both of my Sony TV’s (about 3 years old) appear in the Roon Displays section in set up and work perfectly with Roon
(SONY XBR-77A9G) and (SONY KD-65X80J)

I believe Sony tv’s have Chromecast built-in, not all of their models though. Just Google before you buy.

My LG G2 Oled displays Roon output via a Chromecast Ultra.
Leaving my tablet to display other musical info.
Its a nice big (55 " ) to show lyrics.

I use my SKY box which supports Cromecast. this is convenient because the Sky box is central to all of our TV watching and functions.

We have two TVs, a Sony XBR and an LG. Roon casts to the Sony. Roon cannot cast to the LG. It’s an LG issue.

I use JRiver as a general HTPC/Media Center setup for watching TV, Films etc.

With that application I can launch the Chrome browser in Kiosk Mode showing the Roon display full screen. As others have said though I also have an OLED TV and it would switch off after 15 mins or so of inactivity (or whatever I have it set to on the TV or in Windows).

I can use a portable application called “Caffeine” to stop it from going to sleep but then (after about 30mins) I also get a bit paranoid about screen burn. :man_shrugging:

My solution is a bit geeky I agree…
