Roon Remote Greyed-Out Artwork and/or Hanging on Albums/Artist, Pages [Fix Released, Verifying]

have this issue with both android and ios.

very annoying

It’s pretty bad. My iPhone Roon app seems to be unable to establish a connection with the server if the screen times off or I leave Roon (switch apps to Safari for example) for a few minutes it loses the connection with the server and I have to quit the app and restart it. This happens every time. My Mac is much better at maintaining the connection.

For the last year I’ve never had these issues, this is a recent regression.

@connor @benjamin Can we have an update please.

I’ve seen some improvement, before after 24hrs I needed to restart roon rock to be able to connect from the remote but now I can connect but I need to quit the app and open it again if I left the app open previously on background running on my phone.

If I ‘freshly’ open the app no problem. If the app is running on background, the next morning I reopen it it’s not working needs to quit and reopen.

Remote app running on iPhone iOS 16.7.2

To the people at Roon - @support @benjamin @connor @danny @enno - I must honestly say that my patience has ended.
The Roon remote app on iOS, iPadOS (and Android as evidenced by other forum members) is broken since 2 months ago.
I am not entirely sure how this is not a priority, for had it been, we would have already seen a fix.
I perosnally see the Roon remote as the “face” of Roon, for it is the interface to controll the Roon Server.
It has become a major nuisance, there is not other app on iOS and iPadOS that I have to kill so often (sometimes by the minute) so that I can resume to use it.
I believe every paying customer has the right to use the Roon remote, and moreover, Roon has the legal obligation to supply a working software, and the obligation to address critical defects in a timley manner.
And when the Roon remote app is crashing in so many customers (as evidenced by posts in this forum) I honestly do not understand the passive attitude of Roon.
Yes, it was the holidays and everyone deserves a break. But also, during the holidays, I played a lot of music for my family and for party.
I must have had to kill the Roon remote more than a hundred times, and this was a major nuisance and NOT cool.
So Roon team, please get your act together, and fix this defect.
As it stands now, your Roon remote software is not working as intended, and is seriously ruining the Roon reputation (at least for me).
Also, I am very disapointed that I made such big efforts to point out this bug, only to be told that I am posting too many messages. I do not appreciate this - I made huge efforts to point your defect - screenshots, timestamps, logs… and only to face inactivity and passivness of the Roon team on this issue.

Hello everyone,

We’ve edited this post for clarity and wording on 2/1/24.

Our QA team has reproduced an issue where entering text into the Filter query field on the Albums/Artists page will cause gray placeholders to replace artwork. For some users, the Remote will hang in this state until restart. The ticket is proceeding through our internal pipeline.

For other users, we will separate your posts into dedicated threads to troubleshoot independently shortly.

We understand this is frustrating with highly symptomatic iOS Remotes and are proceeding with due urgency. However, as we’ve repeatedly asked certain users, please do refrain from posting Feedback in the Support category, especially if your intention is only to axe-grind or inflame the situation.

I have exactly the same problem …

So I backed up my Roon server (Windows 11). Uninstalled Roon and settings. Reinstalled. and set up the server/core from the backup.

  1. I noticed now that Roon Server gets its own exe and it seems to start up independently from the Roon GUI.
  2. My issues with Roon losing the connection to the server on app/screen timeout on my iOS devices are resolved.

I don’t know if the updates in December put my instance of Roon in a bad state, or if something else changed, but this simple uninstall reinstall has resolved the issues I was having with Roon Server on Windows 11.

Hi Connor, Can I ask what is happening here exactly as the majority of issues reported on this thread and one I made which covers the same issue have little to do with using filters. The app crashes regardless of filters being used it happens just leaving it untouched or using another app with Roon left on now playing.

Good question. Let’s clarify - here’s the status, @Simon_Arnold3:

Issue One (this thread):

There’s a reproducible issue in which users experience hanging with greyed-out artwork on Roon Remote on either the Albums or Artists page after entering text in the Filter query box. The first post in this thread typifies the symptoms of this Remote hang. @Stephen_Wareham is experiencing this also, based on screenshots above. We have an open ticket for this and can reproduce it intermittently - we will announce a fix as available on this thread.

Issue Two:

Failed connection between phone-based Roon Remotes and RoonServer after period of inactivity, not triggered by the Filter text box. We were tracking this here: iOS - glitches with ui and app stops working after inactivity (iPhone 13, iPad 12, others) [Investigating], but has since atomized across the Support section as we’ve released a new Roon version since then.

So, we have created a new tracking thread for issue two here, where we can more easily triage technical reports: Roon Remote iOS/Android Freeze with "Waiting for RoonServer" After Inactivity [Investigating]

We’ll be posting updates in both threads. Thank you for your patience.

Thanks for clarifying.

Hi everyone,

Development has escalated and we believe we’re close to having identified an underlying mechanism. Please stand by for an update - we’ll post here as soon as we have a course of action.

Same issue here got several months now. App just freezes and I have to go to setup - clear cache - restart constantly.

Same here on Pixel 7. No text in filters but everytime I open Roon remote it freezes, have to close and open again to use…

Full form submission

What’s happening?

Something else

How can we help?

I am experiencing freezes or crashes

If I come back to my Phone/roon app after some idle time away, it freezes up. I have to get out of the app and get back on for it to be working properly.

There are potentially two known issues that may be responsible for what you are experiencing, one involving the filter and the other not. See here:

Yes, the latest remote update does not solve this problem. And still there are various iPhone/iPad connection issues.

A post was split to a new topic: Pixel 7 Android Freeze Roon Remote

Roon doesn’t work with iOS. This has been happening since November 2023.

Hi Connor
Is there any progress with this issue?
