Pro-Series iOS Phones Not Locking to 120FPS Refresh Rate [Ticket In: Affecting Pro-Series iPhones]

So my iPhone 15 Pro Max is here and yeah the scrolling is somewhat choppy even to my eyes. Clearly worse than in the iPad Pro M2 and not what one would expect from a top class device.

As others wrote in the recent posts, it’s not difficult to reproduce for me, either. Just give the page a quick push in Roon and let it scroll until it comes to rest. (I.e., the finger movement pattern does not seem to matter). Doing the same in e.g. Safari is super smooth (even scrolling through album covers in Google image search results is better) and it’s also clearly better in ARC.

On the other hand, some other apps I use feel similar to Roon, e.g. Discographic, which is a Discogs interface app, which therefore also deals with grids of album covers and text.

All in all, while I think it should be better, for me personally and at least on this super fast phone it’s also not the huge issue it was made out to be, particularly not if I use my usual scrolling habit in Roon instead of scrolling super fast through my whole collection in order to force the issue (and if I do, slow cache loading and initially grey covers are still a bigger issue for me as mentioned a few posts up). So with that I’ll try and stay out of this discussion from now on and leave it to those who are impacted more or feel more strongly about it

Usually scrolling from bottom to top is much worse as from top to bottom on all my iOS devices.

@support,

Is there any chance this is going to get fixed? We’ve had years of it now and no sign of a solution.

It seems clearly linked to variable refresh rate on the iPhone as it came in when that feature landed and is fixed by enabling screen recording (which forces 120Hz).

Any update from Roon?

Damn! I didn’t know this. What a difference! So the cause is pretty obvious, now fix it pretty please Roon

Hi everyone,

The team is aware of the issue and we’ve identified a likely fix. As other users have mentioned, Apple’s adaptive refresh limits the usual 120FPS rate on ProMotion-equipped iPhones. We need to retain the optimized framerate. Development has a ticket now.

Any Pro-series iPhone is affected.

We’ll post here once the ticket has proceeded through the pipeline and is slated for release.

FWIW I see choppy scrolling on the 15 Pro Max as well (and to a lesser extent on the iPad Pro M2 12.9), so if the issue you identified affects only 13 and 14 then it seems there is also another one.

It’s any ProMotion-equipped iPhone. The 13 Pro and 14 Pro are what we reproduced in-house. This likely won’t affect iPad Pros at all, since they do not limit the 120FPS frame rate with ProMotion from what we can tell.

Oh ok.

It’s much better on the iPad compared to the iPhone, and the mechanism differs, so I guess it’s not the same issue. It’s just that e.g. the Qobuz app on the same iPad with a similar view (like an album grid) scrolls noticeably more smoothly

Hi @Suedkiez,

We’re taking care to stress this observation with iPads as well as we revisit the issue - there’s room for improvement in scrolling, even at ideal frame rates.

Looking at the long and tortured history of iOS scrolling reports in this thread, the team simply wants to be as precise as possible when explaining both what we’ve reproduced and what we’re targeting with fixes. This helps prevent any miscommunication that exacerbates both troubleshooting and the user experience.

Thank you as always for your help!

Understood, thank you very much!

It was me who found the fix by turning on screen recording, found it totaly by accident as I was trying to record the choppy scrolling and noticed it fixed it,this scrolling isuue started with roon 1.8,I noticed it straight away after updating, people have been complaining for years now,in the end I cancelled my subscription as I found it ruined the experience on my iphone 13 max,the issue is still present on my ipad pro but it’s not as near as bad as the iphone, but still not as smooth compared to scrolling in the tidal app, there was also alot of Android users posting they were havin the same problem, this problem should be a easy fix especially on ios cause there only a small number of iphone compared to android,if roon ever get this fixed I’d be bck like a shot, but the choppy scrolling is total deal breaker for me

@connor i don’t have a pro device just a regular iPhone 13 which is only 60hz I stil get the choppy scrolling is this being looked at across the iPhone range or just pros?

@Simon_Arnold3, there were user complaints concerning scrolling at lower framerates before this particular regression and some aren’t happy with how Roon scrolls on iOS overall.

In this particular case, we’re fixing only an identifiable failure to lock the refresh rate at 120FPS on ProMotion-equipped iPhones. Improvements to scrolling behavior are more gradual evolution than punctuated equilibrium, and we’re not abandoning efforts to improve overall iOS scrolling behavior. This was the most recent target, but developers will fix any scrolling bug for which we can pinpoint reproduction steps.

Thanks for clarifying Connor.

FWIW i’m an irregular “scroller” but since the last update scrolling on my iPad 12.9 pro generation 3 has become much less smooth (More “Choppy”).

(Currently running iPadOS 17.4)…

Hi everyone,

This ticket has been moved and retitled to address the specific fix we’re implementing to allow Roon to operate at the higher frame rate on ProMotion-equipped iOS phones (Pro Series).

To report a support issue with iOS more generally, please create a new topic thread. Scrolling issues contain two components: the hand gesture, and the response within the app. Without both pieces of information, we’re often relegated to a blind fix. The more precise the report, the more actionable. In this sense, we are inherently limited by the imprecision of language.

We can investigate issues far more efficiently - and thus expedite the release of a potential fix - if we have a video of the scrolling behavior that includes the hand gesture. If you have the means, please take a video with another phone that includes the hand gesture causing the scrolling symptoms. You can request to share this privately via PM in your post and our team will reach out.
