Roon jumping randomly when streaming music from Tidal [See Staff Post]

I am using Google nest and it’s default DNS is the Google one (8.8.8.8). This morning, I changed my Roon core’s PC DNS through the windows control panel and set it to the Google DNS. Re-booted and did the same on my 2 other end point PCs, just to be on the safe side. I’ve been listening for the last 2 hours without a hitch, but saddly, the issue just started again a minute ago. I don’t believe this is a DNS issue.

Yes , up to date only with Tidal tracks.
By the way I’m from Quebec, Canada too …

Tried all the options: changed Tidal to HIFI, flushed DNS cache, set new DNS directly and no change. Still skipping like crazy.

Can someone from Roon Support please acknowledge that they are aware of this problem ?!?

They did, it took some time, but they finally did 7 hours ago.

I NOW see that this fault has been acknowledged … my apologies.

I’m encountering this as well since a few days back. It happens only for Tidal service, Roon/Qobuz is streaming fine without any network or streaming component power recycle needed.

I’m having the exact same problem. And like you it only started last week

Same problem. Skipping on Tidal. Tidal app plays back fine. Wired everything, never had issue before the last week.

Same here. I have a video of the path and skipping if that would help.
It seems to to be the MQA decoder.

Changing DNS didn’t improve anything for me, unfortunately. After some testing, I concur with others that it is either only present on MQA tracks or is significantly more noticeable on them. Either way, I’m only using the Tidal app right now because troubleshooting is less fun than listening to music.

2 days ago, I changed my DNS server and this got rid of the Roon/Tidal skipping issue. Unfortunately, I have to report that the skipping has returned. It is not as bad as last week, but still very annoying. Skipping will occur at any resolution format (Flac and MQA). Works fine with my ripped local content.

My Tidal music was skipping all the time since 2 days ago. I logged out in Roon settings and loggued in… and like magic… all is fine again…

I had 24 hours of fine streaming with the DNS fix but the skipping is back. Tidal still works fine through Moon Mind Controller and through the Tidal app.

@support

I can provide you with a video of the signal path when it skips.

The blue text below the AUTHENTICATION heading disappears each time the skip occurs.

Having the same issues in the US for the last two days. Tidal works fine on its own.

Yep. I’ve spent a couple of days troubleshooting to the best of my limited technical abilities (DNS changing, wi-fi versus ethernet, rebooting everything in the chain, etc) and Roon and Tidal are having irreconcilable difficulties and require marital mediation. Roon is working fine on its own in the mancave with their digital files and Tidal is happy as can be strutting around the living room dancing around to streamed tracks at the Hi-fi tier. But, I’m afraid that these two cannot currently coexist in the same software environment. It’s one or the other and I’m forced to choose which parent to live with. I’m stressed but remaining patient and optimistic that there’s a solution in the near future.

Is Qobuz integration with Roon working ok? I currently rely on Tidal integration with Roon. If Tidal cannot co-exist with Roon then perhaps I need to make a decision.

The music hops to another track or inside it? For me looks like a turntable that was shaked. Started today.

The problem is repeated via ethernet on Devialet and also via USB on the Yamaha CD s-3000 dac, both with tidal only. In the tidal app it is working normally, which leads me to believe that the problem is really in the communication between roon and tidal.

Hi All, just wanted to share a quick update.

We’ve been working on this for most of the past week. Unfortunately, we still have not been able to reproduce the issue, even once, regardless of account, location, streaming quality, etc. We’ve tried a lot of stuff.

We can definitely see some patterns. About half of the affected people are in Canada, most of them in Quebec, and about 95% are running Windows. Both of those are statistically significant and unexpected, which may help to narrow this down, even if a few people in other situations are seeing this too.

Our best guess right now is that TIDAL’s content distribution network is doing something new or different that confuses Roon. Since CDNs distribute data to many servers around the world, it’s not very surprising that there are regional patterns in the data. It may be that changing DNS shuffles which servers people are communicating with, and this is modulating the problem. It’s very unlikely that DNS changes are a permanent solution to something like this, however.

There is one thing that I could use some help with–a few people have given examples of tracks and time positions that caused trouble. This has been useful, but it would be very interesting to understand if other people affected by this issue can reproduce the same problems in the same tracks.

If and only if you are having issues in the past 24 hours, and you have a minute to help us investigate this, please:

  • If the skipping is reproducible for a particular track, please name the track, the audio format being played (check signal path), and time positions where problems are happening, as well as where you are located. We are going to try all of these to see if we can get one that works.

  • For others, try out the tracks that people have posted (double-check that the format matches) and note if the same problems happen at the same times.

In both cases, it’s really important that we focus on people who are currently experiencing this issue. If DNS or some other workaround has fixed you, or this problem has gone away on its own, please sit this one out, it will confuse the data  .

Thanks again everyone, and I’m sorry this is happening. We’ll get to the bottom of it.
