Showing (off) your Roon setup - description and photos [2023]

My new upstairs (spare bedroom) listening room for when the wife wants me out of the way.

Roon Nucleus downstairs in main bedroom ethernet to router
RPi4 connected by WIFI running RoPieeeXL
Meridian Prime Headphone Amplifier and Power Supply connected by USB as DAC/pre-amp
Denon AVR-2805 receiver connected by RCA as 2-channel amp (Pure Direct mode)
Pioneer HPM-60 4-way vintage speakers
Roon control via Dell XPS 15, iPhone 13 Pro Max, iPad Mini 6, or iPad 8th Gen
Headphone listening with Focal Clear or Sony WH-1000XM3

Command and Control Central…

EDIT: Loving these speakers. I dialed down the high frequencies a little with Roon EQ. I like not needing to use a sub for the bass. Buttery smooth.

I moved my chair forward a little to make a 7 foot equilateral triangle. Phantom sound source is perfectly centered.

Quote from Denon:

“In PURE DIRECT Mode, both the analogue High-Pass and digital Low-Pass are bypassed, however an analogue Low-Pass takes over, so in PURE DIRECT it is 100% analogue”

EDIT: I made these wooden stands…for free.

Nice. Those Pioneers remind me of a pair of Sansui speakers I owned many years ago, a 4-way 6 driver model. SP-3500 I think.

Such a great amp :ok_hand:

My main technical music area.

Denon X7200WA
Allround AVR with nice surround and stereo sound. Can be tweaked quite nicely, though a little bit old-fashioned :slightly_smiling_face:.

Denon DBP-2012UD
Multi-purpose CD, SACD, DVD, BR player. Used only with HDMI output. No complaints. Maybe the last optical player in my life .

NUC8i5BEH
Somehow an alien piece of PC. UEFI dual boot with ROCK and Windows 10. Don’t ask how I did it. IT in the 21st century can feel so… medieval .
Running dBpoweramp on Windows 10 for ripping and convoluting music files for car and mobile music.
And, as a roon endpoint, ROCK 258, with multi channel HDMI to AVR.
Altogether a rather fiddly but versatile and powerful combination.
Windows usually controlled by MS RDP from iPad :+1:t3:.

Plextor PX-760SA
Not used for more than 10 years. Still like new and fully functional, in a nice housing. Absolutely flawless.

Synology DS3617xs
This is what it all began with. I never wanted to run a dedicated computer to enjoy music. It runs roon 2.0 on DSM7. The NAS, for sure, is primarily used as a NAS. Fed with SSDs only. Almost 100% dead silent. Serves me very well.

Floor speaker Bowers & Wilkins CM7 plus CM1 and CM Center as 5.0 surround. Still a very nice combination I don’t want to miss :+1:t3:.

To be honest… getting it all running was… very… it ruined a VAST AMOUNT of my beloved neurons…

All together, pure love and hate

When I set up my Speakers, I set them up so that I cannot see either side of the cabinet so I know they are perfectly aligned…prolly not like that Laser Measurer, but @ $240, I like my manual method…All from the “sweet spot” of course…

There are cheaper alternatives which work very well…

Do you EQ those XM3:s? I find it makes a big improvement.

No, they work as is for me. I use Moon Audio Silver Dragon cables that might be why. I first tried Moon Black Dragon and they were way too much bass.

Here’s mine in a home I just moved in less than 10 days ago. Yeah, need to patch some walls holes I did too eagerly. Cables are still loose here and there as well.

Roon core is in the garage with the rest of the IT stuff. Front is the NAD D 7050 as DAC and preamp. Amp is NAD 218 THX. Speakers are JBL HDI 3600.

I will need to adapt on the impact to the high ceilings on the sound.

Most of the time I use the Surface I hung to the wall between dining and kitchen to control Roon.

How do you like those JBLs?

I love them. Super versatile in the range of musical genre they’re good at. Sweet spot is extremely forgiving and one thing I appreciate is that they’re equally good à 0 dB or -50 dB without ever losing any detail.

Hey Pablo, I was sorry to read that Audio Research is in receivership. I have always known them as one of The top quality Amplifier builders of my generation. The article did not refer to what happened to cause this…hopefully they can turn it around!``

out of curiosity, why not use the miniDSP as the Roon endpoint as well? if it’s transparent enough to pass the entire signal chain through, it might make the Innuos redundant.

You have dropped the Minimaist , any reason :smiling_imp:

Expansionist tendencies ?

Nope, it’s still pertinent. Even minimalist can own a pair of 50 year old speakers.

No second and third homes, airplanes, boats, swimming pools, sports cars, race cars, motorcycles, bicycles, second cars, sports equipment, expensive power tools, etc. all of which I owned in a previous life.

I get nagged if I even think about a pair of headphones :smiling_imp:

The innuos is a roon server and endpoint. Would need another machine to act as a server. Also I think sound might be nicer going first through my Dac and preamp than direct from the minidsp, but that should be tested… and I love as many nice ítems in my racks as possible :rofl::rofl:

You wouldn’t hear the nagging if you were wearing them :+1:
