Describe the issue

I cannot access my streamer via File Explorer using my new Windows 11 computer

Describe your network setup

Dell Inspiron Windows 11 Home Ed, Asus router RT-AX 68U, Netgear G8105 unmanaged switch, Salkstream III streamer (running ArchLinux, houses Roonserver and music files), everything connected by ethernet.

I tried the steps mentioned in this link (starting at step 8 for instructions for Windows 11 Home Edition), but it still doesn’t work.

Screenshot 2024-12-12 114137

My computer sees the dlna (media player?) on the Salkstream, but cannot access the internal HDD or attached USB HDD that house my music files and Roon database backup files.

Entering the streamer’s IP address just brings up the streamer’s local webpage access

I’ve moved this thread to the Audio Gear Talk category of the forum, since your question is not something that the Roon support team are equipped to answer.

Does the manufacturer of the Salkstream have a support forum or contact? You’re probably better off asking there.

@noris said to open a support thread.

I’ll also try reaching out to Salk. Unfortunately, Salk closed up shop, so I don’t know if the owner will still provide support.

OK I’ll move it back, but no guarantees that support will be able to help more than @Blackjack has…

PS I’ve removed your email address from the File Explorer screenshot

Thank you.

(Thanks for catching that email address…I didn’t notice it there)

For the moment, I’ve worked out a clumsy workaround to add music to my Salkstream.

I have an old, slow, basic laptop (from 2015?) that’s running Windows 10. It has no problem accessing the drives/files on the Salkstream. The new Windows 11 computer does see and allows me access to the old laptop.

So, I am able to rip a CD on the new Win 11 computer and perform any needed metadata edits, transfer the resulting file to the old laptop, then finally transfer the file from the old laptop to the Salkstream (phew!).

Obviously, this is less than ideal, and if the old laptop dies, I’ll have to come up with a completely different solution (ugh!)

Finger, toes, eyes crossed someone can help me get the new Win 11 computer to access the drives/files on the Salkstream! :crossed_fingers: :crossed_fingers: :crossed_fingers: :crossed_fingers:

The Salkstream probably needs the guest SMB registry change that Win 11’s recent update now requires for older hardware. One reason I am sticking with Win 10.

Here’s a link to another post you might want to look at

You might also try step 7 and see if SMB1 is enabled, instructions here

Thanks.

Unfortunately, neither worked. :frowning:

Have you tried an app like Syncback SE or Pro which uses it’s own network connection to sync your PC with the streamer.

It doesn’t answer the first part of your request, but it is a great solution that I use with all my pcs and NAs devices to keep me with lots of backup’s

Thanks. I haven’t tried that. I took a quick look at it looks like it’s for backups and syncing? I’m just wanting to be able to see the streamers drives/folders on the network from my new Win 11 PC.

So far none of the suggestions have worked. :persevere:

That’s why I said it didn’t fit the first part of your request.

In my world I never copy files directly to my servers, I always use a tool like Syncbak to keep my drives up to date with the changed versions of files that I have updated on my PC

I will read up some more on this issue as similar issues have come up before and the new Windows changes are causing a few issues

Thank you.

My guess (a complete guess) is that Windows doesn’t like something about the way the Salkstream drives/folder sharing is set up.

Ugh, I am so far out of my league. :sob:

Do you know how the file share is set up on the server? Does it support SMB3 etc

The problem is probably related to the Windows change, but good to know what the setup is on the server end

I have no clue.

It’s possible that the Salkstream, being an older product, requires SMBv1 and this is not enabled by default in Windows 11. Try this:

Thanks. I did try that but it still doesn’t work. :frowning:

Then I’m out of ideas, sorry…

Thank you for trying. I greatly appreciate all the posters here trying to help. :grinning::+1:

I believe I mentioned earlier I have an old (slow! I rarely use it other than to perform Windows updates occasionally) Win 10 laptop that is able to access the streamer drives/files. I checked the settings you linked and SMB1 is turned off, yet it has no problem accessing the streamer. I take this to mean not having SMB1 turned on is not the issue, so the mystery continues.:frowning:

Someone mentioned they believe the issue isn’t the streamer, but changes Microsoft made to Win 11 making it more difficult to connect to other network devices. :persevere:

PS - I don’t know if this means anything, but using the new Win 11 computer as a Roon remote and endpoint works fine.

PPS - In case it matters, I’ve kept the OS (ArchLinux) up to date on the Salkstream streamer.

Hi @Saturn94 ,

Other than trying the IP address directly \\192.168.50.95\ in Windows explorer (and perhaps any folder you have created such as music after it), there is not much else that I can suggest. Salkstreamer technical support would be in a much better position to assist in this regard.
