Description of Issue

I have my Marantz AV8802a Preamp/Processor hooked up via HDMI to my Roon Core (Intel NUC10i7FNH running ROCK)

When playing any 5.1 channel FLAC files 24 bit/88.2 khz or above (surround sound DVD-A rips for example), there is consistent stuttering in playback. If I have Roon downmix these same 5.1 source files to stereo, they play without issue.

These same files used to play flawlessly in the exact same setup (on an earlier version of Roon). I don’t listen to my 5.1 system often so I cannot correlate a recent Roon update to the problem. I would estimate the last time I listened to the same files without issues was 3 months ago. I have not made any notable network changes or endpoint changes since the files were playing without stuttering.

To hopefully rule out networking, I transferred sample files to the internal storage on the NUC and the problem stayed the same.

I also want to rule out data rate as Roon is able to play the files without issue if they are converted on the fly to stereo (which I would think would be more taxing than just playing the files outright).

No firmware updates have been installed on the Marantz AV8802a since the problem started

I can play 24 bit, 192khz stereo files without any issues. Both locally on the NUC and over the network.

24 bit, 48khz, 5.1 files also do not stutter (at least that I can audibly hear).

Troubleshooting so far:

  • Reboot NUC
  • Change HDMI cables (tried 3 different cables)
  • Hook up to different endpoint, SR7010
  • Transfer test files onto internal storage of NUC (Samsung SSD)
  • Turn HDMI CEC off in NUC BIOS
  • Turn HDMI CEC off in Marantz AV8802a
  • Downmix 24bit, 96khz, 5.1ch files to stereo via Roon Device settings (files play without issue)

I also just tried converting the sample rate via Roon DSP. If I convert the 5.1 24bit 88.2khz source from it’s native 88.2khz to 44.1 khz, playback is solid. If I convert 88.2khz to 176.4 khz, the stuttering gets notably worse which leads me to believe this is a bandwidth issue somewhere. I have no other zones playing music and Roon is able to process the sample rate conversions without issue (4.7x processing speed to convert from 88.2 to 176.4 khz on all 6 channels)

Also, I just tested a physical DVD-A disc via my Oppo BDP-105 Blu-ray player to make sure there isn’t an issue with the input format and the Marantz AV8802a. I tested the same song from the disc vs. my DVD-A rip of that same disc and the disc plays flawlessly at 24bit/96khz/6ch whereas Roon stutters.

When you connected your SR7010, did this also have the same issue? It is not clear from your post if this endpoint is also impacted.

This is going to sound strange, but do you happen to have a TV connected to the Marantz and turned on. Possibly with some USB powered device connected to the TV.

This is just a shot in the dark but I had severe stuttering years ago that was caused by the TV trying to draw power from the HDMI connection when the USB device was connected to the TV. It was with any music, not just Hi-res or MC.

I know it sounds crazy but disconnecting the USB device from the TV connected to my Denon receiver resolved the issue. And it hasn’t happened since.

Hey Mike, thanks for response. During troubleshooting I tested with no display and still had stuttering. Prior to trying no display, I tried just a TV. I tried just a computer monitor (via HDMI). I also tried just a projector.

I have made no display changes (TV, projector, or otherwise) or peripheral changes (additional AV equipment) to my system between when 5.1 surround was working flawlessly and when stuttering started. The only change has been Roon updates. Even the firmware on my Marantz AV8802a hasn’t been updated.

I have the exact same issue. Severe dropouts and distortion over NUC HDMI connected to Oppo-UDP 205. Same happens if I connect directly to my Marantz SR7010. Reported in the below thread.

Thanks for posting. I checked out the audio sample you recorded and it sounds like your issue (which could quite possibly be related/the same as mine) is causing several seconds dropouts with silence for you. In my case the audio never stops, it just stutters as if it can’t keep up to realtime.

Additionally, the example in your post is stereo (2 channel) whereas I am only getting audible stuttering with 5.1 content at or above 24bit 88.2khz.

We both are using a Intel NUC10i7FNH. How much RAM do you have in your NUC? I have 16GB. I would think we would have identical problems if you also have 16GB of RAM.

Mine is 16GB as well.

I initially thought it was limited to 5.1 content as I don’t use the HDMI output for stereo content normally. But recently I discovered the same issue with stereo and the dropouts are something I am only noticing recently. When I first discovered it was just bad stuttering and distortion. I will try playing content below 24bit 88.2khz (doubt if I have any though). Also try your downmix suggestion and see if I have the same behaviour as yours.

But as you have pointed out this just started happening out of no where. So other than Roon OS and Server software, I wonder what else could have changed at the NUC level. Don’t think the BIOS auto-updates.

Thank you for that additional information. @zenyatta80 - Yes, please do confirm if this issue is related to the sample rate played, it is strange that you are seeing it on 2ch content.

Do either of you have another PC around that you can install Roon on that has HDMI output? Are you also able to reproduce the issue there or is it limited to the NUC HDMI output?

Hi @noris I do not have a spare Windows or Linux machine. I did attempt to use a Macbook running Roon Bridge and a Macbook running Roon Remote via the Thunderbolt to HDMI adapter but I could not obtain 5.1 channel output as it appears output is limited to 2 channel using OSX (others have reported the same here in the forum).

I recently ordered an HP T630 Thin Client which I intend to install Ubuntu and Roon Bridge on (a suggestion and proven 5.1 surround sound setup for another Roon user whom I connected with on Facebook in the “Roon Users” community group | Roon Users | Facebook). The Thin Client has not arrived yet, and when it does i’ll need some time to get it setup (My Roon tinkering time is scarce between work and kids!)

Do you or one of your colleagues have a NUC around that you could test playing 24 bit, 88.2 khz, 6 ch PCM files (or above) on running ROCK? While I’ll be happy if the Thin Client works, ideally I would prefer to keep my original simple setup of the NUC connected to my processor if possible.

Replied on the other thread.

Changing rsync delay didn’t help. I can also confirm issue only occurs for Multichannel audio above 48KHz.

I am also seeing the issue for 2ch DSF (24bit, 88.2KHz).

@noris @zenyatta80 I was able to get my new HP T630 Thin Client endpoint setup over the weekend thanks to the recommendation and instructions from @Ron_Witkamp (related post: Roon Bridge - Project)

The new HP T630 endpoint is working flawlessly, I’ve tested up to 24bit 192khz 6ch FLAC. No stuttering at all.

Hopefully this information helps @noris and the Roon team troubleshoot why @zenyatta80 and I get stuttering via the NUC HDMI output with anything over 24bit 48khz 6ch on our Intel NUC10i7FNH running ROCK when I am able to get stutter free playback using the HP T630 Thin Client endpoint running Roon Bridge with the same files that cause the NUC problems.

Great. Hopefully that helps them isolate. I am resorting to a lossy set up for the time being to at least be able to enjoy Mch. Not ideal.

Great album btw. Only Dire Straits Mch afaik.

Hi All,

If you are still seeing this issue, can you please confirm the BIOS version that you are on? If you try to update your ROCK BIOS, does it still occur? There was a patch for NUC11 that may also be applicable to NUC10 BIOS updates, I would check this:

My other theory here would be to check the AVR to see if “HDMI Passthrough” or a similar setting is toggled.
