Thanks @AnimalOnDrums .
I’m going to stay optimistic and believe that Roon have created tickets for the genre issues we and other users are posting, it’s just that they aren’t consistant about formally marking report titles/commenting that they are in their own issue tracker.
I (and many others) think that Roon’s issue management system should be available to the public, but that’s for another time.
I thought it would be useful to have a list of the recent reports/requests concerning genre, so just to start.
Please could folks add those I have missed. Thank you.
In no particular order, just by category:
Core Machine (Operating system/System info/Roon build number)
NUC8i7BEH with Roon Rock 1.8 latest version
Network Details (Including networking gear model/manufacturer and if on WiFi/Ethernet)
Roon Rock Core and iMac remote connected via wired ethernet through a netgear switch
Audio Devices (Specify what device you’re using and its connection type - USB/HDMI/etc.)
Lumin U1 Mini streamer hardwired to the same switch
Description Of Issue
The main issue of having so many Genres with no pictu…
Every time something changes, like re-tagging some files to make a genre disappear, the whole Genres page changes. Genres that had images before no longer have images, new genres appear, images of many genres change. No matter what I do, the genres page gets messed up. Just now the image for the “pop rock” genre disappeared so it was just a blank square. I clicked on it and it took me to the “Pop Rock” genre page and under “Your Artists” it only shows one artist even though the listed albums…
Moved from another topic - creating a new topic for visibility:
That is partly true, but it will also use the second most tagged artist if the first has already been used in another genre, and so on… I think based on the alphabetical order of (top-level?) genres. But even this doesn’t seem to be a consistant behaviour - so possibly something else is at play.
Also, the photos on a specific genre page can differ to those shown elsewhere:
Hard Rock (which is a sub-genre of the Rock Roon genre m…
The 1.8 release notes say;
“ Genre Pages
Genre pages were previously limited to the music present in your library, but in Roon 1.8 you can explore music that’s new to you. Genres that were previously unavailable or only featured a handful of content from your library now feature a number of recommendations powered by Valence, including recommended artists and albums, subgenres, Live Radio stations, and for classical music top composers and compositions.“
I take this to mean when I select a G…
I can not select sub categorys. Like different styles of blues. There is 15 categorys of blues and only 5 or 6 are selectable. For the rest if I press the play button nothing happens. Is there a reason for this behavior?
I previously posted this issue but it did not show up.
I noticed that in my genres there is many empty genres, so if i click genre all I got is empty page.
Also there is strange genres like “Nick Cave”, I dont find that genre in any of my files.
Is there a way to remove those empty genres?
Or is possible to add “Null” (invisible) genre to Roon, so It would be possible to map some of unwanted genres to “NULL” and hide them.

Roon creates genres that don’t exist in my database. if I select one I find radio station. is there any way to disable the radios? Or diasable genres?
My music is all on my nas
I should probably this here just to be clear. I would like to be able to go the the main “Genres” page and easily remove the Genres I do not want to see and have no interest in. It would be even better if other genres could be added as replacements. I want to go to the Genres page and get rid of the Religious, Children’s, Comedy, Easy Listening, Stage & Screen, Vocal, and HOLIDAY Genres with one or two clicks.
Thanks!
I miss the old ‘album walls’ for genres from 1.7:

The artists’ photos look reasonable on the top-level genre screen, but I would like to be able to change the artwork that is displayed just on this main genre page.
Navigation decisions are also just as likely to be based upon the Genre text…

However, once we have landed on a genre page, we already know where we are, so any image is more decorative than functional, and doesn’t need to keep the link between image and text as fou…
So perhaps against my better judgement, I’ve decided to start to remove the Pop/Rock genre entirely from my library, as the first stage in a project to improve genre info in my library…
Among the many issues with genre handling, I’ve noticed (along with other users) that the album count for top-level genres used on the Genre screen differs from the count from the Focus function.
tldr: The album count for top-level genres on the Genre screen doesn’t include albums from its sub-genres.
For exam…
Please could we have a tab for SUBGENRE on the specific genre pages, similar to the tabs on an Artist page - Overview, Discography, Composition.
I, and I’m sure many others, regularly like to drill down into subgenres, and scrolling to the bottom of a long genre page full of recommendations etc… to see the subgenres isn’t a particularly great UX.
Thank you.
I didn’t change the font/capitalization of the text ‘subgenre’ on the tab in this mockup of the Classical genre, but you get the idea:

It might even be useful to @support as well.
Note the discussion in the topics above aren’t necessarily limited to the topic title, but are connected to genre in some way.
