Hey Everyone,
This is a major release for us, and an important step forward for Roon. We’ve migrated the platform underneath the app to a newer foundation, which improves performance today and gives us a much stronger base for the work ahead. In practical terms, that means better efficiency, reduced memory usage, and a platform that gives us more room to keep improving Roon in the releases to come.
You should feel that work in everyday use. RoonServer now uses memory more efficiently and returns more of it when it’s no longer needed, which is especially meaningful for larger libraries and systems with modest RAM. Browsing and sorting should also feel more responsive, with less overhead behind the scenes and more time spent doing the work you actually asked Roon to do. We’ll also be sharing a separate technical post for those of you who want a deeper look at the performance changes and the work behind them.
We’re also continuing to bring Roon and ARC closer together. In this release, Focus comes to ARC, bringing one of Roon’s most powerful library tools to mobile across Albums, Artists, Tracks, Composers, and Compositions. If you already know Focus in Roon, it will feel immediately familiar in ARC - the same flexible filtering, the same inversion behavior, and the same ability to quickly narrow in on exactly what you want. You can learn more in this post.
Alongside these larger changes, we’ve continued acting on your feedback with a long list of fixes and refinements across both Roon and ARC. This release adds Random sort to the Albums browser in both apps, giving you a new way to rediscover albums in your library when you want something less predictable than the usual browsing paths. We’ve also improved the visual design of tooltips in Roon on desktop, and added keyboard shortcut hints to tooltips where those shortcuts are available. Together with a range of long-standing fixes and smaller usability improvements, these changes help make Roon and ARC feel better in everyday use.
One important note: this release requires macOS 12 or later on Mac, and on Linux requires glibc 2.27 or later plus OpenSSL 1.1.1 or later. If you missed our earlier announcement and want to check whether your system is affected, more details are available in this post.
For Mac users who are not yet able to update to macOS 12 or later, we’re also making a pre-update installer available as a temporary option. This version will not receive future updates or security fixes, and may become incompatible with current Roon Remote or ARC versions over time. You can find the installer here.
Thank you for your continued support.
