Roon loses control of audio device

Just started expoling Roon - really nice UI, congrats. Unfortunately, I have a problem. Roon just stops playing in the middle of a track. It happens irregularly and I cannot really reproduce the issue, it happens after 5 minutes, 10, sometimes after half an hour. I can immediately press play, again and it continues where it stopped but its a bit annoying.

I have a wired network connection, no dropouts at the time when the track stops playing. Also, I have JRiver installed on the same machine and never experienced any audio or video dropouts.

1. Does it happen if you turn off Roon’s upsampling?
2. Does it happen with local file (not Tidal) playback at native resolution

Yes, it also happens with upsampling turned off and using my own music library. Just tested it, again this morning.
The Weiss INT201 (firewire to spdif converter) is already set to max buffer size and “safe mode” operation. But, again, this never happens with any other media player that I used before and the computer is used for watching movies, too.

Yes, there is a WASAPI setting and I am testing it in Exlusive Mode right now. If I dont chose exclusive mode the stream goes through the OS mixer which is not lossless.

What definitely does not work is upsampling of any kind using WASAPI exclusive mode. I get an error when trying to start playback:

Any experience from other Weiss users? Anyone else having the same issues with the ASIO driver?

Ok, the WASAPI driver is clearly more stable. After rebooting upsampling works, too. Every now and then, maybe every 15-30 minutes the music stops playing for a fraction of a second but continues thereafter. No more error messages as before.

I too have had similar issues with my Weiss DAC2. I used to use the WASAPI driver, but I started experiencing a problem where if the bitrate changed between tracks, the DAC would change but the playback was either at the wrong speed or it would skip. See here:

Not sure why this issue manifested itself recently, maybe to do with a fresh install of Windows; keen to get it fixed nonetheless! When I select a track of a different bitrate in Roon (i.e. Roon has to tell the DAC to change bitrate), the DAC changes OK and playback starts, but it is either too fast or skips & is too slow. Funny thing is, if I pause Roon and wait about 5 seconds and then hit play again, playback resumes properly. Latest version of Roon, Win 10, audio output is via firewire (We…

I switched to using the ASIO driver, but currently I am experiencing the same problem as the OP - half way through a track, the playback will stop and I get the error message “transport: roon lost control of the audio device”.

I tried to sort the WASAPI issue via PM with @Eric and @vova including by sending log files. The comment that I received was:

Based on their analysis of your logs it “sounds” like the DAC is telling Roon that it’s done switching sample rates before it’s really done, which causes it to pull audio at the “wrong” rate. This can cause audio to be dropped, or audio to play too fast depending on whether the audio buffer is draining too quickly and running out, or filling too quickly and overflowing. We’ve seen this sort of issue with a few other pieces of hardware in the past, and it’s almost always a problem with the driver.

A couple of things like trying the resync delay were tried, but no help. I also tried reinstalling Windows, Roon and the Weiss Firewire driver, but same problem. I tried using different software (HQplayer) and again same problem.

I just went back to try the WASAPI again after a few weeks, and same problem. I either get the message “An audio file is loading slowly. This may indicate a performance or hardware problem” with no playback, or the playback constantly skips. If it is the skipping problem, pausing the track for a few seconds and then restarting fixes the problem for that particular track.

A temporary workaround has been to enable DSP and to upsample everything to the DAC’s max sample rate, so that no sample rate switching has to occur on the DAC - but then I also get the “an audio file is loading slowly” problem, though a few tracks can play before this comes up.

OP (or anyone else), if you can suggest any things for me to try I would be most grateful. Really keen to get this problem sorted!

I have the exact same issue with my Weiss INT201 using the WASAPI driver. Its fully reproducable. Changing sample rates just doesnt work, I too have to press pause or restart Roon to get playback to work. And, I too can reproduce the same issue with Jriver. We should probably write a support ticket to Weiss, he is very responsive and can hopefully help.

On the other hand, the ASIO driver should be working in Roon and I hope that it can be fixed. I never had any issues with the ASIO driver in any other playback software do far.

As a temp workaround I see two options at the moment:

• Either upsample everything to max (in my case 192k) with the WASAPI driver or
• Use a different software with the ASIO driver

Yes these problems have been consistent and reproducible for me too. I did contact Daniel at Weiss about the WASAPI issue; all I got back was:

Difficult to tell what that could be. In any case I suggest to install the latest driver if you haven’t done so already.

It doesn’t seem to be an isolated problem with Roon either, as the same issue came up with HQP. The strange thing is that I did have it working a few months ago, and don’t know why it doesn’t work anymore. I suppose that points to a software/driver issue.

I did try upsampling to max with the WASAPI driver like you suggest, but I still get the “an audio file is loading slowly” problem.

Perhaps writing a joint letter to Daniel would be a good idea, so that he can see that this is not an isolated problem with a single user but possibly a problem related to the DAC itself. Let me know your thoughts. I take it that there aren’t any other Weiss users on this forum?

You are right, the problem with the WASAPI driver is not Roon specific, other players have the same issue. I also think this is a driver issue, maybe with something Windows changed recently. Who knows. I wrote an email to Daniel Weiss in German this morning, lets see.

The problem with the ASIO driver on the other hand seems to be a Roon problem. I hope the Roon team can have a look and fix the issue since this is apparently also reproducible and I am not the only one affected.

I have no idea whether there are other Weiss users in this forum. I just started testing Roon.

Hi @Johni ---- Thank you for the feedback and apologies for the wait here. Can you verify what connecting cable(s) your are using between the Weiss INT2020 and DCS Elgar Plus?

Hi Eric,

The Weiss INT2020 is not a DAC, its just a digital firewire interface.
Computer -> (firewire cable) -> Weiss INT202 -> (digital, dual XLR cable) -> DCS Elgar Plus -> (analog, XLR cable) power amplifier.
