Hello everyone, i have a t&a dac200 which ist connected via USB to an Intel nuc which Acts as roon core. It can upsample to dsd512 and this works flawlessly with the dac200. Downside ist the noise of the nuc so i would Like to put it further away. With the u2 mini can i upsample via Roon to dsd512 and send via Ethernet to the u2 mini which sende it natively to the dac 200. Will this work? Is u2 mini Linux based? What should I expect from the sq compared to the first Setup. There ist now a pathway more.

Yes I believe DSD512 should work with DAC200, although I don’t recall having received a user confirmation of it. Lumin product line is indeed Linux based.

Hello Peter,

I have a Lumin A1 for a long time. Used to connect it to my Lampi Golden Atlantic DAC via BNC/RCA digital cable.

Bought a Lumin U2 Mini recently to try Roon DSD upsampling. Reason being the old A1 does not have USB out to my Lampi for DSD playback.

So I connected both USB and BNC to my lampi. When i am in the mood for just native without upsampling and BNC playback, i need to physically disconnect USB before signal can flow from U2 to my Lampi. Any workarounds?

Also, i realised that BNC connection (alone) through both A1 and U2 mini, the A1 one sounds more meaty, fuller and separation and sounstage much better than U2. The tones also sound more correct and decay seems better in the A1. So my question, could the LPS of the A1 be the reason? If so, i do not mind upgrading my U2 Mini with a Plixir LPS.

The reason i ask is because i feel like selling the A1 now that i have the U2. But something bugs me about selling as i find the BNC digital outpit of the A1 superior.

If you can help answer this, i will be truly grateful. Thank you.

I will prepare a beta firmware for you so that you can switch this in the Lumin app.

Possibly.

This voids warranty.

Thank you Peter. Much appreciated for being so supportive as usual.

Thanks. Works like a charm. Nuc has now 1.6x Speed upsampling qobuz to DSD512 with u2 mini as streamer. Very happy. Next Upgrade probably the Big Brother u2 (2024). :joy:

Thanks for the confirmation of Lumin native DSD512 playback to T+A DAC200.

Please tell me the model of NUC you’re using.

And secondly,

Do you notice any SQ difference from using U2 Mini vs the direct NUC USB output?

Definately a big upgrade with the U2 mini in place. A streamer was long overdue.

Better timbre, dynamics, and attack, less noise means bolder dark background. Everything, specially lower end has more precision and a bit more control compared to the nuc.

U2 Mini is now connected via a Ansuz D2 USB to the DAC200. Incredible. (Yes.. USB cables can make a significant difference when the rest of the system is of similar quality). So probably when time passes I will move up the lumin ladder but for now very happy with the u2 mini. Excited what the dedicated USB port and the linear power supply bring to the table.

Nuc also runs incredible hot and loud upsamling to DSD512. This way I was able to move it away from the rest of the hifi setup.

So far it runs very smoothly with no issues at all. I can recommend the u2 mini to everyone.

Btw: just tried out replacing the DAC200 with the luxman D-03X also via USB, DSD512 works to. It’s played and in the display of the luxman it says DSD 22.579 MHz. On the luxman site it says compatible to 11.2 MHz…(DSD256). For anyone interested in that combo..

Congrats on your Lumïn! I’m sure that both of those combos sound great. Next upgrade should be to the X1 :sunglasses:

Thanks. Keeping the DAC200, it is wonderful. So U2 or U1X. Any release schedule on the successor of U1X  ?

That’s very interesting. I’ll need to find another way to double confirm it.

Hi Marco,

I´m just diving into the Lumin world and since you use it with a NUC, I would have a quick question.

I´m looking to improve the sound on my rig by replacing my NUC7I7567U by a LUMIN U2 Mini,

I do have the NUC with an external Samsung SSD as storage connected by USB. The NUC is, in turn, connected to an Internet switch to the network and so is my DAC. Do I still need the NUC on the system? Won´t the LUMIN U2 mini replace the NUC completely?

If you’re already using Roon, I assume you’re using the NUC as Roon Core. Lumin is Roon Ready but not a Roon Core, so you still need the NUC as Roon Core even if you get a Lumin.

Thanks Peter for your answer, I did think so, but I was not sure.
I´m about to try it why a local dealer and wondered: what would you say that the improvements would be if I include the U2 Mini in my set up? The Lumin would work as a renderer instead of the NUC right?

Best

That’s setup dependent and you’d need to try it to know. About 9 posts above, a user who asked the same question and got his own answer - but his setup is likely not the same as yours. Lumin acts as a Roon Ready endpoint, playing music sent from NUC Roon Core via network. I’d rather not use the term “renderer” here as MQA renderer is a different thing, and is only possible with Lumin analog output products or MQA DAC.

The Lumin U2 mini would not produce a fully processed MQA file because the final part is DAC dependent. You still need an MQA DAC to produce the final fully ‘rendered’ result.

Thanks, I do use a NUC7I7567U as a Roon core and a Weiss 501 4ch DAC as ROON endpoint, I did expect to improve the SQ by adding the LUMIN U2 mini between them.
